Here’s an update on Jack, the Whittaker’s dog that was injured. Larry took Jack to a veterinarian in Beckley where his leg was amputated. The vet gave Jack antibiotics and pain medication. Larry tells me that Jack is now running around and happy like nothing ever happened.

Thank U from the depths of my heart for the update!!
It was hard to watch that poor dog and I’m not, absolutely NOT, faulting these poor people. They r heroically scraping by & barely takin care of themselves… but seeing the dog injured has haunted me almost as much as the Whitakers has haunted my soul!
Ur UA-cam channel often haunts me for days, weeks, or months after watching a video.
This family is so interesting , yet also hauntingly tragic.
Genuinely deeply moving is the best way I can describe, watching ur videos of them.
However, I’m still not expressing it fully … with just those words!
What u have been called to do , so are doing, is truly EPIC!

I'm a speech-language pathologist :) Ray was saying "Chicken" and pointing when going in the fridge and freezer with Mark. Should look into an AAC device for him - visuals and augmentative communication could change his life - if he wanted it! Amazing to see the progress with the family from the first video - bless you Mark!

As the Humane Society Director for Raleigh County, we got an enormous amount of calls regarding the condition of the dog in the video. I just wanted to let everyone know that the dog is currently receiving vet care and will require amputation at the shoulder. For those concerned about the care of the animals, I can tell you that these folks care for their animals as well or better than most folks do, just were not equipped to deal with this particular issue. I personally have visited twice in the last week to make sure that the dog received treatment and can assure everyone that all of the other animals in the house are in great shape. We regularly provide them with pet food and will be keeping in touch with them to make sure that they don't end up in this situation again. I do know that Mr Laita has given them some money toward the dog's care and I have spoken with the vet personally because I wanted to make sure that Ray was able to get his dog back. Surgery is scheduled for today, as I understand it after speaking with family members and the vet. So many people have strong opinions on all of this, but I really want everyone to know that these folks really are beautiful human beings who love their animals and that we will be working with them to provide spay and neuter services as well as any future care their animals may need.

About 50 years ago there were these 3 red shacks out on the main road in Letcher county Kentucky where my family is from. It's always been poor there even when coal was at its peak. Anyway these 3 shacks stood out due to the litter out front and obvious condition of the buildings. A news reporter from some big city come down and tried to do a story on poverty and basically put the people there down. The owner of these shacks showed up with a shotgun and told them to leave. With their arrogant attitude they stood their ground and claimed immunity because they were press. They also died that day, on that very spot. Had they approached the situation with humility and respect no doubt they would have lived that day.

You’ve given the invisible and otherwise voiceless, recognition. You’ve given them a voice, and a place in the world to be accepted without prejudice. Helped them with improving their home, now friends who genuinely seem to care. Lord knows you’ve made me a fan of people that I would have normally raised an eyebrow too. Taught me how to check my own biases and to not judge someone simply because of circumstances that are of no fault of their own. I think all of fans of WUB, are finding empathy and love for people who seemed very isolated before. I see a lot of personal growth from the very first video. Whole-heartedly agree. My son is autistic and non-verbal. We now communicate with him well, but his eyes would say it all. Ray knows what’s going on around him, and he does get frustrated when he can’t get his word across. I’ve seen it time and time again in my son, and I see it in Ray.
Edited to add: my son used a program on an iPad called ProLoQuo2Go. It had pictures you could customize as well as an area where they can type words/sentences and the program reads it for them, simulating their voice. Similar to a less high tech version of how Stephen Hawking communicated.
