Amazing views of your beautiful country ! Thank you for this update ,hoping the dormant giant doesn’t wake up with huge thunder,in the mean time we all enjoy the natural beauty of Iceland, thanks and safe travels !
Katla is definitely up to something this year. I hope she is just having a restless sleep and doesn't suddenly wake up as that would be much bigger than anything we have seen over the last few decades.
@@JustIcelandic Hiya, could you do a video about the 1918 eruption, please? What were the consequences for Iceland and Europe? Thank you very much Take care and GBY
Wonderful video Gylfi. I really struggle to comprehend the scale of the landscape, it is so massive and mysterious - I bet there're so many hidden landscapes within and around the glacier (most rarely explored). I hope it never goes bang again, but we will see, these floods are very intriguing.
The view from that high up shows the mud washed into the sea from the two floods, which is cool. Also, the shot over the Thorsmörk hills shows how truly massive Katla is. At first I thought it was the clouds, but then I realized those are some awfully solid clouds.
Good evening Gylfi , greetings from Devon, uk. Yet another fascinating video with your insights about the continually evolving nature of your extraordinary island. Be well …
Hello Gylfi Thank you for a great update on the Katla volcano and the Mýrdalskökull glacier, and the amazingly beautiful views from your drone. I can imagen Katla must becoming a great concern for the people of Iceland, that would be a devastating disasters for us all around the world if Katla erupted. Thanks again and stay safe.
Katla is teasing us all the time so we might be safe for a few more years, but I do however thing the experts are right. its something more cooking than usual, and it don't smell good
Brilliant update, thank you. There was yet another M3 earthquake there last night. Those little volcano elves are having a right good party down there in the depths of Katla aren't they lol
Love your channel! An Icelandic horse lover, I absolutely love your style and content! Thank you for all of the hard work you put in to bring us such great content! May God Bless You!
Good morning Gylfi, usually from Massachusetts but now from Iceland too! I will be traveling along the South Coast tomorrow, and knowing that Katla had a 3.5 earthquake only hours ago and after watching the video, I will be keeping a sharper eye on her for certain! Thank you for the wonderful video footage of the area, as always! -Karen
It will be a difficult decision when it comes to alerting tourists about the potential for danger in this area. A difficult balancing act between enough to keep them safe but not so much that they stay away from Iceland entirely. I do not envy the decision makers! Yet another beautiful video from our favourite Iceland information source. I am regularly amazed at how high your drone is able to fly and how steady/stable it is!
Many thanks, drone videos are very stable now but I sometimes have to do some fixing in post though. Have lots to show from the summer so stay tuned :)
Excellent video Gylfi, as always!! Absolutely LOVE the drone footage in this one - absolutely beautiful!! It definitely raises an eyebrow to hear of so many floods in such a short time, that's for sure. Hopefully this is just Katla burping, and not getting ready for a big event. If a big event were to happen, I'd be fearful for the residents of Vík. I am always amazed by the efficiency of the Icelandic people! Here in the U.S., that road would've taken years to repair, countless pointless meetings, and miles of government red tape. Kudos to the workers for getting that repaired so quickly! Just goes to show what a "can-do" attitude can accomplish... and perhaps a bit of the þetta Reddast philosophy as well :p I agree with your suggestion - a SMS warning is a great idea!! A little information never hurts, and worst-case scenario, people are more informed and better prepared. I hope the Icelandic Officials heed your recommendation! Thank you again, Gylfi! You always bring the best information and videos!!
Good evening Gylfi. I hope you are well. Another excellent update video on Katla. My tour wasn't affected by the glacial flood that happened last month as we were driving along the south coast when the glacial flood started. I do like the south coast of Iceland. Got to stay in Vik this time and visited the church that's overlooking Vik.
Good evening Glyfi I have been in your home area of Akureyri for a few days I kept looking for little white car with camera mounted on the friont, now heading down is east side at Laugar. And I might have got myself another job to come back to my spiritual home. Great informative video as always

Good morning from Stockholm - So thanks a lot for uppdating 👍 - Hope that Katla Volcano System is still calming cause we (my thai friends and I) will drive to Vik i Myrdal again next June. But we can stop Nature process, alright. A little scary but must to accept if Katla Eruption will begin. Only change A trip plan. Take Care & Best Wishes
What a magical land. I sometimes wonder if mother nature put it there to show us her power and the strength of the people of Iceland . Another marvellous piece of filming.
Since it's no longer summer, this latest flooding doesn't seem like it can be due to seasonal melting -- unless your country also has been experiencing unseasonably warm weather. I hope the warning system you mentioned gets made more robust before anything happens. Congratulations on 102k subscribers and thank you for another beautiful video of your country!
The seasonal earthquakes last into October since it's not so cold now, still melting and no new snow yet. And thanks for watching, finally did the 100k target, took a while :)
Stunning footage! Strange seeing the finger of the glacier that I climbed in February. Still recognisable, heading up towards the ice cap, but with so much less surrounding snowscape, of course. It's a beautiful mountain to climb, and the place where I really felt a bond with Iceland.
Excellent video as always, you are doing a Great job of spoiling us with your beautiful work. Coffee coming next week. Please, I Hope You Have a Better Day, Boscawen NH
You took good advantage of some beautiful weather to get the video shots you used here. I hope that Katla gives folks plenty of warning before she does anything dramatic.
Iceland is certainly going through interesting times at the moment, I hope Katla doesn't cause any losses if it ends up waking up. Thanks for the great visuals.
I hope so too, she usually wakes up shaking and I'm mostly worried about hikers in the region that need longer time to move back to the highway from where it's easy to get into safety.
Thank you for another informative video about your beautiful country, beautiful and desolate but with a reminder that there is some danger if you don't take care.
Gorgeous drone footage! If I lived around there, I would have my really good gas mask purchased, along with replacement filters. (To avoid any last minute rush if large earthquakes around Katla begin!). I can only imagine the amount of ash to come through a glacier.
Such a beautiful landscape around Katla, your drone flights really capture the ethereal nature of it Gylfi. I'd be concerned crossing a wide coastal plain where jökulhlaups occur without a good SMS warning system in light of this recent frequency. I get that GOV doesn't want "scare" tourists but I'd be more inclined to advise *all* tourists arriving in Iceland about the various risks.
Wow that is huge. It took some time berfore I realiced that the background at 3:32 wasn't just a cloud but also the vulcano. Very beautiful footage. I suddenly wanted to visit but I think I belong to the group of people who wil haev to wait for a long time
Hope you can make it to us some day but this shot is from a long trip that I filmed both from the drone and the car, trying to figure out how I present it but I know you will like it :) Coming soon...
You talk about your volcanos like someone talking about the different characters of the various animals of his live stock: With respect, with care, with love, sometimes with a bit of worry. How to read them, about their unique behaviour, what to expect, how to take care, about the danger they could be and about the way to handle it. You make me feel kind of at home in Iceland and become comfortable with the idea of volcanos around. And I am from Austria, where the nearest active volcano is really, really far away.
There's a nice article - in a scientific journal mind you - about hazards from Katla volcano ("Katla volcano in Iceland, potential hazards and risk assessment"). Seems to be a homage to Tarkovski's , Solaris , and an indication of the destruction .Thanks Brother.
Many thanks for that as ever. Yet another background worry for everyone. I did though like your aerial view of Solheimajokull Glacier on which I've walked several times. Back in September I picked up a piece of ice enclosing both coarse ash from Katla 1918 and very, very fine ash from Eyjafjallajokull in 2010 and was astonished to see just how fine that ash was - mixed with water it becomes paste (which I think is then used for beauty treatments, it's so fine!). A graphic reminder of just how powerful steam explosions are. My father (who studied the nineteenth century in Britain) often used to say that my interest in volcanoes made him think of the energy from steam which powered the UK's industrial revolution. I've never seen a large-scale explosive eruption, possibly just as well! My friends here in the UK sometimes find my volcanoes a bit alarming.
Old Lady Katla should be treated with the greatest respect. Her historic eruptions have sent large ash plumes over NW Europe, with a significant effect on the weather, but some of her (prehistoric) eruptions in the last few millennia were even larger.
I agree, it's a huge system and the Eldgjá story.......to huge to be even talked about too much around here...The Katla system is way larger than most think...
