Black mangalitsas are extinct, because mangalitsa breeding was shunned during the communist period in Hungary, when the state-owned and unionised farms prefered to breed the same leaner kinds that were becoming profitable in the west at the time.
The other three kind were barely saved, with only 200 sows being found in the entire country when conversation efforts finally started, and even that was practically by accident: a spanish ham-factory owner came looking for lardy pigs, but the farmers would only show him the lean kind, so he prepared to leave, when one mangalitsa just trotted by. The guy demanded to see it's meat, despite the farmers telling him it's not a good breed, and the rest is history.

Black Mangalitsas are not quite extinct. Serbia saved some genetics purely by accident. In an remote village somewhere near Romanian border an guy from Leskovac stumbled across an old boar of black manga by chance. He bought him off from an old man for trifles and later he released the boar on swallow belied mangas.. Sumadinka the old serbian breed, now extinct, is one third of manga lives in genetics of Zdravinjska pig- mix of swallow-belied manga and Sumadinka. There is also Moravka, mix of Sumadinka, Black Mangalitsa and Berkshire) . This Moravka is extremely interesting pig created around 1850, probably one of the best foragers and the best mother!
I Have a herd of Mangalitsas that are living in a forest and among them tree sows that carries the genes of black mangulica, great, great gran daughters of the black boar that I mentioned.

@@TheHoneystead Just to update on that one, in Hungary we reverse bred other mixed mangalicas and we started breeding pure black mangalicas in 2020. Now they have a breeding aid for the farmers and we have plenty in a few agricultural unis. Happy ending after all.
Never have seen or heard this breed of pig. Very interesting. Pigs in sheeps clothing.

Just an FYI, I hope you realize that a Berkalitsa cross no longer has the desired fat quality that a pure Mangalitsa has. Meat quality suffers a bit also IMHO.
Mangalitsa, when pasture raised and not fed corn or soy the fat has the equivalence to Olive Oil as far as Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats! This fat melts below our body temperature! This is the only animal that you can eat the fat and have it help raise HDL and lower LDL cholesterol! Eat a piece of Mangalitsa fat, take a drink of ice water and you will find NO greasy film in your mouth!
I am VERY passionate about these pigs. I raise them in North Central Iowa. The Iowa Wollschwein Bauernhof or the Iowa Wooly Pig Farm.

We feed ours milk, yogurt, cheese, squash, pumpkins, apples, pears, cherries, peaches, plums, water melons, pineapples, mangoes, kiwis, cucumbers, zucchinis, broccolis, cauliflower, cooked potatoes, cooked sweet potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, corn, fresh baked bread, and acorns. My pigs love the variety.

Love, love, love this video. Heritage meat is incredible (have heard Mangelista is the best), I actually was not a pork fan prior to raising our Berkshire/Hampshire crosses, they were such wonderful animals, I still miss them dearly.

Our girls raised hogs for 4H market animal projects as well as sheep. However, now that they are grown and we do hogs for ourselves as well as fun we have raised another heritage breed Tamworth. You are spot on with the meat quality! The Tamworth were the best pork we've ever raised - bacon fatthy goodness. They took longer to "grow", but they were long and huge! The "plant" we delivered them to for processing said they were the largest hogs they've done. We don't do it for a business, or sell any, just for our family and friends. Thanks for showing us yours!
Our kids do the 4H as well! I have a difficult time with them showing the typical fair pig when we raise this breed for such a quality of meat! It’s truly unlike any Pork ❤️

I’ve incorporated Mangalitsa into the pig I developed. A swallow belly sow turned out to be a rock star and now has a son as our senior boar. I’ve used Large Black, Old Spot, Red Wattle, York, Duroc.
My hogs avg 285 at 6 months now. The fat hogs seem to be about ideal when the finished product has a 1/4 manga in it. Just my experience. Excellent video and your hogs look super healthy.

Great video and I have never heard of those kind of pigs I work for West Virginia Animal Science Farm in Morgantown West Virginia and I didn’t know there was such a breed of pig thank for sharing this video.

An old breed that has been developed well, high cull rate. Only the ones that survive the heat and the cold winters with minimal care are the ones that bred.
This natural culling method makes for hardier pigs that are robust with stronger immune systems as well as being better adapted.

You also need to mention the multiple health benefits of eating Mangalitsa. It is known in Eastern Europe as the "Salmon with 4 legs" ,because its lard consists 70% unsaturated fats.. Also, Mangalita meat is a premium meat ( just like to Angus is considered a premium meat in beef).

Good video, healthy pigs. Just one remark, they aren't black magalitsa pigs, we called them swallow belly magalitsa in Hungary. :)
I love our mangalitsas, they are just amazing pigs. There mothering is amazing, we only had one who sadly had to leave leave the farm after abandoning two litters. We have more babies coming in may from our top sow, yay!
How are the birth numbers for you. We have had anywhere from 1-11 babies.
Our girls put out really large litters.. I think the largest one was 16!

It is a Hungarian breed. I'm Hungarian myself, we used to have them.

Those are the coolest pigs I've seen. It would be interesting to see how their wool compares to that of a sheep.
Their coat is a bit tougher, but their undercoat is so fluffy ❤️

in my country peasants used to have mangulica pig and black pig called fajferica, both breed extremely easy live in open space, no matter how cold could be....unfortunately, today this two breeds are rarely to see, some enthusiastic farmers keep them alive and science confirm quality of meat....good choice for your farm👍

Are they real bad rooters? We'd want one for a pet and land management. I"m not sure between them, Kunes, Old spot for our place yet. I don't want the land torn up badly, but enough to keep the weeds down and so forth. We have horrible invasive weeds on our land in central Ky. Poison Hemlock, Jap. honeysuckle, Wintercreeper are horrid here.

I hear Kune Kunes are a great breed as well! Size would be a difference and also do you research on butchers if you plan on using a facility. Some butchers won’t take smaller breeds of pigs, but if you’re doing it yourself... then that is awesome! Home butchering is a true art! ❤️

It is from Hungary.. in 1830's with mixture of a Serbian breed + wild boar and thankfully survived communism, when thet're thought it is unhealthy for consumption.

I want to raise this breed too, but like you say it is near impossible to come by.
I sometimes miss the snow from that part of VA since moving to the beach, we might get some snow once a year, but I don't miss it enough to want to come back to it, lol. Are you using a different camera? The video quality in the past few videos has been great! Do you guys ever sell like half a hog? I would to come up there and one sometime.

Mangalița (Mangalitsa) is a Transilvanian breed (romanian word).... Transylvania is right on the border with Hungary. I can't believe how many pigs you have!!! They are so well kept.... You, my friend, are amazing.... everything you touch, it trives! I'm very proud of you! Keep it up!😀

We do! They are a lovely breed!
Question do you move them or they permanently live in one place? And how big you contained them?
We rotate them between 3 plots every month or based on and foraging needs. My areas are a couple acres! Moving them around helps reduce parasites as well as reducing feed cost and land preservation:)

That's a lie ! that Mangalitsa was produce for the first time hundreds years ago by Serbia people (EX Yugoslavia) They used to be gipsy 's pigs because they were not picky.All those countrys (Romania ,Bulgaria,Yugoslavia ,Hungary ).

@@TheHoneystead I see...well, in southeast asia, we usually give some caladium (angel wings) and cheap rice. Some asian also giving their pigs their household food wastes as well, especially the commercial pink skin pigs but things doesnt work that way for Bornean beared wild pigs, a kind of non breeding pigs (original species) which only can be seen in Borneo Island

Do you smoke any of your pig products? Do you feed acorn to your pigs? When it comes to slaughtering your pigs, do you have to do it through a butcher or are you allowed to do it yourself and would you do it European style? i.e people would wake up early in the morning to slaughter the pig in a humane way, then they place hay over the mangalitsa pig's body and set it on fire to burn the fur off. Then they scrub all the dead fur and skin off and proceed to cut up the pig based on cuts like leg ham, pork rasher, pig head etc. Do you also do it like this?
We use a USDA butcher to process our meats mainly because we can legally sell it after. I have done them myself and it takes a good day to process! We have a scolding tank to help with fur 😉
Yeah that seems to be the same rules here in Australia. It has to go through a slaughterer and have all kinds of licences and approvals from councils and government.
do they struggle in heat with their fur?
I do know farmers who do raise them in the south and as long as they have shade and a water hole… you should be ok :)
