I remove the hairspring from the balance and reposition it until the pallet fork is sitting in-between the banking pins. There's a tool that allows you to adjust it without removing the hairspring, but I've always preferred to take it off completely on pocket watches. I will say that while it's nice to get the beat error below 1ms, there is little to no advantage so long as it's under 3ms. It won't affect timekeeping or performance at all.
