  • Drum brakes get a bad rap...many are mystified by all of the springs and leavers these things have. Watch Jim disassemble, clean and replace the drum brakes on this Jeep Wrangler TJ. Other Wranglers and drum brake systems are very similar. It's not that hard!

    Just purchased a black ‘97 Wrangler TJ in NZ soft top. It ‘s ex-Japan done 127,000 kms, lifted (no idea what) with 35” tires - immaculate for its age. However, needs new rear shoes and wheel cylinders, so your video will be invaluable. A number of other age related replacements also required e.g. all suspension and body bushes have perished with age - so full bushing replacement. No rust of course as no salted roads where it came from nor here. In fact I do not know what the Japanese do with such vehicles - drive around town I guess. RHD of for us and Japanese . Thanks for you video as will be rewatched for above job. Also watched your AC video as no cooling either. Thank for taking the time to make.

    If the self adjusting arm doesn’t make contact or seem to be working. Ensure the silver cable guide is properly seated in its hole. It’s very easy for this to get pulled out when stretching the top aft spring. Mine was just slightly out and caused the system not to work. Whoever rebuilt previous to me made the same mistake.

      Great! If parking brake seems "loose" it's the cable pivot not seated correctly... I chased that for some time before I figued it out.

      @@jimsjeeps9782 I was paying attention. I made sure cable pivot was flush with the shoe

    Great video Jim. Just subscribed 👍🏽. Working on my 2000 TJ and need to pull apart my partial install. Didn’t realize I needed to grease where the shoes slide

      Thanks for checking in! More videos coming, including adding an AC system to my YJ. Winter has not been kind to filming! Thanks for the sub!

    For those that wanted to see the EMERGENCY BRAKE hook up like I did, the First part is at 13:59 and the last part starts at 17:55..✅ it’s to Bad though Jim had the camera on the Wrong side with his hands 🙌 in the way, so I’m Not sure how much good it will do… 🤔🤔😩

      Oops... I will do better... The best advice on the E brake is to make sure the little pivot point cable bracket is in the hole all the way. If it is not, your E brake will seem very loose with too much play. If that's the case, re-inspect that and you will most likely find it's not correct... Thanks for the feedback on the camera work!

    Jim…what type/brand grease is the purple stuff…? Good vid, thanks.

      It's Permatex Purple Ceramic brake grease. Good stuff and one little jar lasts YEARS. I use it on caliper pins, and the rub points on the drum brakes.

    wondering how you got that brake adjuster cable on the bottom as a last step....not much room

    • @jimsjeeps9782
      @jimsjeeps9782  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, it's tight. The adjuster tab and the cable are set in place with the tab sitting on the adjuster splines. You are right, it's a bit tricky, but doable. If needed, use needle nose pliers to hold it and/or pull it into place.

    When you say knocking do you mean you could shake your cab and you’ll hear the knocking from the drum?

    • @jimsjeeps9782
      @jimsjeeps9782  Рік тому

      No. Applying the brakes there was a "loose" knocking sound because the shoes were not positively making contact with the drum.

    Camera angle doesn't let you really see what he is doing.

      I will try to be better with the camera work. You are right, this is a little sloppy.

    Should be removing lug nuts in cross pattern

    • @jimsjeeps9782
      @jimsjeeps9782  Рік тому +1

      Removing lug nuts can be done in any order. On re-install, its important to snug them up in a cross pattern, and then final torque also in a cross pattern. This ensures a balanced clamping force.
