I swear in this Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña have some of the most realistic and deeply felt chemistry I've seen in recent films. David Ayer knew what he was doing with this one, man. Way better than a film like this has any right to be.

When a LEO is a LODD (line of duty death), they will call out their number on the radio, usually on the day of the funeral at the end of their normal shift, and once there’s no answer, the dispatcher will announce an “End of Watch” with the date and time.

I definitely agree that the job isn’t for everyone, and I’m certainly not trying to say that the people that can’t, or won’t, do the job are somehow “lesser” than those of us that do the job longer, I’m just saying that it’s a very difficult job to do.

As a retired police officer the reality of a 10-78 or 10-0 call response time can depend on several factors. How large the police force is or not knowing the last location of the officers. Today it’s easier because all police cars and police radios have GPS.
Unfortunately I’ve been to several funerals like this and they stay with you long after you retire.

First thing, the 4 symbol that Jake was throwing up means all clear, or safe.

    • @derricksevernak1540

@@OllieBlazin He’s correct. It’s called a Code 4. Hence the 4 fingers. He’s also correct that all officers will respond to an officer down. Even other jurisdictions will respond to the call as well. As far as the movie yes it’s a little bit unrealistic. But I’ve been on duty twice in my career when an officer down call made its way over the radio and on one of those calls we couldn’t locate the officer because he had ran so far from where his last call was and there was no updated location. It happens. This was 1999 so things were different then as far as communications.

One of the most genuine cop movies ever made. This is a reality for a lot of members of law enforcement in America (particularly in troubled areas) There is a lot of stigma around American police, but when I tell you, it’s literally just a few bad apples that ruin the reputation of the many.

    • @jon8004
      @jon8004 3 місяці тому +4

Errr, this movie is seriously exaggerated. That's like saying "Assault on Precinct 13" captures what it's like to be a cop. It's definitely a dangerous job, and there are occasional gunfights, but the idea that a drug cartel is going to go to war with a U.S. metropolitan police force like this is, for now, ridiculous. This sort of carnage isn't even in the cartel's best interest. Ambushing and murdering two officers like this would trigger a heavy city, state and federal response. It simply wouldn't be worth it.

Err clearly you weren't paying attention. It absolutely was not the carteI that "went to war" with the police. If you had actually been paying attention instead of whining about realism in a movie, you would have noticed that Zavala and Taylor were basically unknowingly moving in on the carteI's activity, which is why they were now on their radar. They had a definite motive to want to take them out. The reason I say it wasn't the carteI is because they actually hired that street gang to do the work for them, because as you said, they don't want that heat. Pay attention to the conversation they have during that scene with the green footage when the guy tells them "not to make a mess".

David Ayer is one of my favorite directors because of his willingness to not shy away from the mundane or harshness of reality. I'm so glad when people watch this one, because he really did his thing with End of Watch, and the main duo were perfectly cast. I also loved how attached y'all got to the guys, because that's really how bonded they are.

You can tell Hannah is such a deeply empathic person. Her narration of what’s to come and just knowing plot twists is innate with every single film she watches. i used to work in prison. i remember in training, we watched videos of the worst case scenarios that really happened. there's an incident with a mentally ill man that just snapped and attacked one of the COs so brutally, just beating then stomping on his head till you can see the plasma from his brain leak out of his ear. his partner was so shocked and scared, she froze on the spot.
the guy survived, but obviously retired after that. the female CO stayed for a few more years but since then, no one wants to ever work with her.

I used to work in Children Services at a Superior Court in SoCal. I've seen worse done to kids, unfortunately. You have to have thick skin and get over PTSD to work in that field. I love how in the end of this movie, you are dealing with heavy stuff like the officer's death, but then they cut to the scene of them shooting the s from earlier that day. Once you see and experience tough things, you learn to get over things very quickly and try to focus on the light and have a sense of humor. You try to remember good people you know. I used to be a very emotional person, but I can handle anything now.
I think you would love the show Southland. I used to date a guy in South Central. He was hard of hearing, so he could live anywhere. It was too loud for me to live there, but I never minded going over there. People are super friendly there. Neighbors talk to each other. I personally liked it. And it was during covid so not as many people on the streets (so I probably would like it less now). Gas was cheaper there than other parts of LA, anyhow too. And better seasoned and cheaper food too. Best chicken around... mmm.
I've never been a Officer or Deputy, but my favorite show about Cities or the PD is Southland. It's very realistic to me. I used to work in Downtown LA for the City. I love that show. Acting is amazing too.
Finding a good partner and having great communication skills makes life all worth while. Once you have someone that you trust and that has your back, you have everything.

My best friends brother is a cop, and I worry about him every day. He once showed bodycam footage of him chasing down an armed robbery suspect, and then, hours later, he's eating dinner with my best friend, and I'm like how the hell do you do this all day every day and not lose it. All that you see and do. This movie really puts that in perspective that these men and women are living two lives and are always on the verge of life and death. Ash is right, in my city, there have been some very good cops killed on basic traffic stops---tail light out, and they get shot to death over that. There are some awful cops out there, that should be dealt with and taken out of the job, but majority are like these two--just doing their duty and trying to protect people, and for that, they will always have my utmost respect.

The ending reminded me of a story told by a WWII vet about the Battle of Iwo Jima. He spoke about two inseparable friends in their company. You always saw them together, never saw one without the other nearby. During the battle, both were hit about 25 feet from each other. The company retreated, leaving all who were presumed KIA, which included the two friends. When they returned sometime later, they found that one of the friends crawled the 25ft to his dead buddy and died with his head on his chest.
Ask any LEO of Vet - You do what you do for the man next to you.
