It was a corner jump shot that was was almost impossible to block. Yet, Ben was able to get a finger on it. I knew then he was different.
Ben was the best defensive center I've ever seen play. Multi skills on def Elite on ball stealer and one on one defender. At 6'8 he could block shots on and off ball. Most of the greatest shot blockers don't tend to block there own man but Ben had the physical abilities to do both. Elite physicality on the block against elite inside scorers in a time where most 4-5 players had more mid to post up skill and size today. As a rebounder outside of Dennis rodman I've never seen a guy better rebounding. As well ppl talk about clutch but there's clutch rebounders stealers defenders assist men. Not just scorers he was the type of guy who got that rebound you need to win or gain momentum not just like say a A. Drummond who really doesn't have a winning impact on games. I'd say he was way better than Mutumbo or Dwight Howard on defense . Mutumbo was a great shot blockers but wasn't an actual on ball defender. His defense vs the Lakers in phi and on the nets was not affected on ball like wallace

Ben Wallace was a 1-man press. I've seen him blitz guards so hard they'd back up to the halfcourt line, then he'd somehow get back to help in the post and collect the rebound. And he would do that for an entire game! Too strong for most and too quick for the rest, what really set him apart was his energy and focus. More skilled players just wore out competing against him for 48 minutes.
