  • My first ever tutorial on how I made a rope chain
Not for sale just showing how its made
Special thanks for the music from:
    RuBiXKuBiX- Nice Things
    THBD- Good for you
    Joakim Karud-great days
    Chris Morrow 4-Crying over you
wants to try different sizes. you can get a good idea of if the links you want to use are the right size by dividing the thickness of the wire by the thickness of the rod the wire was wrapped on. you want it to be around 2.5
. the first chain in this video is a 5mm rod and 2mm wire which is 5/2=2.5
. the second chain is 7.5mm rod and 3mm wire which is 7.5/3=2.5
.the chain from the first video is a1.2mm wire on a 3.2mm rod which is 3.2/1.2=2.6

I use a clean thick welders glove on my hands when drawing long wire that is too long for the shop. Wrap it around until you have a "grip". It doesn't hurt too much. No marks whatsoever and no pausing marks. Oil of Wintergreen is great in drawplates - good for burnishing also. Thanks for sharing!

thats a great looking chain there has to be a way to make it with out soldering it at ever link I like it a lot the soldering thing I don't know much I use copper wire and finding a solder to blend in is not an easy task to this day I have not
will you know of any brands I may look for or anything I may try worse yet were I may find what ever you recommend
    thank you in advance

I have a video showing how to put together a rope chain with no solder but this is not practical at all the wire I use in that video was very soft but it shows how to do it copper may work because it’s harder. As for soldering copper I use silver solder yes not the same colour but it can be plated after all so you can try brass which is yellow and the silver solder does not look so bad on it hope this helps

Soooo. Does the jeweler hire metal smiths (is that the correct term) to make these chains. How long does it take.

So this a new interest of mine.
In the beginning you said to put it through the wiring mill slowly or the metal will crack...
No matter how slow I go through this process the silver flakes and could you elaborate this process for me?
It makes it hard to go through the draw plate...

Justin Gill yes try when melting the silver make sure you heat it very well making sure every thing is clean and when milking slow and heart the silver after 3-4 mills and close the mills slowly don’t rush if this don’t work your silver is not clean and could be contaminated

MadeByHuss what advice would you give for soldering?? I’m having some trouble getting it to flow where I want... or just to flow at all. I clean it with sand paper. I’m using hard flux. I’ve gotten it to work a few times. But it’s very inconsistent

Justin Gill to clean it best you have to heat it and put in acid then heat it and then put flux it will dry where you want it to flow and use easy solder good luck

MadeByHuss what kind of acid? Sulfuric acid?? So, use easy solder and dip the Jump rings in acid before soldering... worth a shot?... It’s been a few days since I’ve gone for it.

Hey, are these still produced mostly by hand? Or do they have a machine that does it now?

Could you do this with much smaller diameter wire and smaller links? To make a finer chain or does that weaken it?

Hudson Tolleson if have the patience yes check out the disruption or may in my other rope chain video to work out size of links and best of luck thanks for commenting

Thank you. I used this to repair a broken necklace minus soldering. Only broke one link and lost one on the floor.
