Thanx for posting this...My teacher, mentor, and good friend Ed Shaughnessy on drums....Not enough videos featuring Ed,except for Tonight Show stuff...Great!!!
What a fine group of All Stars really swinging on this classic standard jazz tune. I hope some of the younger up and coming musicians will keep this music alive and well.
I have been a life long fan of Doc Severinsen's devotion to his instrument. His solo on this track is evidence of that devotion. Well considered notes, played with power and accuracy and one of the greatest trumpet tones and techniques of all time.
Way back in the very early fifties I was known as what is now called "A nerd". Why? Because I did`nt like that old "popcorn music". Songs like Put Another Nickel In and that kind of stuff, I was into the big band sounds, then I discovered the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, and to me THAT was a real music lesson. Eventually some of those who called me a nerd, came round to discover what GOOD music was. So it goes to prove that all is well that ends well.
Innovator and one of the most original West Coast jazz musicians of all those wonderful musicians of that rich era ... plus Chet Baker and the whole group of the 50s West Coast (Pacific Records) musicians.
I read Mulligan's biography recently. He played clarinet also. I don't know of any recordings of him playing it solo. However, there are probably band recordings of him playing it in the section.
The “Big Number” featuring every tub, all flags flying, seems more like it. Others have noticed the particularly non-swinging feel and rushed tempo, rightly. Fitting conclusion for a summer pops concert and picnic. Severinson featured with my concert and stage unit way back in 60’s. Novelty numbers, mostly set-pieces. Mulligan was the man of the hour then, and as a bari player myself, doted upon his recordings. Many of which were good, but hardly stellar. He sounds real good tonight, though. Unsurprising, considering that these numbers are in every book, and solos practically rote by now. Sound man is tripping.
@@schwei56 I bought the Tyzik album, sometime back in the early 80s. Since I only owned about 10 albums at that time, I listened to it over and over again! The audio file on the ejazzlines site (I've bought charts from them in the past) is from the Tyzik album. Here is the UA-cam cut: ua-cam.com/video/m2AkAFwijf8/v-deo.html Later on, Doc recorded it with the Tonight Show Band (I have that album too). I love Doc, but I like Tyzik's recording more than Doc's recording, probably because I heard it first :-)
don't get me or anyone with even an inexpensive music system starteda bout the massively intrusive and unlistenable 60 cycle hum . . FAIL for engineers and QA
I respect what they were doing but half the video is introductions. A good 2 minutes of that would have sufficed. And it's a little too fast. It doesn't pick up on the slower world war 2 feeling more like jazzy 80s. But I shouldn't critique I can't play a note.
Wow. Gerry Mulligan playing Glenn Miller. Never thought I'd live to see the day!

Eddie Daniels is one of the world:s best musician!
you are right Bruce, I was fortunate to have the privilege of playing with him while I was in college. He also plays a mean tenor sax.

All these great musicians together. Incredible.
The best from the best! ❤
What makes these guys great? Individual talent and an ear for the group! Plus they hit it out of the park everytime!

People that's Jazz!
I'm glad they didn't try to imitate Glenn Miller. The solos are great.
I've been tracking clarinetists on youtube and though I've heard him before I've fallen in love with Gerry Mulligan's playing. Thanks again.
That is Eddie Daniels on clarinet. Gerry plays bari sax.
Eddie Daniels is the clarinet player

Oh it’s over? Couldn’t tell cuz fuckin cymbal is still ringing in my head

That high note Doc hits at the end is erotic.
The music starts at 3:20 into the video.

Ray Brown was a long-time member of the Oscar Peterson Trio and was married to Ella Fitzgerald.
He also played in Merv Griffin's band with Jack Sheldon. I used to rush home from school every day to catch that band on TV.
Wonderful !!!
It was extremely hot that day
Gerry number one.
Большего просвещения Вячеслав благодарствую!¡!!!!!!!!

Mr. Shaughnessy has a nice
white Drum kit.
gerry Mulligan
Thanks for uploading this. I wonder if it can be restored?
That’s what I’m talkin bout java player of all tim
Brought to you by BETA or VHS!!
Android Man I would say VHS. Betamax was always much better quality and this is clearly struggling, interesting though it is.
It's good, but there's not as much swing in the modern rendition as the original.
I was just listening to Glenn miller’s original version yesterday and you are correct sir.
really did not need that three minutes of intro
Well. The rest of us did.
Why do they always speed it up....they need to slow it down to get the ol' timey effect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Play it Gerry.mulligan.
Not my tempo
It's good, but it ain't Glenn.
For Glenn, check out my The Immortal Miller Sound ~ The Sound That Made A Nation Swoon FB page. It is loaded with that great Glenn Miller sound.
Not enough trombones.......
But it was Super.
Kris Kristofferson plays bari?
Gerry Mulligan
lol
Jeff Tysek's
In The New Mood
Tyzik?
Joe Garland?
It’s definitely Tyzik’s arrangement (of Joe Garland’s tune).
I was just being a wise guy correcting Grant’s spelling.

I think Niels Henning Orsted Pederson might have had the edge on Ray ??? And,is that Mel Lewis on drums ?
Ed Shaughnessy on drums.
Ed Shaughnessy from the Johnny Carson tonight Show
Oh NO! But he was piano icon Oscar Peterson's favorite bassist.
Ed Shaugnessy on drums.
@@2dasimmons Ed"Mutton Chops" Shaugnessy. A great big band drummer who had the guts to go go head to head with Buddy on Carson. One of the best.
It lacks the smooth quality of the original

Actually, I was a bit disappointed after that build-up. It was certainly okay, but oversold, I think.
Over produced, too many instruments!
Clarinet was poor pitch.
Nonsense. It was fine.
Eddie Danièle better To stop play Jazz.
He can not play his Buffet...
I heard him in Italy. He seemed an arrogant man and a mediocre musician.I did not like him.
I’m not impressed.
Самое быстрое исполнение, и не очень впечетляющее.
