After 4.5 years of not being annually flushed (previous owners didn't do it) I had quite a bit of gunk and the vinegar turned slightly orange. Super easy to do this procedure. Thank you for posting this. Saved me quite a bit of money.

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

Thanks for these tech tip videos. Super helpful for us DIY’ers.
Did this for the first time on my 8 year unit which came with my home. Vinegar solution was greenish blue for the first 30 minute cycle, and stayed mostly clear on the 2nd flush cycle.
My hot water valve was pretty tough to twist, and I had little leverage to get to it. I ended up taking a long screw driver and hammer to get it moving.

Useful hint in case your pump seems not to be moving any vinegar:-
At 0.59 seconds, when removing the drain caps, each cap has a solid washer that should stay with the cap. The first year I followed these instructions the washers did just that and the descaling went very smoothly.
The following year the cold cap's washer did not stay with the cap but stuck to the male thread, blocking the flow from the pump. It stayed stuck there when I disconnected the hose to see if the pump was working. The pump was working fine and I did not notice the washer stuck to the male thread.
After wasting an hour with all sorts of tests, I was about to buy a more powerful pump but on the last hose disconnection the washer jumped to the female hose connector and was pushed out on the next pump test. Duh!
The washer is now back in its drain cap and the vinegar is flowing freely.

Following all your instructions and everything was going good but the timer got to C58 and it wouldn’t go down anymore after a few minutes of waiting. So I unplugged the pump and took out the filter below the water heater and cleaned it out(it was very dirty) and put it back in then plugged back in the pump and the timer started going down. Im pretty sure the filter was causing this issue because now it’s doing exactly what your video says. Thank you for this video.

The previous owner of the house never flushed the unit for 6.5 years. So i went to flush it and it caused leaking in the unit. I had to replace the whole thing. I opened up the broken unit and found out it was all rusted inside and parts just broke when I went to flush it. My 2 cents would be if the unit was never flushed in years it is probably wise to let it be until it breaks and start afresh with a new tank. Also I used a 1/4 hp pump to flush it which has water flow rate of 2000 gph. Correct me if I am wrong because I dont know much about water flow rate and how it affects the heater. I know on an average house the water flow rate through the piping is about 360 gph. I dont know if the higher gph of the pump has anything to do with breaking it. Anyway i use aquarium tank pump now that has a gph of about 300 to 600 which I can control. No isuues in last 5 years so far.

Why Noritz installation manual recommends CLR? Because annual vinegar job is a guess work. Noritz unit has a descale maintenance sensor, so you do the maintenance only when the error code appears. No more guessing. Also, when using diluted CLR be sure the submersible pump is corrosion resistant.

Yes, we do recommend to shut off the supply water going into the heater before draining the condensate and the remaining water in the heater when attaching the water drain hose. If the water supply to the heater is not shut off it will result in water flowing in and out of the heater as you open the drain valves.

The family’s health trumps my need to CRUSH the calcium build up very quickly. Good luck!

Had that same issue. Home Depot (and probably most hardware stores of size) sells the isolation valves together in kits if you need immediately. Otherwise you can find on eBay, etc online sites. I didn't get a Nortiz kt per se, and got a 'generic one, which works the same way. The kit I got was 110.00 at HD cause I needed it right away.
I'm pretty sure you can do without it... but a total pain... and its worth the money to get the kit, as you should do this yearly. IF you don't get the valves, I'd imagine if you turned off water, connected the hoses directly to the 3/4 fitting coming directly out of the heater at the bottom and ran it that way, you could do the same thing...
