Mazdaspeed 3 - MAF Connector Harness Replacement

  • In this video we install a new Mass Air Flow sensor connector replacement harness into the Mazdaspeed 3. This issue started a few years ago when I suddenly noticed my Long Term Fuel Trims deviating drastically from what they normally were. My first thought was an air leak, but after checking things over and doing more research, I discovered that this is actually a common issue caused by the electrical connection between the electrical pins in the MAF connector and wiring strands becoming weak. Since the MAF sensor tells the ECU how much air is going into the engine, these incorrect voltage signals prevent the ECU from accurately fueling the engine. Enjoy the video! Excellent video as always. I might need to do this on my 2.0 sedan. I've been struggling with a mysterious lean code for a while. I never considered the MAF connection. You may have saved the day.

    I just want to say thank you so much for your help and especially for your engine build video. I just finished the car 100% today and took her for her first drive! What an absolute dream! I will say, i didnt change anything with the exhaust but its significantly louder now 😅 maybe thats because big boy turbo or fmic? Idk lol.
    But thank you so much for your videos!

    I just got a p2188. Im hoping its my MAF but i dont want to narrow minded so im researching. Anyways! You know how it feels when you can tell your A/C kicks on, or your cruise is trying to correct itself while at steady speeds? Thats what my cars doing. If i try to accel before 3k rpm even in a lower gear, its got small hiccups. But arnt misfires.

      @WannabeTuners thank you! I start my engine build this coming weekend! I already have the main studs, head studs, bearings, rods and pistons. The gaskets, vvt, injector seals, balance delete arrives something this week. The core gets here Saturday.

    What was your stft and afr doing with the bad connector?

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  8 місяців тому

      The STFT would either be pegged at super rich (-) or lean (+) values in an attempt to try and correct the incorrect AFR detected at the primary O2 sensor. If the STFT reaches +/- 25% the ECU has pretty much hit it's correction limit, so the AFR ends up being way off, either too rich or too lean. This has a huge effect on how well the engine runs. For a while I was able to move the wires in such a way where it would work temporarily, but over time fuel trims would start to get weird again.

    Hey man, you said in your engine build video, that you had a local machine shop key your crank. Do you remember by chance, how much cost you? I very much want to go keyed, but the keyed crank is $1,500 😂

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  7 місяців тому

      Hey man the machine shop that I went with sent it out to another place that was able to do it. It costed me about $170 cad at the time. They only keyed the crankshaft and both sprockets. The crank pulley was not keyed.

    • @NoHairRedBeard
      @NoHairRedBeard 7 місяців тому

      @WannabeTuners the crank pulley doesn't really need to be keyed right? Mostly just crank and sprocket to avert skipping timing. I'm going for 550hp so really don't want to leave it up to friction 😅

      @WannabeTuners I know, I've watched it twice over the last year. I'm sure I'll watch it again. 🤣 I'm pulling the block out on Friday I believe, to find the damage, cylinder 2 doesn't go back down while hand cranking over.... sooo.... gonna buy some sleeves and have a local machine shop drop them in for me, and I'll do the graveyard build kit. It's going to be a slow build over the next 3 months or so. Power goals in the 600 range. Still trying to find the right exhaust manifold. I don't want to lose the unequal length rumble 😩

    @wannabetuners got a question for you, I have a BNRs4, same smoking issue at idle, and I got a hold of BNR and he recommended venting the top of my OCC to the intake pipe. I did. The car doesn’t smoke at idle, but it increased the idle rpm by about 300rpm and seems wonky. Can you give me some insight as to what you did for yours when you did it? Was there a check valve inline? Idk what it’s doing. Just seems wonky and off. Thanks man!

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  6 місяців тому

      Sounds to me like an air leak. Normally there is a one way check valve between the upper port on the OCC and the intake manifold to ensure no boost enters the OCC. Are you running a check valve?

    • @justgregkas
      @justgregkas 6 місяців тому +1

      @@WannabeTunersyessir. My current setup is DM plate/pcv valve to the catch can >> to the intake manifold. Check valve is inline between catch can and intake manifold. Catch can is VTA.
      Been watching some of videos on BNRs4 trying to resolve the smoking at idle. What solutions did you find? Aside from the oil pressure regulator setup, I don’t have that kind of cash flow to afford that at this time. Maybe once I get around to doing a built engine.

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  6 місяців тому

      @justgregkas Tbh I've tried a lot to get my old BNR S4 to stop smoking. Even with dual vented DM catch cans and an oil breather cap, I would still get a lot of smoke primarily at WOT in between shifts. So even with a lot of crankcase pressure relief, it would still smoke. The only thing that truly helped was dropping the oil pressure to the turbo via a Turbosmart regulator. Even then if I idle too long as the engine is warming up, I will still see some smoke that quickly burns off, but nowhere near what I was seeing before!

      @@WannabeTunersmine is primarily at idle. Spoke with my tuner, going to revert back to my original setup and he’s going to increase my idle a tad but he said he doesn’t think it’s an issue right now. But, thank you my dude for responding and chatting. Greatly appreciate your input!
