To be fair turning meat on a stick over a fire is an ancient, universal idea...lol. Turks had the idea (I believe) because when I was really young everyone called it "Doner". We westernized it by replacing lamp with types of meat that are more popular in Europe and the U.S.
ah my favorite greek dish is definitely lamb on the spit but I LOVE the taramosalata dip (fish roe). Not to mention the Greek cookies are amazing! (Kourabiedes!)

All of those dishes looked delicious and now want to eat Greek food for dinner. I like these videos and hope you will have checking out other local restaurants. Since I don't live in Germany when you show the different international cuisines I can learn what the dishes are and try someplace else.
I eat the pork kontosouvli from this restaurant at least once per month. Greek restaurants in Germany are usually very good but it can be a bit hard to find one that really competes with the best places in Greece. Grill House 56 does exactly that and really gives you the authentic taste! Love it.
To try either Greek or Turkish food in Germany is like trying to buy quality from Lidl or Aldi. If you want to have the real experience you must go in Greece or Turkey. Or just take your Bratwurst, Brötchen and Sauerkraut.
I love you guys! Full of wonderful personality and opinions I actually care about. And Phil, as an American: "You're welcome!" for an amazing lady like Deana. Stay safe and happy you two!
I live in Düsseldorf and I have to say this restaurant is really good. All the foods there are always fresh and delicious. You have definitely try that if you are in Düsseldorf area.
The secret is in the barbecue's fire coals, which has to be from wood. Not charcoal. In South Africa we braai (barbecue) all the time and we use braai wood. It gives the most delicious flavour and taste to anything you put on that barbecue...meat, fish, bread or veggies.
When I was a student at the University of Mainz (in the 80s), there was a Greek restaurant named 'Samos' that was across the Autobahn from the Uni Studentenwohnheim area. There was a pedestrian bridge that we would take there to a small mall directly on the other side. Freshly baked Greek bread, Taramasalata, and red Demestica wine was my standard order. I loved being able to arrive, be greeted warmly, sit down, and know I would get my favorite within 10 minutes of arrival. It was dead cheap and my friends and I would sit there for hours, ordering more side dishes and wine as we wanted. It was named 'Samos' because the family that owned and ran it were from Samos! And there were so many dogs that came with their owners! For whatever reason, dog owners loved that particular restaurant.
Spanakopita, Lamb Souvlaki, Greek potatoes, Greek roasted chicken, and any Greek dessert! We have an annual Greek Fest in my city and one day we eat quick foods outside under tents as we watch the Greek dancers and then another day, we eat full Greek dinners inside the event hall and take home as many desserts as we can carry!
Loved that video , but as a Greek I'm gonna suggest you to try some typical greek dishes that are not so much popular/known to foreigners ( and do not include much meat too). I'm betting you are going to get a nice surprise by the flavors, smells and the simpilicity of these dishes. It's funny watching people trying pita gyros and moussaka, but I'm pretty sure you'll love some other classic greek dishes even more!
Welcome to my hometown. You need to go to ‚Schweine Janes‘ at Düsseldorf Altstadt. There are doing Pork Streetfood for more than 50 years there. Take the Pork from the ‚Grill Spiess‘ with fries.
We have some great Greek diners here in New England (mainly in Connecticut). They all have HUGE menus. I can't say I have a favorite, but there is a Greek owned deli in my town (Andover Massachusetts) that puts french fries in their gyros. Enjoy!!!
I second the "Galaktoboureko" for desert. The subtitled interviews worked well although if you have a German only audience I wonder if you should subtitle the english for a mixed language video like this. There is a PBS local show that does videos of Washington DC offbeat restaurants and the only thing they add is feeding all the crew the food they were presented, of course you ARE the crew ;-)
Just an FYI, Thessaloniki was voted one of the best places for foodies, we got (possibly) the greatest cuisine in Greece. If you ever return to Greece, I would definitely advise you to visit Thessaloniki :)

Fries in pita gyros are not a sign of quality! Fries are just plain cheaper than meat, so they're often included. By the way, this is not an "invention" from Greece, but originally comes from Greek snack bars in the German Ruhr area! Of course, steelworkers can't spend a lot of money on a quick lunch... So what you can find in Greece these days (mainly in touristy parts of the country) is actually just a re-import, similar to the Berlin style doner that can be found in more and more takeaways all across Turkey...
I haven’t had a Gyros in 2 decades. My town,50 miles from San Francisco,is severely lacking in Food choices and the Gyros she prepared,if we had similar, would cost,at the least,$12+ dollars,& most likely have 30% less meat then she used. Mouth watering Video.
I must try that place next time i'm in Düsseldorf because i've seen everytime i got beer in the kiosk across the street ! Hopefully i will be back in early August!
So great to have you back! The food looks so good. I really wanna eat Gyros now! I have two things that you might be interested is: Since you're in Düsseldorf. There is the "Eko-Haus" on the other side of the Rhein which is a Japanese Temple and Garden. I'm planning to visit it soon and I think you would enjoy it. Also, have you heard of Stoppelmarkt? There is a big Umzug and fireworks and "Viehmarkt" as well and the whole city basically has a celebration for the week and weekend. Its kind of a fifth season. Its in August and it's happening this year for the first time after corona again!

There is the Greek food for Germans and there is the real Greek Food. The Greek food offered in Germany is targeted for Germans. You want to try the real deal, visit Greece.
The north east Mediterranean countries of Greece, Turkey and Lebanon have great food that is influenced be each other but totally distinctive. It’s brave for a Greek restaurant/ to open in Germany given the entrenched Turkish influence but they have the advantage of being able to offer pork.
@@lw7108 Tzatziki in gyros is another mistake that in Athens first happened. I am talking about the classic taste of gyros. Tzatziki is changing the taste to.... tzatziki because of its strong flavor .. That's it. If you try gyros only with the three main ingredients you will see what I mean and that is something totally different
You nailed it all....I am a vegetarian (now) but I can not argue against those choices. (they were all my favorite dishes!) The owners suggested Kontosouvli and Lamp....those are the best choices for me. The coleslaw salad with olive oil and lemon.....superior to that mayo bs as you said! Eggplant salad with garlic, smoked paprika, olive oil ...amazing!!! Suggestions for future episodes A great food but it would be difficult to find in Germany (even in Greece you will have a hard time finding in the 'beaten path") is "Provatina kontosouvli". Fully grown female lamp on a long stick with herbs)! My favorite as vegetarian today is "giaurtlu with vegetables"(fried eggplants, zucchini and potatoes with Greek yogurt sauce) and stuffed pumpkin flowers with rice (like dolmades).
Greek here. All these are typical Greek dishes that we use to eat in my country too. But the truth is the Greeks of diaspora show the more fatty and unhealthy part of Greek cuisine. Yes it's delicious and flavorful but we have plenty of dishes which are vegetarian. Also we consume many vegetables (raw, fried, baked and boiked)and seafood (octopus, calamari, mussels, shrimps, all kinds of edible fishes and more). Maybe we eat more pasta than Italians(we have our traditional dishes with pasta). Our savory and sweet pastries are to die for. Countless pies, stews, soups, deeps, roasts, salads and not only the famous greek salad or farmers/villagers salad. Every town has its specific speciality and every yiayia(grandma)has its own recipe. Greek cuisine is exceptional and you are more than welcome to discover every part of it.
Maybe we should migrate to Germany for a good and cheap souvlaki. The σουβλατζίδικο in my neighborhood (not somewhere downtown) charges €3 a single pitogyro with some traces of τζατζίκι without potatoes (and calls it a reasonable price). Given the fact I don't see cats around, I'm very worried! When I first set my foot in Greece and became a pork believer you could buy a double pitogyro for 150 drachmas (that was 40 years ago of course).
Haven't been to Düsseldorf for a while, but if you are in this area and have a bit of time to visit the surrounding ... You need to try the Currywurst in Bochum (app. 40km away from DD) at the "Bratwursthaus". Nice people there and the Currywurst might be the best you'll ever get in your life. The "Bratwursthaus", which was founded back in 1952, is the inventer of the Currywurst. It's really worth a trip! Check it out on Wikipedia, youtube, etc.
Thanks for this. I imagine since you've been to Greece, you are reliable judges of the food. I've made Souvlaki and Biftikia a few times because I have an annoyingly large mint plant and both dishes require mint. I love the contrasts of mint and feta and garlic and lemon. I wonder if Greek food is unique for this combo of flavors. Greek food is something I'd never eat in America, thanks to Germany having so many good Greek places. I guess they didn't give you an ouzo after, that's sad. Have you seen the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding? It's great: )
Hey guys! I'm Greek and I live in munich for the last 8 years. I have to say that I'm so disspointed for the Greek food around here. The owners adjusting the Greek food to the Germans taste which as Greek I found it sad and pity. This guy in Düsseldorf that you show us seems to keep the Greek flavor and the techniques of original Greek style Street food. 👌
Totally true, there is this cliché in Germany that Greek food is just a bunch of meat, Metaxa Sause and Tzatziki and that Greek restaurants must have God Names and look like a piece of the ruins of the Parthenon.
Our local greek restaurant is very nice too. Owned by a family, leaded by their mom. She is very strict ^^" But the food.... 🤤 I love bifteki and lamb and their chicken dishes are great too. And the Metaxa sauce! OMG! I love that stuff xD If, after a great meal, there is still space in my belly I love that amazing dessert, which name I always forget. It's a puff pastry filled with vanilla cream. Great, I'm hungry now. 😭
Everything looks good, yummy and tasty BUT, the pita-gyros of my youth had meat, tzatziki, tomatoes, onions and parsley and NOT potatoes like modern day Greeks like to put in. Have no idea who thought of it but they started doing it back in the 1990s and I don't like it. Potatoes do not belong in the pita-gyros wrap but on a separate plate next to it. Other than that, everything else looked good!
The restaurant and food looks great. Will give it a try when passing by. 🙂 If you like Sushi and a good view over Dusseldorf the restaurant in the Rheinturm (Rhine tower) might be something for you.

now i get really hungry!!Ich habe hunger!!!!!nice video guys!!
Tzatziki is katastrophic in gyros, the classic gyros is :meat, onion, tomato, if you wish little mustard
What's so bad about Tz.?
@@lw7108 Tzatziki in gyros is another mistake that in Athens first happened. I am talking about the classic taste of gyros. Tzatziki is changing the taste to.... tzatziki because of its strong flavor .. That's it. If you try gyros only with the three main ingredients you will see what I mean and that is something totally different

I am from Greece
Hi!!
Hii
You nailed it all....I am a vegetarian (now) but I can not argue against those choices. (they were all my favorite dishes!)
The owners suggested Kontosouvli and Lamp....those are the best choices for me.
The coleslaw salad with olive oil and lemon.....superior to that mayo bs as you said!
Eggplant salad with garlic, smoked paprika, olive oil ...amazing!!!
Suggestions for future episodes
A great food but it would be difficult to find in Germany (even in Greece you will have a hard time finding in the 'beaten path") is "Provatina kontosouvli". Fully grown female lamp on a long stick with herbs)!
My favorite as vegetarian today is "giaurtlu with vegetables"(fried eggplants, zucchini and potatoes with Greek yogurt sauce) and stuffed pumpkin flowers with rice (like dolmades).
Try the Greek Saganaki cheese. They briefly light it a flame at your table. Very yummy. I grew up in Astoria Queens NYC. Many Greeks!
Lot's of Greek restaurants in Detroit! OOOpaaaa! But one of the best I've ever been to is in Baguio, Philippines! Lemon and Olives! Look it up!
Watching These UA-cam Videos, Is Like Watching A Modern Day Soap Opera 😎‼️
It's great: )
Mmmmmm
It All looks good ❤
Love all your content, but you guys really shine when you're doing food videos.
So true! I was also utterly shocked when gyros was offered together with calamari as a single plate with Metaxa-liqor based sauce in it. Yuck!
The food looked amazing!❤️
Our local greek restaurant is very nice too. Owned by a family, leaded by their mom. She is very strict ^^"
But the food.... 🤤 I love bifteki and lamb and their chicken dishes are great too. And the Metaxa sauce! OMG! I love that stuff xD
If, after a great meal, there is still space in my belly I love that amazing dessert, which name I always forget. It's a puff pastry filled with vanilla cream.
Great, I'm hungry now. 😭
Galaktoboureko is the name of dessert that you are referring
I am from greece and gyros and souvlaki is the best love u guys
Greek food in Germany is over the top Amazing!!!!
I love Greek food, especially Moussaka or Pastitsio.
We love Moussaka!! We still need to try Pastitsio!!
@@DeanaandPhil Does the Donner roughly correspond to shawarma.

Greek food is so good! The greek restaurant we have here is probably my favorite restaurant period.
Oh woww the souflaki look so good!
I am from Greece γεια σας
The restaurant and food looks great. Will give it a try when passing by. 🙂
If you like Sushi and a good view over Dusseldorf the restaurant in the Rheinturm (Rhine tower) might be something for you.
Iam from Thessaloniki Greece and for sure the best pita gyros is in my town..one sandwich is one kilo and the cost is 3euro..
1kilo means 3$
Well, Greek gyros and Turkish döner to me are rather similar, so would a gyros be a good substitute for a döner?
I’m an a 54 year old American woman living in Alaska. I met a wonderful German man from Northern Germany nine months ago. (Online) We speak several times daily despite the time difference. He is visiting me in September for three weeks. Your videos are invaluable to me that warn me of cultural differences. From your videos I’m also able to educate him. He’s from Hamburg. I’m originally from Anchorage but now in Sitka Alaska. When he comes here we will do much fishing and hunting. Thank you guys for sharing your lives. You guys are wonderful! 😀 I will discuss this with him but I’m thinking to start our own UA-cam channel. He’s older than me, he’s very private but I believe I can convince him. 😜
Wish you all the best! Try to make this Greek recipe, you will love this food! ua-cam.com/video/x5aDXUUiRFQ/v-deo.html
