For another 3d game we did at least get though, Driv3r on GBA is also amazing and arguably the best version of it, it’s incredible that they actually managed to recreate a gta style game like that
13:20 ok so in sonic advance 3 the water has this same flicker going on. The GBA used an lcd screen and each frame is burnt into the screen for a little bit, so that flicker was used to create a transparent effect by blending the frames together. I think it’s doing something similar here, but instead of a transparency effect it’s probably a blur or something to make the background look less pixelated. Doesn’t exactly work as intended on modern displays.
23:00 is a classic game development mistake. See, what they're doing is getting horizontal input and vertical input (both go from -1 to 1) and putting them into a vector2, then moving Jimmy by that value. Except the problem is that Vector2(1,1) (diagonal) has a magnitude of 1.41, while Vector2(1,0) (pure horizontal or vertical) has a magnitude of 1. meaning you go 41% faster diagonally. The way to fix that issue is to NORMALIZE the input vector, so that no matter the direction, it is remapped to a magnitude of 1.
OK but then why is this "mistake" the only way to successfully make that jump? If he's supposed to move at normal speed no matter what direction, that means it shouldn't be possible at all.
@@stevethepocket oh I'm not saying they're unaware of it. They probably coded the movement, played around with it, found that you moved faster diagonally, didn't care to fix it, and then bad level designers (if there were any professional level designers at all) decided it was a good idea to require using that movement in the level. You'll find that maaaany games, especially indie games coded by amateurs, have this exact same problem, and many devs don't even realize it exists when play testing it but end up unconsciously working it into their levels.

Hi, Nitro Rad. Thanks for another great video. I didn't see anyone else bring it up, so I thought I'd try and explain why jumping diagonally made you go farther in the GBA version. The most likely explanation is that they didn't normalize whatever vector they're using for the movement and/or jumping. Long story short, with how vectors math works, when you move diagonally, you'll end up moving faster, which is why you want to normalize it so you don't move faster diagonally. As a result, depending on how mean you want to be, they did what could be considered a rookie mistake in game programming.
as someone who cant even play well made platformers seeing you play through the entirety of clunky made one ones to make a fully realized in depth review is truly amazing to me aside from all the great editing and other work thanks for another great video!
6:46 oof, did they really need to have you platform so close to the skybox? Isn't that like asking your actors to stand really close to the matte painting?
The flicker can be found in a handful of other GBA games too. Camelot's Golden Sun 1 and 2 use it on the world map, same with certain areas in Mario Golf/Tennis. The game will rapidly swap between the current and previous frames. The old GBA LCD screen had a lot of motion blur and ghosting that masked the flicker somewhat (though as you mentioned, it didn't hide it perfectly, especially on newer backlit models). The blur would also sort of blend the two frames together to create an illusion of higher resolution. In the case of the Camelot games and Jimmy Neutron, the rotation/scaling effect appears less blocky and jagged. Pseudo anti-aliasing of sorts. This was also used in a different way on the NES Classics series of NES ports to GBA. The GBA's screen was significantly lower res than the NES (GBA is 240x160 and NES was 256x224). This meant that a bunch of lines of pixels would have to be cut. But using flickering, they could rapidly turn entire rows of pixels on and off in alternating patterns. Again, the LCD motion blur somewhat masked the flicker and helped merge the rows of pixels together. The result was a somewhat vertically stretched image, but without really losing any rows of pixels. I believe the Gamecube's GBA Player accessory had a blur effect that could be toggled on or off to simulate this quirk of old LCD displays in the games that relied on it. GBA VC on both 3DS and Wii U also include this setting (and doesn't have an official way to turn it off sadly). Most unofficial GBA emulators also have options or filters to simulate LCD ghosting as well (VisualBoyAdvance and mGBA call it Interframe Blending).
I’ve always loved how your videos are structured like a story almost, if that makes sense. They’re always super fun to watch and this one was no exception. Keep up the great work and I’m looking forward to the rest of the James Isaac Neutron Videos! P.S The new set looks awesome!
23:30 If I had to guess, they probably did this so the player wouldn't get confused on which one is Neutron and which one is Negatron especially on the tiny GBA screen with no back lighting. Anyway great video dude, glad to see you in my notifs again. :)
Goddard actually does have some differences to Jimmy in the GBA version He's shorter so certain flying enemies actually can't hit him unless he's jumping, but his weapon consumes even more energy than Jimmy's making recharge waits take even longer
I just realized going from the movie PC game to this is like going from Battle For Bikini Bottom to the SpongeBob Movie game. Both use the same engine but the follow-up ditches the open-sandbox approach of the first game and replaces it with linear levels.
If you remember back when the Jimmy Neutron movie came out, there was supposed to be a sequel called, “Jimmy Neutron 2: The Search for Carl.” That movie never came out, because Nickelodeon wanted to focus on putting Rugrats Go Wild in theaters instead of Jimmy Neutron 2. However, the plot of the cancelled movie was used for the level in the GBA Jimmy Negatron game where you save Carl on a jelly planet. Given that this game was meant to be a direct sequel to the movie game, I am leading on to believe that Jimmy Neutron vs. Jimmy Negatron is the real, unofficial sequel to the Jimmy Neutron movie. It uses the original rocket design, the original logo, the same game engine and physics as the first movie PC game, and even the plot of the cancelled Search for Carl movie. It’s not official, but it’s what I’m thinking about.

I love Nibroc's renders! Good to see you supporting other artists!
Damn, GBA version shivering and flickering like me on a manic episode.
23:30 If I had to guess, they probably did this so the player wouldn't get confused on which one is Neutron and which one is Negatron especially on the tiny GBA screen with no back lighting.
Anyway great video dude, glad to see you in my notifs again. :)
3:55 No way that was unintentional, you can hear a clear "i" instead of an "e".
Isn't the real *cool boy* the friends we made along the way?
Goddard actually does have some differences to Jimmy in the GBA version
He's shorter so certain flying enemies actually can't hit him unless he's jumping, but his weapon consumes even more energy than Jimmy's making recharge waits take even longer
Super happy to hear you're gonna do a GBA game roundup, I played GBA Attack of the Twonkies growing up and that's incredibly nostalgic
10:29 Okay, I want to see a review of "LOST: Via Domus"
I just realized going from the movie PC game to this is like going from Battle For Bikini Bottom to the SpongeBob Movie game. Both use the same engine but the follow-up ditches the open-sandbox approach of the first game and replaces it with linear levels.
"awe games"
well, that got me.
Man the pc version of this game was my childhood
I'm so hyped to finally see you continuing this series
I feel like they missed a golden opportunity to call the evil one Jimmy Electron.
Damn.....
@@Nic_2751 Lol I love science puns 😂
Nitro Rad I love you and your channel. Thank you for existing.
I can't wait for Jet Fusion. I remember it being decent as a kid lmao
That game was made by Krome, same developer as the Ty games.
@@DoswarePictures really? Must have forgot lol
I was super taken aback by Jimmy having a little emoticon winky face in his dialogue box
“Evangelion Style” exactly what i thought of lol
This game has haunted my life and im so glad to just realize you made the video I hoped to see 10 months ago
Fun fact: the Twonkies gave me a nightmare once and I had a hard time going back to it for a while
excellent.
Love your videos, man! Keep it up!
I did not expect UA-cam to have this game categorized lol
It’s not official, but it’s what I’m thinking about.
god rugrats go wild, what a mess of a movie
