i feel so sorry for hop pop because not only did he lose his son/daughter and son-in-law/daughter-in law (i don't thimk the made it clear which one) he had to now raise his grankids i don't think thats wrong but thats not what supposed to happen in life but life takes unexpected turns unfortunately and he's a single grandparent on top of that he's done a good job but poor guy

A Grandfather should NEVER have to raise his own grandchildren alone, especially for someone Hop Pop’s age, he must’ve been terrified he wouldn’t live long enough to see Sprig and Polly grow up. Death, could happen at any moment, and stress only hastens the chances of it occuring (which Hop Pop has had plenty of) it would be TERRIFYING to be an old grandfather who outlived his own son and daughter-in-law and now has no choice but to raise his grandchildren. I Truly feared for Hopidiah in this scene. His worries are so realistic is makes me want to give him a big hug and let him know that he doesn’t have to do everything alone. It's not hop-pop fault he didn't let his family die everybody knows they always protect the family and your kins from threats i feel sorry about hip-hop and sprig and Polly their mom and dad they got killed by herons the heroens they are the responsible sprig and polly their parents death hop pop he saved Polly and sprig everyone has hiding a dark story they really don't want talking about it's can broken your heart.
I didn't like this cuz this didn't explain why the calamity box was dangerous he doesn't explain why it was dangerous also it's a case of dead parents or relatives cliche

It makes even more scary when you realize that Hop Pop probably saw the parents get eaten. It probably would give him PSTD.

My Guess Is That The Reason Hop Pop Is So Strict With Sprig Is Because He Reminds Him Of His Son/Daughter.

It's not his fault he didn't know that the herons would attack wart wood
If hop pop had been there to fight them he would be dead and Sprig and Polly would be orphans.
