- Mattels Space 1999 Moon Base Alpha playset is made of many parts each with their own issues. This set needed the box repairing, the vinyl cleaning, new acetate console screen, and the flashing lights replacing. Lots to do and lots of different skills required.
This was a large project and there is much more about how I created the sticker and console screen files over on TP2. Follow these links to see more:-

This brings back memories of my 9 year old self putting this together on Christmas morning
Wow! I love these old playsets! Great restoration. Thank you Dave!
I remember back in early 2000 printing onto the old overhead projector clear sheets.
I recently bought some bookbinders glue to repair the spine of a hardback RPG book. It did an excellent job.
Always enjoy your videos and I have enjoyed toys as far as I can remember. I am over 50 now. I just cannot imagine that the people making them all those years ago expected someone to be caring so much for a box all these years later. Just really to contain the toy. (Hope that is not misinterpreted as not appreciating your work). 😊
Superb repair / restoration / update of this awesome, vintage Space 1999 Moon Base Alpha Playset, Dave.
Glad you like it!
Wow! Brilliant job. Your ingenuity at its best Dave! Well done
Really enjoying watching this Space 1999 recovery video, while building and painting my own Space 1999 Stun Gun resin kit.
Nice!
Hey Dave
Really enjoyed the video and great outcome.🙂
Take care and Happy Weekend to you and MrsTP 😊
Thanks 👍
what a timely video! I just received my Blu-ray copy of Gerry Anderson's Journey to the Far Side of the Sun a few minutes ago :)
Awesome video Dave. Quite a few components to it for sure. The extra videos on TP2 definitely added to it. The way you recreate the images for stickers, and that screen, still amazes me. I really liked what you did with the lighting elements. Works great, and nowhere near the temperature of the original bulbs used in these old toys. Which has to help with the degradation of the plastic. They are brittle enough, due to their age. Without having the heat from the bulbs adding to it. The box restoration was fantastic as well. As I said, just an all around great video, and restoration. As always thanks again for what you do. Never a dull moment. Looking forward to seeing the next in line. You and Mrs. Polloi take care and have a good day. God Bless.
Thanks Brian. This seemed like a good project to show all the processes involved. TP2 is a good place to show the photoshop work in full for those that want to see it. Cheers
Looking at your completed console, I couldn't help hearing the Moonbase bleeping noises!
Well done!
Wow I really enjoyed this. These old 70s playsets are so charming. Would love to see you restore more like these. 👍
Thanks!
Really cool fixes, will look great on display.
Loved this one! Very nicely done, Dave! Looks and feel original! Just spectacular, my friend!
Brilliant restoration dave looks perfect to me. awesome stuff.
Incredible. Absolutely love it. Wish it was mine. Lol. Really enjoyed this video. 👍🏻
Another great Toy Polloi fix! Great video, always enjoy them! Keep up the great work, keep the love and passion alive!
Thank you! Will do!
Nice work Dave. Money well spent on the printing.
Another brilliant restoration ❤
Thank you so much 😀
That’s just amazing. So cool how you also did the box! Please keep making great videos. 😃
Thank you! Will do!
I'm always amazed at what you can create with photoshop. Great video.
Thank you very much!
Love the Buck Rogers entrance! Although it didn't have the really intense music or William Conrad's voice, it still had the gravitas!
Thanks. Can't use the music due to copyright. So this will have to do.
Fantastic end result Dave!
Thanks 👍
Vision. Precision. Decision. Great job! 👍
Thanks!
Great work, the finished display looks amazing.
fantasTic!!! I love watching your videos!!
Very good restoration!
Many thanks!
Thanks! I always enjoy your videos.
Wow, thanks. Much appreciated.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!
That sheet turned out BEAUTIFULLY! Better than the original. The set looks GREAT!
That styrene fix on the cover/switch looks really clean, especially for how quickly you stuck it together. The effect of the staggered flashing lights also seems like it has to be a big improvement over the original. You really knocked this one out of the park!
Also, LOVE the Buck Rogers intro!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
The clear sheet came out well awesome making the set look way better than the original.
it look beautiful ! i have the figures i only need the playset !!! thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Impressive work! The only thing I might've done differently is that I've would've used the Countdown font for the console screen (as used in the first series of "Space: 1999", but perhaps that wouldn't be accurate to the playset).
The original used arial so that is what I went with. I may come back an do a custom with some more screen accurate designs as the over all look isn't very close to what you see in the show at all. Now I know the acetate works I could create something a lot better I feel. Cheers
What a wonderful piece, eva another great tip from a master restorer . Love your work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome playset and ptoject!
Thank you 🤗
It's listed now.....I love the intro ;)
I had this as a kid, pretty cool, you did a great job. The control center was taken from an earlier toy Mattel made. BTW, if you put a torch in that plastic it will melt; better use a flash light instead cave man LOL.
Thanks for the info!
Good job
Thanks
So cool I have the same set Great information 👍
Thanks for watching!
If you want a smaller profile without soldering you could use wago connectors
Thanks for the tip.
Probably is gonna look better with a black paper sheet inside with the text boxes cutout, so it only gonna look blinking inside of the text boxes
It's a shame the same Ingenuity is not used in playsets nowadays.
if you put the shrink wrap on the wires before soldering them together, will allow the join to be straight making it easier to route the cable.
Thanks for the tip.
Great stuff! Should have used the Westminster font though......
Why? It wasn't used on this sets stickers?
@@toypolloi oh ok, at 25.20 it looks like the original had the Westminster font that was used all over Space 1999
That's just plain old Ariel on those bits. Check out the full video on making the stickers over on TP2 you can see it all clearer there. Cheers
I know space 1999 and terra hawks are two of favorites Gerry Anderson shows . But what about something like secret service or Joe 90 have seen either of those shows ?
I never got into those myself.
The Mego Space 1999 figures from the UK would look much better in this set. Wish we’d have had those in the US instead of Mattel’s versions.
Sadly we get the cheapest option here in the states. Gotta maximize those profits
Both sets of figures have their own charm. But I do agree the Palitoy versions are superior.
@@geoffreyhebel2438 - I think it’s because Mattel win the license in the states and they didn’t see a reason to change the way figures were produced from the style used with Barbie. Mego innovated in that area. Never understood why , as a kid in the 70’s, those Barbie figures never had the articulation that Mego did. It was frustrating when Kirk and Spock
would beam down to planet Barbie when I play with my cousins.
Looks great but couldn't you have used wire nuts to make it easier to replace if got original parts?
You can use whichever method you prefer. For me a solder joint will always be the best option. And If I want to remove it I either unsolder or cut the wires. Hope that helps. Cheers
Hi there, you’re very good at repairing toys so I thought I’d ask if you had any ideas for making your own peg rack to display carded figures, I have a converted garage so space is tight but I wondered if there was some way of making some that could work even if it’s quite basic
I would have thought just using picture hooks would be a good starting point. I keep all my carded figures in plastic cases, then use hooks to hang them. Or rest them on shelves.
Could you not print onto acetate using a conventional printer? The reason I ask is because out of curiosity I was going through Google for videos on how to make custom slides for 3d view master. And I came across a youtube vid from some Indian guy who did exactly that. I'm pretty sure he wasn't using any specialised printing equipment and what he was printing was a hell of a lot smaller in scale and still seemed to do a reasonable job.
It all depends on the printer. I've never had much luck. The ink takes days to dry if it dries at all. That's why I sent this out to be printed. What came back looked and worked great.
Why is this video Unlisted?
You've found a secret entrance via TP2, shhh 🤫
Me too!! I couldn't find this video anywhere!
Anyone else think that looks like Sheldon?
"we are going to do something similar, but we are going to be using modern technology"
NO! You will go back in time, buy a new one off the shelf, remove the bulb and use that.
Great vid. Nice looking piece.
How do you get the belts on those figures to stay closed at the back. ?
Thanks. They don't have the belts currently.
