I must say this has been very helpful. 👍 I have an 8700K rig at 4.8 GHz with 32 G RAM, a RTX 3070, and Reverb G2. I also use 2 M.2 NVME SSDs - one for Windows, separate one for the game. I have been struggling to get anything comfortable in VR using WMR with OpenXR Dev Tool and beta NIS Scaler. Either the VR image was nauseating, stuttering, blurry, etc. Just couldn't find any combination of settings that felt right. What gets me is that many of the Videos on YT that focus on MSFS, VR, and G2 have a RTX 3080 or 3090. But I was beginning to think a 3070 just wouldn't cut it for MSFS. After replacing the old NIS scaler with the new OpenXR companion app, I started with all your settings for NVIDIA control panel, OpenXR Dev Tool, Windows Gaming, Windows Graphics, and OpenXR companion app. Since I have a RTX 3070, not your 3080, I took your MSFS in-game settings and backed them off 1 level (Eg. High --> Medium, Ultra-->High, Medium-->Low) and started there. I am now seeing a consistent frame rate of 37+ and a very smooth cockpit experience for the first time EVER. This is life changing! 🥲
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS Indeed. I've been loving the sim since it was released but using a monitor, not VR. The Reverb G2 and RTX 3070 are my Christmas upgrades. VR is uncanny. I can't wait til DLSS and future improvements in the Sim arrive.
I’m getting 45fps (no motion reprojection) at 88% render scale with a 3090+12900k showing the new hardware really does help. GPU maxed out at 100% when running. The opener toolkit with FSR made a big difference. More of a difference than the NIS scaler from a few weeks ago. Some of my settings for example object level of detail and texture resolution are higher than shown here.
Tried your settings and i am getting the best experience ever in FS2020 with my G2 using an i7 10700 with a 3080 ti and 32 gb of ram at 3200 mhz... thank you!

Holy moly - thanks for the tip on using FSR. I think its actually a much better image quality to NIS which I'd still been pretty happy using. I'm running 90% scaling, 30% sharpening with FSR on my 3080Ti/5600x. Getting 40-45fps most of the time with a lot of my in game settings higher than your own. Flying in New York I'm getting 30-32fps but still very smooth and looking gorgeous. Good times indeed. Cheers Chris!
Can't thank you enough for this COMPLETE VR settings guide. You left nothing out, which I appreciate. I'm running an Intel i9 9900KF (5.0 GHz Turbo) on a Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Ultra motherboard, 32GB RAM and a GeForce RTX 2080ti - very smooth with your settings. Bravo, Sir!
Hi, Chris! Just a quick note of thanks for your latest video tutorial on the new OpenXR Tooklit app and updated settings. I'm about to go for a flight and try the AMD updated openxr toolkit and thought I'd take a quick look at your settings. I'm making a couple adjustments based from your suggestions and have 2 comments for you. 1: regarding the shimmering you mentioned, I found if I turn off sharpening (set to 0) in the VR section of the UserCfg.opt file then I eliminate the shimmering problem, and 2: did you ever notice the white outline around trees when you view trees with water behind them? I found if I turn off raymarched reflections in the settings that it eliminates that issue. Anyway, thanks and good luck.

Having played with this more I’m blown away. I dont know what the behind the scenes code is doing but even the sharpening (at least with FSR) is 10x better than the NIS tool. 85% at 100% sharpening is basically like running at full 100% render scale, but with an additional 20-30FPS to play with. amazing. I get crystal visuals at 40-45FPS on my system now.
My settings were almost the same but then I copied yours and it really made my fps improve quite a lot. It's quite amazing how far FS2020 has come the with fps improvements in their updates and the OpenXR toolkit. Stable 30fps over Tokyo with my G2, NIS at 80% on my humble I9 2080S.

So I was fiddling with my settings and made a few interesting finds. I run W11, Ryzen 5900X, RTX3090 and Reverb G2. Even with the new OpenXR tools, I was getting stutters, regardless of a steady 32FPS. I tried various things (took me a while) but ultimately, resetting the Nvidia control panel parameters to default made the stutters disappear. Not sure what was causing it, but something definitely was. In addition, I enabled HAGS back on and boy oh boy what a result now. Incredible clarity (OpenXR FSR 90/60) and so smooth it feels like I'm going at twice the speed. I was able to bump in game settings to 220 / 120 and terrain, buildings, trees, clouds all on ULTRA. Steady 31fps even in NYC. Hope this might help people with similar specs. I'm going back for more :)
Nice job! Your settings worked great with my RTX 3070 card! A little shimmer but not bad. The new crispness with smooth performance is a super balance! Thanks!
Thanks for these couple or videos on the new Open XR toolkit. I find I am consistently in the 40 fps range and when I changed the SIM VR settings as you suggested, I gained a few more in busy areas to 44fps, and less busy areas hitting the 50fps. I found raising the sharpness above 60% gives similar fps, but images although CAN get sharper under certain conditions, the overall effect was not pleasant. So reverted back to 60% sharpness. Also found above 80% Factor is not pleasant either. I also changed the control keys to Ctrl F5/6/7 since Ctrl 1 opens my Windows menus in VR. Finally I found motion re-projection nauseating for me, so i never turn it on.

Again, we have the same system, yet these exact settings wreak-havoc on mine, causing those darn jaggies in my G2. For me, “clamp” Negative LOD Bias, Vertical sync “fast” and VR Prerendered frames “1” makes the difference between stutters, jaggies and low fps, to a relatively smooth experience. If i lower my settings in game (100/100 etc…), I just get same issues with a blurrier view. It consistently baffles me. Same model car shouldn’t get vastly different performance. And I don’t seem to experience a very noticeable difference with this mod :(
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS Hey Chris, so after so many recommendations and tweaks, things got just horrific, so I reset everything to factory and then set up everything exactly as you suggest here. And its smooth and no jaggies (test flights from Palm Beach Exec around area in Baron). But I know if I head further south to MIA the jaggies will start. I’ve given up on flying anywhere near NYC. Can’t wait until DX12/DLSS utilizing more cores, will free up my cpu.
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS Thx Chris! But as usual, it was great for first 1/2hr, then whamo, horrible judders and jaggies in headset as I approached Phoenix area. After one year of this, Im at a point where I find it very hard to believe that ANYONE with similar specs (or any system) is not getting this issue. Perhaps my cpu, gpu and motherboard are defective and have all coincidentally broke or flawed? Short of that, I QUIT this most ridiculous and broken game by Microsoft. Shame 😢
It's clear from your screen recording at the beginning and of the video that you suffer from the shimmer bug. The autogen buildings in the distance are shimmering like crazy, and in actual VR it must look a whole lot worse still. Why do you video guys never talk about this issue? it was never anywhere near as this bad before SU5. Does it not bother you at all? If I had the platform like you, VRflightsimguy and others I'd make fixing shimmering the number one priority. We need more awareness of this issue so Asobo finally does something about it. Does the shimmering, especially of autogen buildings and trees at mid-distance and in broad daylight, not bother you at all? It used to be so much better. I find it highly immersion breaking and just very ugly to look at.
Like you I've hated the shimmering for a long time and even created a bug fix request on the forum. It's primarily caused by shadows from trees and buildings having a different brightness between the right and left eye. Flying directly over buildings and trees, it looks like a strange stereoscopic effect whilst from a distance trees and buildings will shimmer. You can test it by closing your right eye and a lot of the shadow shimmer will disappear. It's bugged more since about Sim update 5 I think. I initally hated this scaler as it makes the shimmering worse, indeed using Chris' settings I find it really shimmery and ugly. However editing sharpening to 0 in the config file has really improved it. I'm now running FSR 90 and sharpening 25 in the OpenXR toolkit and I have less shimmer than I have ever had before, and can see more detail than before. I'd definitely recommend editing your config file.
@@kevinbrook7033 yeah my postprocessing sharpen is always on 0, it helps a bit but not too much. I agree that the new FSR upscaling in the OXR Toolkit is much better than NIS, but even with a 3080, putting it to 90 reduces my fps below 40,which i dont like, and it still shimmers a lot. Sharpen 25 is good though, agree.
@@kevinbrook7033 are you sure its just shadows causing this? What seems to shimmer worst for me is the rooftops of autogen buildings, where i wouldnt really expect a shadow to be
@@Ben-kw8bo No, there are lots of things causing shimmer, the shadows are just one example. I have to say though since changing my sharpen to 0 in the config file and using the scale with FSR 90 sharpening 25 my experience has improved dramatically. The ugly all over screen smearing has gone, my only shimmer now is on certain buildings/fences/masts which is visible in 2D mode as well and the tree/building shadows which are still present. The rest of the shimmer has gone though and for the first time I'd say it looks really good. I've got a 3090 but I cap my FPS at 32 and it feels very smooth. @@PIEINTHESKYTOURS Thank. One Quick question. If using Ocolus Quest 2 and this new NIS software. I do not have to go through SteamVR. I Can use it directly with Ocolus software and Link cable i assume.
Thanks for your good videos by the way.
Thanks !!!
Thanks so much for this. I have a very similar PC to you with the fastest of everything and I'm now using your settings with the latest Nvidia driver and the same settings in the NISscaler. My FPS is over 50...BUT...I'm getting stuttering that wasn't there before which has really ruined the flying experience. I have tried turning of the NISscaler, going with default settings in VA in the game...and the stuttering persists. Any suggestions?
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS Updated the driver two days ago. What is HAGS? Community folder is full of the same mods I had prior to the latest world update and driver update. I will try removing them and see if that fixes it.
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS so I’ve rolled back the nvidia driver, turned off HAG in the browser and no success. Zero lag in pancake mode, but VR still not as good as it was.
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS so after about an hour of troubleshooting including restore points and emptying the community folder and rolling back the Nvidia driver and then going to the latest version of the Nvidia driver and then moving forward to the latest restore point it turned out to be the VR prop mod in my community folder.
no VR mode in varjo aero hmd untill I switch on "open VR" also do we need to turn off the power to the headet and the base when pc is off? i notice they are staying.
Does the open xr companion tool install with the open xr app or is it a separate install, thanks
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS ok, thanks.
Something must be wrong with my installation as I can't get the pop up box in the sim.
Set Negative LOD Bias to "CLAMP". It reduces shimmering.
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS Nvidia Control Panel. Towards the bottom half. You have it currently set to "Allow". Hope this helps!
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS No problem! Other things that can affect shimmering or "swimming" textures are Sharpening (like in OpenXR) and Anisotropic Filtering (in the Nvidia CP). Shimmering is the one thing that drives me nuts. Lol
Why threaded optimization off?
what is your average FPS with these settings and your 3080?
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS thanks!
Yes it depents on locaion, aircraft, weather ...
I'm asking because I think about to upgrade to a 3080 or 3080TI - at the moment I'm using a 2070S and fly around to 22-27 FPS with small GA aircrafts and not high dense locations.
100 OXR
100 TAA
70 FSR
60% Sharpenes
Reverb G2
I noticed, that a huge impact are the quality of the clouds. At least 4-6 FPS difference betweeen med and high cloud settings
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS what I like to achieve - 100 in OXR, TAA and maybee FSR (if the tool is still needed) to enjoy the full pride of the G2 - I dont need the maximum details everywhere, but 100 all with the 2070Super, results in 3 FPS ;-)
Shame 😢
best settings for msfs and reverb g2
Do I need OpenXR Developer Tools?
I'm not seeing how to display the toolkit menu. Need a little help.
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS thank you. I'd already tried that. I must have installed it wrong. I'll uninstall it then reinstall it.
@@PIEINTHESKYTOURS oh ok. So you only have tolerable shimmering in VR thrn i guess, lm jealous!
I'd say for the first time the sim now runs well enough that I don't feel I need either a headset or GPU upgrade.
