- Cardboard is my friend when helping to physically lay out the return companionway on starboard. The current design doesn’t work in terms of ergonomics and step design.

Looks like a dangerous waste of space to me, James.
Full height cupboard either side of the door, box steps down the middle, with storage beneath. You know it makes sense.
I hope he listens to your comment, the amount of energy wasted on curved stairs that don't work has become a bit nutty.

A straight run of alternating tread stairs would be my choice.
@@Orxenhorf Those spacesaver stairs are dangerous, too, especially for small kids, or people who've had a few drinks. Plus you'll be giving up under-stair storage.
It's a solved problem, but it's not my boat, and James is free to do it wrong. 🤣
You do make problems for yourself, there must be loads of different examples you could find on other channels. The kids will finish up falling. Change the whole idea and have the steps straight down.
My granddad was a carpenter and I always remember him saying that stairs were about the trickiest job to get right. Good luck mate.

Others have said it James. This is a massive waste of space. I know you’re trying to reproduce what you saw on the Braidbar show boat at Crick but I’m afraid you haven’t got a chance using these methods. Some neat box steps with storage, in straight down to give space either side for storage. This won’t encroach too far into the galley space.

James, if you have your heart set on winders, redo the hatch so there's headroom for the 2nd step. I agree with sarkybugger, you're better off going straight down. Especially if you are selling this boat.
Sorry to say that top step just doesn’t look safe to me.
I'm thinking strait down gains more space on both sides. I do like the curved and flowing design with the counters and such also curving
Wonderful nonsense. I'm with your mate Sarky. Box steps down the middle, your kids will love them, cupboards (lockers if you must ) either side. Easy.
Unlesss your cabinet making skills and tools available, have wonderfully improved, you will have a hard time making that design look good.
Liking the curved step idea. Maybe get a Newel post to tie all the stairs together in the centre of the curve, floor to ceiling it might help balance you coming in and out and you can then build your banister for the top step off of it. Lovin the videos 👍
I do a few winding staircases each year, your nearly there , just have a look online at how they do the winders or "kites" out from the newel , purely for ideas. I`d just be careful with how you have some of the cardboard curved bit at the moment as could be a trip hazard
Yeah, really nice design. Maybe have a pull out drawer on the bottom step as well?
Sorry...having had family live aboard a boat for many years, I have to agree with @sarkybugger5009. An easy-to-navigate, straightforward set of steps was crucial, especially if someone had to get down below (or vice versa!) in a hurry for whatever reason. You're bending over awkwardly as you're trying to navigate that curve, so that's probably going to be a head banger, and you do NOT want to risk injury to your head anywhere, but especially not on a boat. A bannister/railing blocking what should be easy access/egress makes me uneasy too. You have enough fun curves and angles already going on in your galley, which is going to be beautiful no doubt! At the end of the day, it's your boat of course....just my two cents! All the best!

James, I really love your creativity. I would go back and take a look at Braidbar Reginald No. 200 walk though @ 6:00 minutes. They are using a convex stair with a concave banister. You might be able to use your concave stair idea for your first step with that sort of layout. Just an idea.
I had enough trouble doing mine and they were just bog standard straight down the middle. It's getting there though.
Put up your banister temporarily to see the difference it makes to access and watch you're shoulder as you came in and out, it gets very close to the corner so i thinks a cupboard there is out of the question. I know you're aware obviously but the reason it worked well on the show boat was the much bigger hatch. I respect you're determination to make it work.
James, go back to your Crick Show video and study how they did the entry steps! You don't want to do this one wrong!
Well you nearly there on the steps but they will take up a lot of space but your boat your way tc the oldies 👋👍😉

If you must go for curved steps look at getting a circular stair case and try that perhaps ???❤❤
What a palaver … bin this idea and just go back to the straight steps that almost every narrowboat uses.

My first thought; the curved space, could be a display case (leaded glass curved doors)? ;-)
Maybe have the bottom step swivel from the wall to access batteries under second step (latch hidden in display case)?

These steps are taking a lot of space up. Stairs like on a wide beam would look just as good with storage.
Hey James! Amazing work your doing mate! Got bit of a random question, how tall are you? and how tall is the inside height of project 58? I’m looking to get a narrowboat myself and just wondering what heights other boats are. Cheers James keep up the good work!!
The treads need to be kite shape, at least three-quarter, thick then you can put some D shaped moulding on the front and the riser is normally about 7 inches high

With three steps you always end up with the wrong foot on the top step.
I saw loads of curved designs at the crick boat show and thought they were stylish enough. Easier to get down as I'm always banging my head or twisting my back. So these look ok. Its what suits you James and what you find comfortable. I like your thought process. Keep it going. You're doing fine x

Central stairs no waste of space or time they work, unfortunately I feel what your trying to do is a huge waste of space, obviously just my opinion man
I wonder if you are planning to put a fence at the edge of the first step. I think it would be most people's thought that the steps would straight as they are on other narrow boats - something to prevent people from walking straight into the boat. I would walk straight rather than having to turn to my right. I may not realize that. I'm just thinking in terms of others who would also think the steps are ahead instead of to the side.
I honestly don't think that cardboard cladding will work in the long run bud...... with the water and kids n all :P

Tread height should be 192mm. this is standard.
Looks like you are getting there. Trying different sized people is a good idea. A ship's ladder would take less room, of course, but that is a long way from the stern down to the floor for a ladder. Kids would love it but adults might not be as enthused.
I think the idea with the steps to the side would be nice. I think you were inspired by a boat you saw at Crick. I don't see that the problem is in the design of the steps though. If you made the top hatch wider, however, it would accommodate all your needs re head room and give you more options re the shape of the steps.... good luck with it all, James.
I do love the term cardboard aided design.
Where the battery is sitting put in a possibles closet. A space for jackets, hats, gloves, chains, ropes, anchor, electric outlets, charger, you know a place for any thing you could possibly need while on the move. Possibles Closet; related to the North American Mountain Mans Possibles Bag; Any thing in it could possibly kill you! That possibles Bag.

It is a pity you couldn't make an access step outside the cabin leading to the first step inside the cabin, it would mean doing some cutting and welding of the outside platform and not encroach onto the engine bay access .

I think normal steps is the way to go. You seem to be making it too difficult for yourself mate.
What about a "ship's ladder"? Two sets of alternating rungs. Allows a steep angle that is still easy to climb, using minimal space.
Exactly what I was thinking. They use them for loft or or mezzanine floors.
They are a bugger to use when half cut

Look at normal stairs the top stair has an angle to the next step and so on look at conventional stairs
I think the return steps work well. My only suggestion would be to forgot curves for 30 degree angles to turn the corner on the top and middle steps? My inclination with no practical experience is that curves may be tricky for foot fall and curves are always more expensive.

Maybe a vertical steel pole from floor to ceiling at the turn of the steps as opposed to banisters?
Should look nice if you are also going to curve the galley units.
I like the way you worked out the design of your steps but in my opinion the top step should just be a diagonal rather than a curve so it matches the second step. I think that pointy curve bit just looks a bit wired. Other than that the steps seem to work well.
What was there originally? I think you are trying to do something that your boat isn’t meant to and as a result it’s all a bodge and eyesore. Keep it simple but better quality finish.
You could have a vertical pole going from floor to ceiling as a hand hold for going up and down the steps. And then used for a bit of pole dancing on the night time😂
Steps much better but personally i wouldn't bother with the rail/banister just ise a grab handle on the side simpler neater les clutter and atill safe, more open plan.. great qork James

That top step looks horrible like that. Honestly you need to back the Crick video and study what you liked about the steps bc this ain't looking too good. 🤷👍👍
Personally I think your wasting a lot of time on those steps that look awkward. Why not save space and just take your counters down to the door and put in removable steps. What goes behind the cabinet near the steps could be what you don’t need to access much, like your batteries.
