I have a relative recently diagnosed with celiac and on the days they feel bad it really knocks them off their feet. So for him to play and be number 3 with how badly he was probably feeling is pretty amazing.
@Tom R it's still mind-boggling to me how no doctor ever made an allergy test with novak.. whenever i went to my physician and complained about certain issues, he always had that on his list. just testing novaks lung function would've implied there are some issues, i mean he was at the MD all the time, it's crazey.
@@slXD100 food allergies can't be diagnosed with medical tests. technology isn't there yet. way too many false positives and false negatives with the tests that are out there. basically a waste of time. if you think you have a problem, you have to just slowly eliminate one food at a time. it's a pain in the ass, i should know....went through all that myself. wheat,eggs,soy, chocolate. ugh.
Novak is one of the most realistic and honest people that you see on TV. He doesn't pretend that he is something he is not and shows that we are human beings who have different emotions and make mistakes. He doesn't speak or do something he doesn't think or agree with just to get the likes of the media and people. I have so much respect and appreciation for him both on and off court.

As a long time tennis fan, I clearly remember the transition in Djokovic from a top contender to "plain invincible". I just couldn't believe that a player could transition so suddenly in that short space of time. That's when he used to talk about his new gluten-free diet. Djokovic is every bit as good as any other player in the GOAT conversation for these reasons: 1) He’s held all 4 majors at the same time, something neither Fed or Rafa has done, 2) He’s the only person who’s won all 9 ATP Masters 1000 events, and he’s done it twice, 3) As I write this he has a winning record against both Fed and Nadal. All he needs now is most career majors and an Olympic gold medal 🥇
I know, I think a lot of tennis fans (myself included) don't necessarily like to admit that Djokovic is pretty much the GOAT because we enjoy Federer or Nadal's exciting play style, but when you look at the stats, Djokovic is almost the indisputable GOAT. Ahhh.. that part about mental game. I love how it shatters the old philosophy of finding inner peace. Probably the best message in terms of acceptance. Rather than be swallowed up, he lets it happen and lets it finish its run without adding to it. Overall another thing to add to the debunking of a lot of old advice. Nadal has contributed quite a lot too. Doubts are normal. Enjoy the suffering. He uses practice to learn rather than boring old practice makes perfect crap. My favorite that the Big 3 reinforce? Nerves are a part and how they want to be nervous. Screw that silly advice on "Don't be nervous." That advice can just go in the trash can.

I would still say that Nadal was the one blown off the court by Djokovic that year. Federer was always competitive against him until 2016. He beat him in RG and had MP in US. Even in 2018-2019, there were some nailbiters. Nadal on the other hand hasn't taken a single set in HC since 2013 against Novak and never beaten him on grass as well I think. Clay is the reason that the h2h is still looking balanced.

Mental game is huge, but you left out his strategical implementation too. He changed his forehand to a deep heavy topspin shot to abide to the newer slower courts. This type of shot complemented his improved fitness. The early 2010s had the slowest courts we’ve ever seen, so grinders really had their peak.

Great video, I remember the exact moment I became a Djokovic fan. 2006 Roland Garros QF when he retired 2 sets down against Nadal. The cocky bastard with the Vamos Nole on his shoes won me over. I told my friend he would be a future champion, he guaranteed that would never happen (he was a massive Nadal fan). It was a glorious time rubbing Novak's success for the past decade into his face. Also, people point out his 2011 season, but for me, 2015 into 2016 was the greatest thing I have ever witnessed in sporting history.

I don't know. They look pretty strong to me. Thiem especially recently. Medvedev is definitely getting stronger, although he has not as many encounters against Federer. Give them time. They have made some improvements. Especially mentally.
Thiem has been beating the big three consistently for the past couple of years and Medvedev beat both Nadal and Djokovic at the season finals last year. It's going to be interesting to see what happens this year.

The difference is the others accept the situation and respect the opponent and take it to end, even if they can barely move. Its a lack of respect towards your opponent to retire, its a lack of respect towards the crowd and the fans watching on tv, even amateurs that plays club level tennis know this. The inflammation during exertion is as debilitating as a full body cramp, with no way out of it, and you have to stop moving. It’s like a vise squeezing your lungs shut. Once Novak was diagnosed in 2010 and eliminated the sources of the inflammation, he went from retiring from matches to the extraordinary record wins in 2011.

I think the biggest improvement in Djokovic was mental. Tennis is such a psychological sport and so many brilliant tennis players end up being somewhat "eccentric". Chris evert for example talked at length recently about how much it damaged her. Martina Navratilova was noted for the offbeat approach she had to tennis in the 80s. In Djokovic's case, his diet may have had an impact, but i think what was more important is that he simply decided that he wasn't going to choke any more. The hoopla about his diet etc was to a large extent a way for him not to admit that beforehand, he had been mentally weak

You can’t pretend you’re “hungry”; it’s either there or not there. Federer is so talented as a tennis player, he could ride the wave of his talents for a long time cause he does not over-exert himself to win games; and he does it in style, that’s why he’s so loved by the fans. Unfortunately, when younger, hungry champions like Nadal and Djokovic, eager to write their legacies, show up, “talent” is not enough to beat them. You need to match them with “hunger” and “greed” for greatness, which Federer had already accomplished, and with style. Nadal and Djokovic will “eat dirt” to win a point; not Federer. If Federer can’t beat you “Federer-style”, ballet dancing all around the court, he doesn’t mind losing cause his legacy is already written and his “hunger” for success is already dead. Federer, by winning 20 grand slam titles, gave Nadal n Djokovic the standard and the heights to go at for greatness. If Federer came after Nadal n Djokovic, with the hunger of a young champion seeking greatness, with that kind of tennis talent, it would have been a completely different story cause he would have the “greed” and mental strength to back-up his tennis talent. Most young tennis players would would want to be like Federer cause he has variety n style in his game and could beat you in a lot of different ways. This is my argument for why djokovic is the greatest player of all time. He won all his grand slams while in the same era as two other players who are also argued to as well be potential GOATs. People think that the other two are better just because they have more grand slams. Federer won half of his grand slams before nadal even came on the scene and nadal’s only competition during most of his wins was Federer himself. Imagine for a second if either Federer or nadal never existed or were in another era, could you imagine how many grand slams Nole would have? (I feel like some nadal fans are gonna come after me, I just wanna add that IMO the highest level of tennis in existence is Nadal on the clay)
I think even Djokovic himself will admit that he would never be as great or won as much if not by Federer and Nadal, Novak always claim they were the ones that made him become so great because Djokovic had to dig really deep to find a way to improve himself and surpass their level.

1) He’s held all 4 majors at the same time, something neither Fed or Rafa has done,

3) As I write this he has a winning record against both Fed and Nadal.
All he needs now is most career majors and an Olympic gold medal 🥇
I know, I think a lot of tennis fans (myself included) don't necessarily like to admit that Djokovic is pretty much the GOAT because we enjoy Federer or Nadal's exciting play style, but when you look at the stats, Djokovic is almost the indisputable GOAT. Ahhh.. that part about mental game. I love how it shatters the old philosophy of finding inner peace. Probably the best message in terms of acceptance. Rather than be swallowed up, he lets it happen and lets it finish its run without adding to it.
Overall another thing to add to the debunking of a lot of old advice. Nadal has contributed quite a lot too. Doubts are normal. Enjoy the suffering. He uses practice to learn rather than boring old practice makes perfect crap.
My favorite that the Big 3 reinforce? Nerves are a part and how they want to be nervous. Screw that silly advice on "Don't be nervous." That advice can just go in the trash can.

I still remember when I was like in 4th, the answer to 'Who won (literally any tennis related trophy)?' all of a sudden became Novak Djokovic. I've been a huge fan ever since
Talk about a train that never stopped. This man single-handedly destroyed the dominance of 2 of the greatest players of all time by simply *NOT MISSING* for an entire year.
Strongest mentally of all time.
I would still say that Nadal was the one blown off the court by Djokovic that year. Federer was always competitive against him until 2016. He beat him in RG and had MP in US. Even in 2018-2019, there were some nailbiters. Nadal on the other hand hasn't taken a single set in HC since 2013 against Novak and never beaten him on grass as well I think. Clay is the reason that the h2h is still looking balanced.
Just to add some context, Djokovic was no.3 for a few years in the late 2000s and was seen as a one slam wonder.
He was often regarded as someone who would never be on par with Federer and Nadal (even Murray was considered to have a better career than him at the time).

Mental game is huge, but you left out his strategical implementation too. He changed his forehand to a deep heavy topspin shot to abide to the newer slower courts. This type of shot complemented his improved fitness. The early 2010s had the slowest courts we’ve ever seen, so grinders really had their peak.

Great video, I remember the exact moment I became a Djokovic fan. 2006 Roland Garros QF when he retired 2 sets down against Nadal. The cocky bastard with the Vamos Nole on his shoes won me over. I told my friend he would be a future champion, he guaranteed that would never happen (he was a massive Nadal fan).
It was a glorious time rubbing Novak's success for the past decade into his face.
Also, people point out his 2011 season, but for me, 2015 into 2016 was the greatest thing I have ever witnessed in sporting history.

I don't know. They look pretty strong to me. Thiem especially recently. Medvedev is definitely getting stronger, although he has not as many encounters against Federer.
Give them time. They have made some improvements. Especially mentally.
Thiem has been beating the big three consistently for the past couple of years and Medvedev beat both Nadal and Djokovic at the season finals last year. It's going to be interesting to see what happens this year.

Please Djokovic retired from a bunch of different reasons, do you think he is the only tennis player that feels bad on the court? The difference is the others accept the situation and respect the opponent and take it to end, even if they can barely move. Its a lack of respect towards your opponent to retire, its a lack of respect towards the crowd and the fans watching on tv, even amateurs that plays club level tennis know this. Unless you REALLY cant play, which has never been the case with Djokovic.

The inflammation during exertion is as debilitating as a full body cramp, with no way out of it, and you have to stop moving. It’s like a vise squeezing your lungs shut. Once Novak was diagnosed in 2010 and eliminated the sources of the inflammation, he went from retiring from matches to the extraordinary record wins in 2011.

It's also interesting that Novak is, by the end of the March, literally bound to surpass Federer in the number of weeks as #1 player on ATP list! Thus it's another record in waiting. Honestly between him, Nadal and Federer, I cannot see any young player achieving their level of greatness in at least the next couple of years, except of course all of them suddenly have some physical or mental breakdowns!

I think the biggest improvement in Djokovic was mental. Tennis is such a psychological sport and so many brilliant tennis players end up being somewhat "eccentric". Chris evert for example talked at length recently about how much it damaged her. Martina Navratilova was noted for the offbeat approach she had to tennis in the 80s. In Djokovic's case, his diet may have had an impact, but i think what was more important is that he simply decided that he wasn't going to choke any more. The hoopla about his diet etc was to a large extent a way for him not to admit that beforehand, he had been mentally weak

Federer is so talented as a tennis player, he could ride the wave of his talents for a long time cause he does not over-exert himself to win games; and he does it in style, that’s why he’s so loved by the fans. Unfortunately, when younger, hungry champions like Nadal and Djokovic, eager to write their legacies, show up, “talent” is not enough to beat them. You need to match them with “hunger” and “greed” for greatness, which Federer had already accomplished, and with style. Nadal and Djokovic will “eat dirt” to win a point; not Federer. If Federer can’t beat you “Federer-style”, ballet dancing all around the court, he doesn’t mind losing cause his legacy is already written and his “hunger” for success is already dead. Federer, by winning 20 grand slam titles, gave Nadal n Djokovic the standard and the heights to go at for greatness. If Federer came after Nadal n Djokovic, with the hunger of a young champion seeking greatness, with that kind of tennis talent, it would have been a completely different story cause he would have the “greed” and mental strength to back-up his tennis talent. Most young tennis players would would want to be like Federer cause he has variety n style in his game and could beat you in a lot of different ways. Nadal n Djokovic is all about fight which straddles on their hunger to pass the standards that Federer has set. Federer, since the last 10 yrs or so, was/is playing because he loves to play tennis and it shows when he’s playing.

This is my argument for why djokovic is the greatest player of all time. He won all his grand slams while in the same era as two other players who are also argued to as well be potential GOATs. People think that the other two are better just because they have more grand slams. Federer won half of his grand slams before nadal even came on the scene and nadal’s only competition during most of his wins was Federer himself. Imagine for a second if either Federer or nadal never existed or were in another era, could you imagine how many grand slams Nole would have?
