I've Never Seen A Balance Wheel Like This
This is not your average Lepine V Movement. Made by Emile Bourquin around 1860, this pocket watch has what I assume is a decorative balance wheel inlaid with some seethrough material. I've only seen two other examples of this balance wheel, so it must've been short lived.

WW2 Era Gruen Wrist Watch With A Unique Diamond Set Dial

Gruen made some fine watches in their heyday, including this one. Manufactured during World War 2, I'm sure this watch has seen quite a bit in it's lifetime. A beautiful example of american ingenuity, patented by Ezra C. Fitch in 1879. This example of a dustproof pocket watch case with a screw down crown is a beautiful one. The movement needed quite a bit of work, but it's now ticking away and ready for another lifetime of use. The movement is a Waltham Model 1877 from 1881. An antique Omega Goliath 30 ligne travel watch from 1899, tiptoeing the line between pocket watch and clock. In this video I restore the watch portion as best is possible (parts availability for these movements is nearly nonexistant) both mechanically and cosmetically. Stay tuned for part 2 where I restore the outer leather and sterling silver case! #watch #omega #omegawatches #goliath #carriag...

    Andrew from "Andrew Morgan Watches" and 'Watchfinder' previously told me about Waltham watches a little while back... they're something special....especially the Railway grade movements... the decoration is something to behold! I'm going to try to get one of their smaller movements to transplant into a wrist watch soon....I'm in Love with them.

    • @ToadHorologist
      @ToadHorologist 2 місяці тому

      They are something special! Just be warned that the lack of shock protection coupled with a large and heavy balance wheel makes these larger movements much more prone to balance staff breakage when worn as a wrist watch. That wouldn't be as much of a problem on a 12s or 6s movement, but I don't think anyone's making conversion cases for them. Good luck on your watch adventures!

    Great work and excellent results returning this to the precision timekeeper it was when it left the factory. It would be great if you made a video that explains and demonstrates the adjustment of a watch to keep time across positions. Far too many people who work on watches have no idea what dynamic poising is or how it is done. They also resort to static poising unnecessarily, often to the detriment of the watch. A video which starts out with a serviced movement, free of mechanical defects (otherwise dynamic poising is pointless) and sets out the basics of positional adjustment would be UA-cam gold.

    Couple of comments / suggestions: Why would you use plastic to protect the dial while removing the hands only to turn around and pick up the dial WITH STEEL TWEEZERS???? PLEASE invest in some carbon fiber or wood tipped tweezers if you feel the need to pick up dials with them. I also recommend that you invest in brass tweezers for watch repair. The plating / finishing on watch plates is easily scratched using steel tweezers. Brass tweezers are much less likely to do so. Do not use "auto focus" when filming videos. It will change the focus whenever it picks up something closer to the lens (ask me how I know) ;-). Swiss movement usually have a mechanism called a "boot" that locks the hairspring between itself and the guard pin. DO NOT bend the guard pin! The boot rotates using a screwdriver to release the hairspring. The spacing between the boot and the guard pin will affect timing in certain positions if not correct. Why did you remove the balance wheel? Instead, remove the balance jewel set from the balance, reattach the balance to the main plate and run it through your cleaning process. No need to remove the balance wheel for cleaning unless you need to re-staff it or do hairspring work. Might invest in a timegrapher (even a cheap foreign made one) if you don't already have one.

      Thanks for letting me know about the hairspring boot! I guess I've been lucky so far, timekeeping has been perfect on this watch (and others with this setup) in the horizontal positions. I always remove the balance completely to inspect the pivots (to make sure they're not bent, mushroomed or scored) as well as to inspect the hairspring. Carbon tipped tweezers are definitely on the long list of things to get but honestly I can't justify them, I've never had my tweezers leave any kind of damage on a part so far. Also I forgot that I could turn auto focus off on my phone, so that will be off on the next video.

      @@ToadHorologist I've been working on watches since 2001 and have learned a LOT of things along the way. There was no YT or even internet for me to search for information. I love to help people whenever I see them making the same mistakes I made in the past. That's how watchmakers aquire such a stash of "parts" ;-). If you have a timegrapher you might consider showing the before/after results of the service. I always look forward to seeing the results. I too have a YT channel but wont' promote it here of course :-).

      @@home-dp6oh I slept on it and went ahead and bought some brass and plastic tweezers. Just because something hasn’t been damaged yet doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future! Thanks again for the advice
