Ah, the 90s. I was 24 in '95 and the Lips were my favorite band at the time. Seeing a young Wayne, a young John Stewart, and a young Jeanine Garafalo is really really weird.
i remember seeing the whole version with the noisy breakdown from a friends vhs tape so I think they did a whole version, just wish it was up on youtube
“Jelly” is the song that I saw played endlessly on MTV that turned me into a flaming lips fan… I even learned how to play it , although I had a tough time singing it, even in a drop tuning… Man, Jon and Wayne look so young here! Great to see Ronald Jones… Steven’s damn good on guitar also (on drums here), however no match for Ronald - the best guitarist the Lips ever had, in my opinion!
You are absolutely correct on everything, no one ever comes close to Ronald on the guitar, he was an absolute legend and an unstoppable force. Steven was however an unstoppable songwriter and musician and he changed psychedelic rock forever!!!
Lyrics are hilarious, but he sounds like he's trying not to laugh, as if he just cannot believe that this is the song he has to perform on cable tv. Had to be one of those total screw around throw away tunes that they never thought would amount to anything.
@@joejones9520yes I’ve been thinking a lot today about the harmonic complexity that happens between the bass guitar, the rhythm chords, and the lead guitar notes. A very rich experience. I keep playing it over and over and over again incessantly the last few days, just as I did when I got the cassingle when it was brand new.
Jon Stewart had some legendary bands on his show, and I have a feeling it wasn't by chance. I suspect he was like, no, I am not going to have Peter Cetera on, I am going to have Diamanda Galas and John Paul Jones. 💩
Yeah, I believe he curated quite a bit. Remember he was bartender at City Gardens in NJ for several years, so a lot of these bands came through back in the day!
More likely the music director picked all the 'cool' college acts, because they are all radical liberals like Stewart. Sadly that is probably exactly how guest were picked. No different than his show on Comedy Central. He literally made jokes about that being how the guest were picked, but it was not really jokes, just truth. What is the old saying in comedy and music, you always know their political leanings based on if they play colleges, because colleges only want liberals and only liberals want to play colleges. That is why a lot of comedians refuse to play colleges. Seinfeld has talked about it several times. He says he decided decades ago colleges are the one place he refuses to do his act. Guess who does a lot of colleges, Stewart. Stewart is a political hack, and it really is unfortunate, because he should know better. He appears to be more intelligent than that.
I was never a fan of this era of "The Lips". Mr.Coyne singing like a "dumb okie" about nonsense. It feels like a cash grab. Like when Dinosaur Jr. went to a major label and J. Mascis became a parody of himself. Wayne Coyne, does this parody of an "Okie" with a pitchy voice. Long gone are the days of "There You Are"....an actual ballad for for the weird in Oklahoma, An anthem for the folks who feel isolated in a weird American state. I wish "grunge" never happened. I wish the record companies had stuck with teen groups. if that meant that, the bands I loved from the late 80/early 90's only had ONE more record, left in them....well...they'd be earnest.
The riff is so good the lyrics dont even matter. 😅 Such a good song.
Best thing Oklahoma ever gave the world
One of them should run for president

oh its painful to see an insanely rockin’ mountainside just faded out quickly ouch

Yeah, what bummage…
I love Ronald.
Mountainside!!! My college band used to cover this. Still have tinnitus
Its almost a ritual. especially on good drugs
Steven D is my favorite musician of all time He is on another plane
The bassist looks like a mix between Layne Staley and Robby Krieger.
He really does 😂

This will forever be the only song that I’ll quietly sing every word to :) love the 90s music but wow he looks just like Gavin Rossdale.
Does he? Or does Gavin look just like Wayne? After all, Wayne was around first and has outlasted him!

no, it's a complex song to play on guitar, especially to incorporate the multiple guitar parts, lots of time and thought went into that song.

Interesting xoxo
It's all about the drummer!
Drozd is one hell of a drummer his beat on flight test is killer
Drodz is the best musician ever He basically wrote all of Soft Bulletin and played most of it as well He;s a monster
Love the Lips era of Steven on drums!

Old Dirty Bastard on Jon Stewart was legendary

Looks like Micheal’s got a “hip shot” on his bass…
This must be college music. And I hate fields.
Landry's band did a really bad cover of this.
