- Very nice chart played expertly by the band. Doc's solo starts low/mid range with his usual big sound. In one spot (around 4:45) he uses alternate fingerings to color the same note. Rock-solid solo. The arrangement is by Dick Lieb. Other soloists include:
Ross Tompkins, piano
Eugene "Snooky" Young, trumpet
Bruce Paulson, trombone

They should have featured the band every night ..
I love that Johnny put Freddy DiCordiva in his place. Johnny knew the value of this band and he wasn't going to let Freddy frack it up.
I love the pure honesty from Johnny in the intro. "We plug every bimbo who comes on the show."
Great line!!
He could be difficult but I can see his point and I admire his honesty and ability to be forthright and speak the truth.
Figuratively AND literally!! :)
Oh man! I sure miss those days when the Tonight Show had a great band! Thanks Dave.
And a great host.
None of the Tonight Shows after Johnny have been worth a damn - not funny, & musically vapid. For 30 years late-night television had something we'll never, ever see again!
Carson is absolutely hilarious before they play!
Fantastic, we'll never see the likes of that on network TV again I'm afraid.
I know! I started listening to the Tonight Show band in the mid 1960's. When I was in college, away from a TV (i.e. the olden days), I found out I could pick up the audio at the bottom of my FM radio band because it was on channel 6 in that area. So I listed as much as I could. That made for 30 years of wonderful big band (and solo trumpet) playing available FOR FREE!
@@dwerden I met Doc in the early 1980s when I was a trumpet student at the University of Tennessee. What a great guy!
Johnny going rogue…love it!
Hey, I bought that album all those many years ago, it's great!
This is why Broadcast Late Night Television was BIG. It was singular and appealed to the broadest audience.
I loved falling asleep to Carson way back in the day. After the monologue I'd start to doze off feeling all was right with the world. Doc was an insane talent and perfect leader for the band.
Wow - so damn tight! What a band... killer.
Back in the day when there was no good, better, or best. They were all great!
Band is tight as always!
Great music.
From when the Tonight Show was worth watching.
🎶Amazingly, Doc's still alive and only stopped doing public performances last year!!😲🎶
Old musicians never die. They just go from bar to bar. 😄
Johnny's warm relationship, and admiration for Doc was touching. And, btw, that Tonight Show Jazz Orchestra, was absolutely devastating. Absolute heavy hitters, top to bottom. I always wished though, that Doc would have played in the staff more. He had absurd range, but it seemed like that's pretty much all he did sometimes, and there was a lot more to his skill than that.
Ah yes, back when late night TV was fun to watch! I always love Doc and the Band! 🎺🎵🎶👍
The sax soli is Illinois Jaquet's solo from the Lionel Hampton recording played in unison with the baritone an octave lower.
Unbelievable orchestra. Incredible!!
I saw Doc and Snooky in Atlantic City at Resorts International many years ago. Outstanding!!
If that doesn't git you up and put you in the practice room nothing will thanks doc and thank you snoky
What an amazing band that was.
Damn Doc, make it scream! What a band!
LOL thats right Hold that #$$%@$ up... what GREAT MUSIC!!! Bruce Paulson was my music instructor at Roosevelt high in mpls minn... he left and suddenly he was on The Tonight Show... Blew me away but he is the best.. God i miss this kind of music and entertainment
on television.... The Tonight Show ended when Carson retired... my opinion...
Damn Snooky can play. LOL they all can. And Doc nearly pasted the dbl Bb - Eb like at the end of Song for You. It was a great D. (edit pretty darn an Eb really.. it'll do fine!)
I am going to get that album!
This is pure gold.
Thanks, David! I still listen the their two albums regularly. Everyone always thought it was a shame the band wasn’t featured more. I often wondered if Johnny and the producers really knew what they had. What a rare and special thing it was to have a band like that made up of the best guys in town. Something like that will likely never happen again.
Johnny loved big band jazz and he appreciated this band. At one time, the bean counters at NBC wanted to cut some members from the band to save money. Johnny said no way, if you do that, I quit. So, the musician's jobs were saved.
As the 1980's ended and the 1990's entered, Music tastes had dramatically changed. This is why Jay Leno's version of the show featured groups during the last segment rather than in the middle of the show because people would tune out if they did not like the music.
Late night shows need to get back to the big band format! Bands today are ok but nothing like the sound of a big band!!
There's no current late night host worthy of a trio let alone a big band.
I own this album ON VINYL, AND the 2nd album that they cut! Unbelievable musicians and arrangements!
If you can find the third album, it's just as good. I have all three on CD, and 1 & 2 on vinyl.
There’s officially 4 Tonight Show Band albums: The first one, Vol. 2, Once More With Feeling, & the Christmas album. Unofficially, there Swingin’ The Blues, credited to Doc Severinsen & His Big Band. It’s basically most of the T.S. Band musicians reuniting, after the Johnny Carson era ended.
Great memories! Thanks for sharing. Sure miss that band
I sure miss Johnny and Ed and Doc and that amazing Tonight Show Band. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
3:15, Even Snooky has a Double-C in him.
Snooky played lead in the Basie band and in the Thad Jones Band…he was a phenomenal player!
Oh man this is GREAT!!!! Miss Doc and the band
Simply the best!
The absolute best!
My favorite on their album!!! I always wondered if they played it live...WELL here it is...I may wear this one out...THANKS DAVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!
❤❤❤absolutely 💯
Holy moly, those guys were on fire!
DeCordova was such a stiff. Johnny should have walked over there and put his shoe up you-know-where when he started telling him to back off on plugging the album. Ridiculous.
Johnny eventually "sort of fired" him. What triggered it was immediately after one of Johnny's sons, Rick, was killed in a car crash in 1991, Johnny wanted to end the show with a short tribute to his boy. The lad was a photographer, so Johnny was holding up some of the kid's work. Since it was towards the end of the show, Johnny's tribute was running a little long. Freddie then signaled Johnny to "wrap it up" to meet the NBC closing hour. Johnny gave Freddie the snake eye and continued on. It was after that that Johnny kept Freddie on the payroll, but he was exiled to stand well off of the stage and was never again allowed to say a word to Johnny.
I have a CD of the Tonight Show band from the 1980s. I think this number was on it.
David, one of my favorite lullabies.
I met Johnny Carson back in 1966 or so-I also met someone who played Trumpet in the band-with long blonde hair-and had been prior with Chicago--or Chicago Transit Authority--he reminds me of the Brunson Brothers-i can't recall his name but he was great on the trumpet and a very nice guy-just like the current Brunson Brothers-anyone recognize this person-could it have been the father of the Brunson Brothers-currently in the news???
In 66 Chicago (the band) didn't exist yet. Their first album (Transit Authority) was late in 68.
Everybody Loves Doc!
5:36 The build up to the crescendo. EPIC!
BRAVISSIMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doc not only played multiple double high Cs, but on the end of one of them, he ghosted double high E natural. -Soft, but there and quite accurate.
Arrangement By The Great Dick Lieb!
Funny introduction and an amazing performance!!
Wow!
As good as it gets.
"Yeah yeah that's it hold that sucker up."
Mercy booking😂😂😂
That was when they were on the Gong Show
I just bought that album on iTunes for $11.99. Quite the bargain.
Reminds me of, "Cotton Tail".
WOW!!!
Who will replace this music
Great performance. But did Doc not quite reach the high notes a couple of times?
I realize that is so hard.
That's the beauty of live performances, you get to see that your heroes are human too. No auto tune or multiple takes. You get what you got.
Maybe add a link to purchase
Not too bad for a "house" band :)
Jimmy who???
2:19
Doc was really struggling to lip that Double 'D' up
and he got there just before releasing. I think that the previoius jumping up to something like a double high E for a monent was just too much to go right back super high after.
"Sometimes the trumpet wins." -Dizzy Gillespie
🎺🤓👍🏼
Thank you for posting this! You have no idea how I needed this! Thank you.❤ So glad Johnny put Fred in his place. Those guys were paid peanuts for their expertise.
Carson one of the few who showcase jazz on his show. He had Dizzy Gillespie on one evening to lead the band with a tune, it was unbelievable.

To set the record straight (no pun intended), Johnny is showing the 1986 lp "The Tonight Show Band with Doc Derverinsen," Amherst Records AMH 3311. "Flying Home" is found on Side B, track 3.
You're telling me not to plug the album, huh? Sure I'll get right on that..
I wish they had showed whoever was playing Bass. He didn't miss a beat!
The bassist must forgotten to give the camera crew their present the previous holiday!
I was thinking that exact same thing!
