I’ve been watching these videos for a while, and it would appear that Qantas is the only premium economy to be a business minus class, where the other airlines do an economy plus version. Makes me feel incredibly lucky to have experienced it.
Premium Economy on Qantas looks like a good product. Little things like linen napkins and proper glassware make a difference in my opinion. Takes me back to the early days of flying. Thanks for sharing.
I thought it was great When I flew in premium economy on their A380 from London to Sydney back in 2017. The flight attendents were so nice and all the other things was also great.
I've done those transpacific flights from LAX or SFO to Australia and New Zealand several times. To Australia, it's been on United in economy. I pick an aisle seat and just deal with it. I manage. Not too horrible. It's possible to get some sleep in economy if you try. I think Melbourne is a nicer city than Sydney. Sydney may have more to do, but how the CBD is near the Yarra River in Melbourne, with all the restaurants along the river walk, makes it nice.
I really want to spend more time in Australia I think. This was my second trip there, and both times were very short visits. Next time I’m going to stay longer and have a better look around!
I'm leaving for Sydney 2/21/19. Will be the longest flight so far for me. I'll be on United as well. Not sure I can justify upgrading to premium economy. I'ts an extra 200 dollars each way.
@@craig9843 Don't bother paying for United Premium Economy. It's just a few inches of extra legroom, that you'll never notice. Several years ago I flew from L.A. to Copenhagen. I was in United "Economy Minus" and I had all three seats to myself. The back half of economy was full of empty seats where I was. Economy Plus was packed with passengers, most who probably got free upgrades for their United Mileage Plus status. Being upgraded was a downgrade for all of them.
@@micarsenijevic2313 I think what he is trying to say is that there a very often flights travelling between Melbourne and Sydney, which is true as they are the 2 largest cities in the country.

Yes, when I would fly to London, England to see family and friends and I would sit in Economy Class out of Newark, New Jersey on a 777-200 and 300s , I would always sit in front of Economy Class on A&B side all the time. Our flights were never full coming out of Newark so it is always nice to have those seats by myself... And yes coming from Chicago's O'Hare Airport I would find the United Red Carpet Lounge all the time...
That premium economy seat looks better than most business class seats I've walked by on my way back to steerage. The 787 is a beautiful plane (flew EWR to LAX in early 2021) but my brain still can't accept that a flight to Australia is not on a 747 or A380. 😁
More info - what were the seats like comfort wise? Was there noticeably more recline than economy? Did you get any or try to get any sleep? Are there overhead air vents? What was the IFE like? Thanks, yeah, this was an incredibly comfortable flight! I think the only reason it was so lightly loaded was the fact that it was delayed so bad - I suppose other passengers moved to other flights. 🤷🏼♂️
Bulkhead seats help a fair a bit! No Vegemite but you did get a Fantail...another Australian icon! Excellent review and well done to Qantas on their product!
I travelled dozens of time on the SYD - LAX or SYD - SFO route. Using a variety of carriers I have been in all 3 classes & I still follow the same rules - bring ear plugs, bring eye shades, bring a bottle of water onboard. I always take an aisle seat as I am over 6' 1" tall so the ease to access the aisle is important when in economy / business class. I travelled for holidays & then the Y2K projects so experienced a few carriers. For some reason the American travellers need to congregate around the toilets & shout out to each other, hence why I take the ear plugs & eye shades. Also that bottle of water I fill up at the airport is with me WHEN I want a drink & not when I am able to be served. Air NZ were excellent in all 3 classes but QANTAS is still my regular. Have yet to try United Airlines to the USA but have flown with them domestically.
Don’t bother flying United Airlines, or even worse, American Airlines. Somehow, AA naturally managed to shoe horn a tenth seat in every row in Economy, for a cabin width designed originally for nine-abreast. It’s cramped back there, and passengers and flight attendants alike start behaving like crazed rats trapped in a maze. It’s deplorable. Flying a US flag carrier on routes to Australasia will be a real come down, after QANTAS, Virgin Australia , or Air New Zealand. US carriers really don’t have “it” anymore, and its inflight employees really don’t care.
Kind of shocked there's no amenity kit in premium economy. I like them for the container (often reusable) and the eye mask. Wow, you had to connect to Sydney?! Not fun. I haven't been on Qantas for years, before there were non-stops west coast to Australia. I used to spend the night in a Honolulu airport hotel, really helped with jet lag back in the 707 days. My first 747 flight was on Qantas, Sydney-Perth-Mauritius-Johannesburg in 1977. Such memories.
I'll be so glad when Qantas puts these premium economy seats in the A380 during the upgrades this year. We usually fly DFW-Sydney every other year and the current PE seats in those planes are almost ten years old and falling apart (still better than regular economy). These new seats look fantastic! FYI, while San Fran to Melbourne is a shorter flight than LAX-Melbourne that means you get fewer Qantas frequent flyer points.
Oooooh, good point about the...points (lol). I didn’t think about it since this was an award ticket, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind when paying for a seat with $$. 👍🏻
In late 2017, I flew QF in Premium Economy from LAX to BNE - that’s “Bris-bin,” to us yanks. I felt that the service level was exceptional. Further, we had the added treat of flying QF’s Boeing 747-400ER for what was probably one of the last times. The BNE - LAX route is now flown by a Boeing 787-9 or 787-10. QANTAS have always been great like that, and I’ve been flying them since the 70s when their fleet was made up largely of Boeing 707s and Boeing 747 - 200s. Wow, I’m old.
Wow what a brilliant video! Never been to the States but by watching trip reports even the F&B in premium economy looks better than first class in US domestic!
Great trip report. Straight-forward and all points are clearly presented. But I'm kind of surprised that the cabin light is not completely dim during take off. Love Qantas cabin products and the colour.
Flys over Bulla Road @ 9.01 on the way to the runway. The nostalgia; used to drive back and forth on this road to the city everyday from home to work to home to work....
👏👏👏👏👏✈️Very nice! I also loved the background music you chose for this one-perfectly matched up! That Prem Eco seat on a 787-9 was insane and just unreal! So cool that you were able to switch seats!!!!! Oh, and by the way, if you don’t want those amenity kits, I will happily take them. Obsessed with them!🤣😈🤪
Thanks man! I’m a huge fan of premium economy now - so much that I’m not even going to be bummed if I can’t get a business class seat on a long flight. 👌🏻😎
Is it okay to change seats during flights? I did that one time and the stewardess was very rude and threatened to call airport security at the arrival air[port. She explained of possibility of being arrested and deported back to the country and possible liabilities if the pilot had to do an emergency landing because of this case. I was changing from economy to economy seat which was empty.
Thank you for NOT doing the amenity kit reveal. I am amazed at people who can afford $5,000 for a business class seat and get so excited over a travel size tube of toothpaste!
6 hours at San Fran, that'sbetter then me. I was there a whole day from my United Flight which departed from Phil landed before 8am and my United 787 departing at 11pm

At 2:22 when you made the comment about the seats in premium economy being the same as the kind that US carriers use in domestic first class; I thought the same thing when I flew premium economy from LAX to Tel Aviv on El Al. The entire trip I thought I was in First Class.
Aa couple of years ago I tried QANTAS after many years. I see the ground staff in Sydney have managed to hone their rudeness to a fine degree. Nothing subtle anymore just raw rudeness. Nice trip report. 👍 Strange that you didn’t get an amenity kit. I flew QF50 last year in premium economy and we got a small Country Road branded amenity kit. 🤔
Thanks! Actually, Qantas followed up with me after this flight and were kind enough to mail an amenity kit to me. A very unexpected but awesome thing to do! 😮🙏🏻👍🏻
Did you read the wrapper on the lolly? They are called Fantales and the writing has stories about movies, bios of actors etc. Hence the name Fan Tales (Fantales).
Scott how do you avoid the motion sickness induced by lack of a visible horizon on a 10+ hour overnite pacific ocean crossing? especially when you got quesy on a 10 minute jaunt from SAN to LAX on that Delta 717?
@@sanspotter crazy odd! I do notice that on trips were you chose a aisle seat you tend to have a less distressed look about you! do you take Bonine? if not , give it a try.
Glad you showed the seating space. Food and onboard announcements are of least interest. I travel alot and too often large people on either side spill over into my economy seat, take over the arm-rest and make me feel like an anorexic sardine in a narrow can. Will try P-economy next time.
Great review, my question is , would you fly Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane to NY or London non stop for 24s on the A350 or 777x which I am expecting almost the same premium economy features?
Thanks! Yes, I would do an ultra long haul in this premium economy product - but only if I had an aisle or bulkhead seat (so I could get up at any time). QF premium economy is nice!
No disrespect to you because I know how hard creating and editing videos are but, the next time you do a review like this, please make sure to include the seat recline and most importantly leg room. I’ve been searching for a good review with the things that i find most important but, still haven’t found one yet and my flight from NYC to MEL leaves in about a week.
Great video. Can't believe how delayed that flight was. I feel bad for all the people who missed their connecting flights. One of the reasons I'm thinking of staying in the city for a few days instead of immediately heading out into other parts of Australia on arrival day.
It was certainly one of the biggest delays I’ve had in a while. Luckily for me at least there are like a billion flights between Melbourne and Sydney every day and it wasn’t a problem.
Awesome TR! Unfortunate you had a delay but it looks like you had a nice flight! The 787 is a really fantastic aircraft, I'd be curious to know what the delay was for. Hopefully I'll get to fly with QF someday. Also, if you have the time, I was wondering what tracks you used for the music in your last few videos, mainly SEA-SAN, YVR-SEA, and YUL-YVR. If you could update the descriptions of those videos with links to the music, that'd be awesome!
Thanks! Definitely fly Qantas if you get the chance - they are really good (and so much better than I remember). I have no idea what the reason was for the delay, but I do know that it was bad enough that it caused the next days flight to be operated by the 747 instead. Anyway, I’ll try to update the descriptions with song titles if I can!
@@sanspotter Haha, if my flight got swapped to a 747, that'd be an upgrade for me! Been trying to get on a 747 for years, no luck yet. Also, thanks in advance for adding titles of the music!
Hey Scott! I’m flying American Airlines’ A330-200 in Economy tomorrow! (PHL-MUC) I also plan to watch Crazy Rich Asians. Is it a good film? Thanks Scott!
Hey Sam! Sorry I didn’t see your comment earlier, as you are probably already in the air by now. Anyway, Crazy Rich Asians was alright - it was more of a sappy chick flick than I was expecting, but still pretty good. Hope you enjoyed the flight to MUC!
I'm flying mel to sfo then to vegas. We arrive at terminal 1 in sfo but depart for vegas at terminal 3.. are we able to walk between the 2 terminals or do we have to get transport
Although you didn't call this vid a review (and it wasn't) I wish you mentioned how the seats where when reclined. Did you have enough leg room to stretch all the way out or did the bulkhead get in the way? Would you have more room in the seat behind you?
The only down side I can see to your flight is that sitting so close to business class, but not quite in business class, would be a little frustrating at sleep time. I'd be quite envious of the lie flats!
Great filming, editing & review. No Vegemite yet! 😭🤣. Welcome to Oz btw, come and visit Western Australia, it's nearly half the size of the whole country 👍
Very hard to justify unless you can afford it. Unfortunately economy has become very uncomfortable. I remember flying Melbourne to Auckland on an ANZ DC10 , huge wide seats & good food . Down side sheer boredom now at least I can watch a film or track the flight.
I am a VERY EARLY show up also. Mostly because of the time it mostly takes to get thru all the check points, in most airports. The airport process and procedures is what I want fixed more. Noticed you must have slept A LOT on this one. Did not see as much on flight or walk around. Qantas is one of my top 5/10 Airlines. (In no specific order). But I do choose business class for LONG FLIGHTS if I can get a good price. ANOTHER GOOD VIDEO THANK YOU
The distance doesn’t mean much in reality . The flight sometimes goes out on the NewZealand route & some days goes as far north as the Caloundra before crossing the coast . They pilots chase the best winds and minimal turbulence.
I’ve been watching these videos for a while, and it would appear that Qantas is the only premium economy to be a business minus class, where the other airlines do an economy plus version. Makes me feel incredibly lucky to have experienced it.

Scott is the only reviewer that doesn’t irritate the f*ck outta me.
Nice trip report. 👍
Strange that you didn’t get an amenity kit. I flew QF50 last year in premium economy and we got a small Country Road branded amenity kit. 🤔
Thanks! Actually, Qantas followed up with me after this flight and were kind enough to mail an amenity kit to me. A very unexpected but awesome thing to do! 😮🙏🏻👍🏻
SANspotter Wow! That’s good service! 😲👌
For some reason or another big twin aisle airplanes don’t affect me that much. Thankfully!
@@sanspotter crazy odd! I do notice that on trips were you chose a aisle seat you tend to have a less distressed look about you!
do you take Bonine? if not , give it a try.
Always Great Videos Brother 👌
Thank you as always. 😁😎👍🏻
Great video...loved your humor
Thank you! 😄 Many more videos to come...
It’s awesome man!
It was an awesome flight! I wanna do it again. 😆
Well worth staying up until 12:35am for (UK)
Sorry to keep you up so late. 😆😄
Account Suspended Hi UK From NYC
Great video. Can't believe how delayed that flight was. I feel bad for all the people who missed their connecting flights. One of the reasons I'm thinking of staying in the city for a few days instead of immediately heading out into other parts of Australia on arrival day.
It was certainly one of the biggest delays I’ve had in a while. Luckily for me at least there are like a billion flights between Melbourne and Sydney every day and it wasn’t a problem.
Nice video. Really nice edition
Thanks Luis! 😎👍🏻✈️
Very good video, love love it
Thank you Nino! 😎
Jeez this is amazing
Qantas premium economy is better than a lot of other business class products! 😮
Great video! Really enjoyed it.
You didn't show us any seat recline!
I know, I’m bummed about that too! I can’t believe I forgot to get footage of that. Oh well - the recline is much better than standard economy though.
I know. It's the main reason I watched and the most important part of an airline review! 🤨
Very nice report man!
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. 😁
😍✈ I love you!!! thanks!
Haha! Thanks man! 😎✈️👍🏻
Nice vid! Better every time!
Thanks man - I appreciate your support! 😎👍🏻
Go hawks
I hope I can release my first flight report soon 👍
I'm flying mel to sfo then to vegas. We arrive at terminal 1 in sfo but depart for vegas at terminal 3.. are we able to walk between the 2 terminals or do we have to get transport
what a great video! thanks so much!
Thank you! I appreciate it! 😎👍🏻
Very nice premium economy product!
One of the best I’ve experienced so far! 🥇
Am I missing something here...the most important facet was not covered. How far does the seat recline?
Although you didn't call this vid a review (and it wasn't) I wish you mentioned how the seats where when reclined. Did you have enough leg room to stretch all the way out or did the bulkhead get in the way? Would you have more room in the seat behind you?
Those premium economy seat reminds me of old school 1st/Business class seats in a way … kinds (in a good way though)
LOVE THE MUSIC!!!!!
Thanks Gisele! 🎶😎🤟🏻
Haha, thanks! 😆 Western Australia is my goal for my next trip down under. I can’t wait!
I love your runners. I can't tell what they are?
Beautiful!! 👍
Thanks Erik! 😎😂✈️
The only one who tells a story.
There’s a story for every experience. 📄😁
Hello there Scott, One my second nieces works for that airlines company!!! She's regionally from the Philippines.
Hi Lowie! It’s a good company to work for I’m sure. Nice planes, friendly staff - your niece must really enjoy it!
Hope you had a chance to enjoy Australia just a bit...great country and people.
Thanks Alan, yeah, I agree - everything about Australia is amazing! I hope to go back soon and do a proper visit (longer than two days).
Alan Hays nope
6 hour delay then 15 hour flight. Sounds fun
ANOTHER GOOD VIDEO
THANK YOU
The distance doesn’t mean much in reality . The flight sometimes goes out on the NewZealand route & some days goes as far north as the Caloundra before crossing the coast . They pilots chase the best winds and minimal turbulence.
