Putin's fear of incoming spate of assassinations spurs escalation worries | Mark Galeotti

- "There is this fear that if this campaign continues, and especially if it escalates, that at some point the Russians will just assume it's Washington and London who are telling the Ukrainians to come and kill and blow up and send drones and on Russian soil, and this may trigger a response from the Russians."
Russia and the US fear that an expected spate of assassinations over winter could escalate the war in Ukraine, Mark Galeotti tells #timesradio

I do not understand why the UK and US demand gratitude from the Ukrainians. They demanded Ukraine give up their nuclear weapons and pledged to protect Ukraine in return. They should stick to their pledge in the Budapest Memorandum.
gloves off, no action held back, fight for survival and everything is on the table... including Putin, top brass and collaborators
Ukraine are not ungrateful, it may at times seem it, they are under so much pressure, it is sheer frustration, they are fighting for survival, always keep that in mind.
Exactly, the pussyfooting around providing the best possible military assistance appears to be born out of fear for Russia losing and falling apart (that however is now inevitable) and the Ukrainians are paying in blood.

If anything the west should be listening to Ukraine more and not the other way round. If it wasn't for western timidity perhaps this war would be over by now
The Nato never let Putin win.
the West doesn't owe Ukraine a country on our dime
What makes you think the West wants the war over quickly?
I agree
No perhaps about it we in the west have held ukraine back .
Far from Ukraine having to be ever-so-thankful to its Western allies, the Western allies should be eternally grateful to Ukraine. They are fighting the West's war for it, and paying a heavy price in lives lost.
And you blame Russia, Russia not wanting Nuclear weapons on its boarder, that Russia.
Ukraine is fighting its own war for its own survival, if Ukraine fell, it's much more likely that Russia would turn East rather than West afterwards
Russia will turn where ever America want to place nuclear weapons on Russia's border, common sense remember Cuba and the missiles not so nice when its hypocritical America.@@donkdump8807
Every day, I hear Ukrainians say how they are so grateful for the help they are receiving from the West. Also, the support we provide is not taxpayers money being shipped overseas to another country. It is going to local jobs to replenish and upgrade our own military while we donate outdated equipment and ammunition. A strong Ukraine is needed for future peace and stability.
$4 billion towards an expansion at an ammunition plant in my community - Iowa
Which will mostly operated by robots and money shipped to tax havens.

Wrong. Check your numbers. We are eating inflation thanks to our massive payments. Not tax money? You don’t understand how our money system works. They print, spend, and tax to remove dollars and suppress inflation. Only it’s not enough to keep up with printing.
This is going to end.
Pay now, pay later?!
The truck bombing of the Crimean bridge? Is he serious? That bombing, while undeniably spectacular and headline grabbing, also served to disrupt Russia's ability to supply their military forces in Crimea and Kherson. A 100% legitimate, and arguably critical, military target for Ukraine.
100 per cent
Wait till their oil production gets targeted !
You're a bit off with your percentages.
It's most definitely not "100% legitimate military target". It's more like 50% military target, also know as dual-use/dual-purpose. And strictly speaking it's not nice to target those, but it's been accepted practice to target those cause they are, as you correctly point out critical targets. Same as powerplants and other such bits of infrastructure, btw.
And the legitimacy of using unmarked civilian assets to blow up the bridge is also a bit questionable. Violates a few rules on how war is to be conducted...
...it's why saboteurs tend to enjoy fewer rights than regular soldiers.
If it was indeed 100% legitimate, then they wouldn't be using deniable assets to do it, and Ukraine would officially acknowledge those actions.
@@Slavic_Goblin Wrong!
@@Slavic_Goblin You must be a comedian......The only one that has held back ( with incredible and unnecessary restraint ) in either of the two major conflicts people are watching is Ukraine.....If they ever unleash their drone / intelligence capability on Russia's oil and gas industry Putin will be gone in a week !

When Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons to russia, the UK and the US agreed to help if they ever needed it. Being "snarky" is minor compared to the broken promises which are causing the kidnapping and terrorism of Ukrainians, let alone the russian threat of again targeting, during the winter, the power supply to Ukraine. I'd like to see you go without heat for a week.
Не дай бог, как бомба на хиросим
The weapons were Russian weapons Ukraine was part of Russia when they were installed
@@elliotlambert3817 I am not sure of the origin story of the actual warheads, but I assume Ukrainians built them on their own territory while they were under the ussr. When the ussr disbanded etc, whatever nukes Ukr had were left there and belonged to them. Belarus did the same. they had nukes from before and they owned them when russia left.
The Western partners, have upheld their part of the deal, they've provided military and financial assistance counting in the hundreds of billions since 2014.
And let's not kid ourselves, there was no other choice for Ukraine post Soviet Union, nobody not Russia nor the West were ready to accept a nuclear Ukraine for different reasons, and they would've pressured Ukraine to give those up. So stop with this deal talk already, it wasn't really a deal, more of a surrender, one in which Ukraine, West or Russia had no other alternative
It is very unhelpful for Mr Galiotti to repeated say there is Ukraine war fatigue irrespective whether there is or not. This just hypes up additional tension. It is also unfair to say Ukraine is ungrateful. Ukraine is under so much pressure to survive this brutal invasion. It is so disappointing and frustrating to never have military support and aid provided when Ukraine needs it. I would like to hear Biden actually say Russia must be militarily defeated. 'There is a fear in the West...' - this always makes me close the tab. Why this mantra?
Those who call for more "gratitude" on part of Ukraine for arms supplies, those should re-read the Budapest memorandum. The "West" is failing Ukraine miserably, hoping to somehow regain the world as it used to be.
By not providing all the necessary armaments to Ukraine in a responsive and timely manner, the West plays into putler's hands and actually increases the risk of a direct confrontation with russia.
I agree, but useful idiots are everywhere
God forgive us if we ever stop supporting Ukraine. We would never live down the shame of the atrocities that would follow.
personally i think usa should step up and keep helping Ukraine not turn it's back on them
Great full? It's hard to take the time to be greatfull when you are fighting for your life!😤
True I agree
Germany announced on friday that it will double the military support for Ukraine in 2024. A good sign against "fatigue".
It will contribute more than all other european nations combined.
That's particularly good of them seeing as they are suffering economically right now. But as another poster pointed out, this aid is not a "gift" and the flow on effects will stimulate their economy while expanding their defence capabilities in the long run.
What escalation worries? Russia is at war with the West but the West keeps worrying about possible escalation if they defend themselves. It's insane.
The escalation argument became silly on day 4 when Russia was all in on the war.
No it's not insane. The very suggestion that there are escalation worries in the west is a made up pile of propaganda. That's how it works
Russia could directly attack NATO. They would lose but not before a lot of lives were lost and infrastructure destroyed. Then there is the fear of nuclear war.
The West keeps speaking about its desire not the "escalate the situation", and at the same time it keeps turning a blind eye to the continuous escalation on the part of the other side of the conflict.

Thanks, Rimes Radio.
As a ukrainian, with a UK BSc, I totally stand behind like 90% of the arguments (and claims) presented.
However, there is one issue that was omitted by the speakers, which to my understanding is worth throwing into the mix.
And its the fact that despite immense support from the west, with taxpayers’
money (that could’ve been used for rebuilding domestic roads, hospitals, schools, yes) - the western countries are investing into their future capability.
The caability of NOT spending not billions but trillions dollars/ euro/quid on defense in 20 years’ time. Defense against a united f*king juggernaut that China, russian and peace-meal-drained-and-assimilated Ukraine will present in a form of some USSR 2.0, spanning 1/5 of planet’s surface and with 2 billion of brain-washed loyal comrades. And this has happened before, not 100 years ago, on this very same soil.
So yes, by all means western backers can have these money invested not in Ukraine’s victory, but elsewhere. But if they do - their (your) children might not have this luxury in the future
Where did you say you lived ? Which country ?
Good point. China (under Xi) is scary enough on its own, but if you sum up the entire anti-Western coalition of China + Russia + Muslim countries + some African and south American countries, the future prospects are terrifying.

UK needs to stop interfering in what Ukraine is doing and focus on giving them what they ask. They are treating Ukraine as if it doesn't know what it is doing. History has demonstrated that concern applies to the UK, not to Ukraine. Ukraine knows Russia and Russians far better than the UK ever will.
What the UK can do is stop lying that Russia is in the UN and using that lie to stop the UN from doing what it is supposed to be doing.

OK, 2 other points. NATO and Russia talk. Any real red lines are mentioned.
The West has told Ukrainians not to attack Russian civilian targets inside Russia. The West has also stated Western weapons cannot be used in Russia at all. The grey areas are Belograd Oblast and the area between Luhansk City and Taganrog to Rostov.
Ukrainian assassinations have only involved non political leaders in Russia and military/collaborators in occupied Ukrainian territories. This conforms to Western guidelines. Therefore, any targets within these limits is fair game.

James Hanson,
I just wanted to say how impressed I am with your interview technique. I see so many interviewers who have an agenda or an apparent solution to how a problem is managed and then repetitively coerce their interviewee to their own vision, pressuring the interviewee to provide answers that meets their own agenda. I find this pitiful and immensely painful to listen to as a viewer.
In stark comparison to what I describe above, James your questions are always succinct, brief, never labored and they trigger the interviewee to impart a very helpful perspective, their own perspective, seemingly devoid of the biases of the interviewer. This is fabulous in my view.
James, your interview technique suffers none of the poor and pitiful traits that I so off see in other interviewers. You are such a refreshing delight to listen to and so when I tune in to some Times Radio and see that you are at the helm, I eagerly continue to see what you and your interviewee have to say. I observe this great trait your have, time and time again, it is not a once off or occasional good result, this is how you operate.

Mark explained What’s up? This is to monitor Enemy/Friendly thinking. He did not explain Are we right? Both use bites of information collected from multiple sources. All assets can be collectors and/or assigned collection tasks. After What’s up creates an Assumption, collection becomes specific tasks to confirm or deny Are we right?
During wartime, actual battle plans ID many question areas called DPs, Decision Points). Collectors have to be in place at DPs with enough lead time to allow the Commander time to make a decision at the DP.
When not on a physical battlefield, the DPs could be a meeting place of a key political or military leader. Having eyes on allows a decision to be made. It’s not always a movie assassination. A meeting could confirm a deal or potential alliance. If an alliance, the DP could be to use a satellite to monitor arms shipments or troop movements. The Ukrainian government had centralised a lot of the processes so they require documents meting central protocol standards, but still there is the possibility for chiefs to override .
