My Week with the 2022 Subaru WRX
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 лют 2022
- I spend a week with the 2022 Subaru WRX Limited to see what it's like to live with. After a good first impression on the launch event, I was curious if I'd like the new WRX more or less as my daily driver. Overall, most of my praise still remains, but there were a few new discoveries, both good and bad. I also discuss the newly announced 2022 Subaru WRX price and how it now compares to its competitors price-wise. What do you think about the new Subaru WRX? Would you pick it over an Elantra N, Civic Si or Golf R? Thanks to Subaru for providing this vehicle to review!

Here we find the elusive subaruwrxfan in his natural environment.
He's come full circle.
Complaining more about the subaru when driving one than actually saying what he likes about it
Deja Vu!
I totally read this in Sir David Attenborough's voice. 😂
Was expecting to call himself subaruwrxfan in this video or every video involving a WRX/STi
Matt and WRX is like peanut butter and jelly. Great work!
Thanks Kirk!
He's a Subaru WRX fan... 😏
He should learn how to shift then
@@ianholmquist8492 says the guy who blew his engine up with a k&n filter
@@tear728 it didn't blow up it just wasn't happy from all the dust and bugs and crap that went through the "filter" Anyway i traded that car in over a year ago. What does that have to do with shifting though?
This WRX needs more appreciation. It’s really nice once you see it in person and even more once you drive one! It drives great. Gotta adapt to changes, and this design it’s what makes it different than others.
You're definitely right with this! I went and test drove the WRX, GTI, and the Integra(basically the Si) and I loved the WRX way more than the other two
The transparency on this video is highly appreciated! One of the best reviews! 👌
Checked with local dealerships. Could get WRX 1500 under MSRP. Could get SI for 10,000 OVER MSRP.
Honda couldn't find it in the budget to keep the heated seats in the Si. Ridiculous..
Hey Matt! I'm picking up my brothers from school but I can't wait to watch this when I get home!
Matt. Of all the people to review the wrx....I have been waiting for yours. Cheers!
Great review Matt I’ll be getting one for sure
Matt, I’m already ready for Friday’s show.
What’s up everybody, Subaruwrxfan here would have been an epic intro! Was waiting for your take on this! 👍
I'm just sold on Honda quality. My wife has had Accord after Accord after Accord. Low maintenance, highly competent and usable, solid gas mileage, excellent build quality- just a solid car all around. If'n I were in the market, it'd be Civic SI. Thanks for another solid review, Matt!
I myself have a 2007 Honda Accord SE 5 speed. However it’s not confidence inspiring in the winter. And Honda doesn’t offer any manual transmission AWD vehicles anymore. So I’m going for the WRX.
Wow! I love this review so thorough.
Really excited for the GR Corolla to arrive.
Awesome review! Just got my new 22 WRX! I've notice 1st to 2nd is a bit bouncy, even with a slow release of the clutch. Any suggestions?? I usually shift between 2500-3000 rpm.
I've had many many vehicles in my 32 years of driving, and the only car I've actually missed owning/driving is my 2006 WRX TR. If yall don't remember, the TR was the Tuner Ready trim. So it was completely bare bones. And I still loved it more than any of my fully loaded cars I've had. Can't wait to check out the new WRX.
that's the best wrx/sti 👌
I'm on the 14 wrx
I thought TR stood for “Track Ready”?
the 2.4 in my outback runs rough in the cold as well (5f or colder) and never gets up to temp in those conditions either, always low.
Excellent review
Aye good review, I currently own a 2016 STI. Was considering the 2022 WRX, but rather get the Sleeper 2.0 t Accord, great mpg, reliability etc.well imo
Accord lmfao.. you should get a bmw 340i it has the same Supra b58 engine. I also had a 2016 STI and traded in for a 340.
I owned a 2018 accord 2.0 for 3 months. It was so boring I sold it almost immediately for a Type R lol.
Exactly…..boring.
Different category of vehicle.
Thanks for the in depth review. Does the new model have the automatic engine start stop feature? Like when you stop at a red light, does the engine shut off by itself, then start up when you apply gas?
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! No stop/start on the manuals!
Good review. Looks great for a base model, surely they wouldn’t forget to paint all of the cheap black plastic on the 45k one
Sorry there’s no 45k one
@@tripledub0evoxgsr since you don't want to watch the video, pricing starts at 12:50
Is there anything you can tell us about the base model? Interior wise? Haven't been able to find anything about the base model. I might just pick one up in October.
I just ordered mine! Randomly stumbled upon your channel and realized you were driving around the area I live in 😂
i love watching your reviews because i live local to the area where you film. pittsburgh rep+
Was looking forward to this video Matt, thanks for continuing to offer unbiased & honest opinions on both the looks & driving experience! I'm with you on the looks growing on me. & it looks you still thoroughly enjoyed driving it for a week, which is great. It's too bad that 80% of the comments are people that don't have a driver's license or do not have the means of purchasing a new WRX saying how they can't stand the looks/would never buy this car/etc. instead of actual objective criticism. I don't think Subaru necessarily hit a home run, but I also don't think they failed like all of these people who can't even drive are saying. Seems like the WRX (in some trim levels, anyways) is still a really solid choice in the segment. Have a good day man!
Shoutout to the 412! I can’t believe we are in the same area lol. I was like “Wait! I know those roads!” XD
I have these tires on my Bullit mustang. Better than I expected.
The front definitely looks meaner and I actually like the taillights. The main negatives are the plastic fenders and rear. Black car seems to be the way to go lol
Metalic grey is cool. White or silver will contrast with the black cladding.
Reviews 2022 WRX. Talks about how great the Si is. Edit: I've been excited for the new Si more than anything else. Current ride: 2015 Honda Fit six speed manual with the sunroof. Coming from a 2000 Camry LE auto with the 5SFE.
I’m excited for this and the new sti, I have a 2020 wrx that I love, like you said the breaks just feel weird. I’ve always stopped in time but it just feels like your not gonna.
No sti coming !
Great video WRX FAN!
I’d agree; you really can’t beat the Civic Si for a fun, reliable daily driver unless you absolutely need AWD
There are still people that blow up their civics. I feel like Hondas reputation for reliability gives people a false sense of security. They bolt on cheap parts and wait to change the oil for 5-6k. These modern day turbo’d Honda need more care and maintenance that’s the average non car person tends to give them.
I hate civic drivers. Mustang GT, WRX, mustang v6 they still try to race me. What a lame, specially the stock civics, why try. Though I have seen civics on the track and they looks fun, just slow on a straight line like a base Golf 1.8T
@@brolyvi1211 Don’t be a hater bro, they’re all one of two things; dumb and therefore not worth paying any mind to, or don’t care that they’ll lose and just trying to have some fun.
@@TheCrazyBird844 you speak truth bro ;) good putting sense. Cheers!
BRZ is alot better
I’m consistently getting just below 37 mpg in my civic Si. I have a daily commute of 40 miles each way.
Hey Matt, this is Alex, I used to work with you at the Sewickley Car Store many years ago. I'm glad to see that your channel is very popular. Congratulations!! Anyway, I was considering buying the 2022 WRX. In fact, I'm going to test drive one tomorrow afternoon at a Subaru dealership in Moon township. They have 2 premium models and I like the Solar Orange Pearl color and they have one there. I don't like the fact that they put summer tires on an all wheel drive vehicle. I was told by one dealership that if I order one this weekend, they will have it by December. So what am I going to do with an all wheel drive car, in the Pittsburgh winter, with summer tires on it? I wonder if I can negotiate something with the dealership to have them take off and keep those summer tires and have them put on some all season tires or something because that would suck to have to buy a whole set of new all season tires after buying a brand new car. Plus on top of that, it doesn't have a spare tire. I was going to buy the same rim that is on the car and put a tire on it to have a full size spare. It's a lot to think about but thank you for your input on the car because your giving me a lot to figure out. I'll let you know how the test drive goes and if I end up purchasing this vehicle.
How did the test drive go? Did you buy it? I just ordered a 2023.
@@jonathanwilliams4169 Yes, I ordered it last October and bought it 2 days after Christmas. I asked the dealer if I should order the 2023 but he said they wouldn't be available until May or middle of June. I got the Premium model with the Harmon Cardon and sunroof package in Solar Orange Pearl. I've never been in love with a car, but when I test drove this WRX, I fell in love with it because of the handling and the acceleration. The Harmon Cardon system bumps man, it's hard to believe they fit 11 speakers inside this car. You are going to enjoy this car. What color did you order?
I love Matt Maran
I think that the best part about sitting inside of the all new 2022 Subaru WRX is going to be that you can't see the outside of it from there.
But then you have to see the inside of it :\
lol as the other guy said XD but THEN you are on the inside of a subaru xDDDDDDD
😂
i still dont understand the MPG ratings... when i try to get good mpg on the highway i can break 32 on my 2020 wrx
I love how all of these 2022 WRX press videos/test drive videos are with the darkest color WRX possible. Subaru knows how people feel about that cladding. They hide it as much as possible whenever this car is in ANY sort of press environment by always providing dark colored cars.
I don't understand why they don't paint match them
@@andypacmanperez Because they're cheap bastards hahah I loved my old 17'' wrx but this new one is just hideous in every single angle
@@DippinItUp1 it looks like they gave it an extra chromosome lol
@@andypacmanperez I think I read something about that and how the material they used for that won't stick to paint so it'll end up coming off. I could completely be wrong but that's what I think I read lmao
Edit: I double checked and it’s not painted because the hexagon patterns on the unpainted flares are more aerodynamic than it being painted
Def not all of them lol
Who’s here after finding out about the cancel of the STI
That XV looks awesome
The front end looks OK. I use to love the Impreza/WRX, it hasn't looked good since 3rd Generation.
When you work the clutch wright this could win over on the BRZ. A BRZ could beat a Z06 but if you only shift what wright right.
Everyone is talking about Hyundai, Kia, VW as a WRX replacement, but ALL of you are sleeping on the BMW 340i
I had a 2016 STi stage 2, and my current stock 340 AWD with MPPSK is way faster because it has the B58 engine, same in the Supra.
No one cares for an unreliable bmw clown car 🤡
The m340i is a beast
Was waiting for : ''WHAT'S UP EVERYBODY SUBARUWRXFAN HERE''
Out of the competitors you mentioned, I'd 100% pick an Elantra N.
Thats why i got mine.
It’s an Elantra…
But no AWD option then… right?
Fail wheel drive, I’m good
@@po.russki so u mean fwd is bad? Type r? Megane rs?
Are you sure those MPG numbers aren’t from the Outback Wilderness? 19 is pretty abysmal given the size and better aerodynamics of the WRX vs the Outback Wilderness.
This a very well qualified opinion on a Subaru WRX
I'd seriously look at the Mazda 3 Turbo AWD. While its definitely less sporty, its performance numbers and price are similar. The Mazda 3's interior quality and paint job are a clear step above the WRX.
Another strong review from you. You skipped the spec sheet and gave us your impressions and experience from living with the car for a week, something that is almost impossible to determine on a test drive. Like you, I'm glad that this car still exists. However, the fuel economy is flat-out unacceptable. Even the Acura TLX Type-S gets better and it's not even the best of its class.
Turbo Subarus have always drank gas my 06 gets 6-14mpg
@@griffin_kith6214 Indeed, which is one of many reasons I've stayed away from them.
@@darrell9616 it’s worth tho it I’ve dealt with it since I was 16, smiles per miles all day
@@griffin_kith6214 It depends on what's important to you. I've never liked the drivetrain in the WRX since the gen 1 car. I would rather drive a V8 powered car TBH.
@@darrell9616 I just don’t really like the sound of v8’s for the most part but I do consider trading my wrx for a e92 m3 I love those
I've always found Subaru tuning to always be not the best. From your complaints it seems that's the case here too - they do the normal daily drive (0-20% throttle) alright, but anything after that seems like it's very inconsistent, especially when it's warm and heat soaked.
I'm a Mazda fan and I love the 4th gen turbo, especially because Subaru in their infinite wisdom killed the hatch, but I think if/when the GR Corolla comes out, that will be the new benchmark
The hatch was always the ugliest wrx imo (until this newest one) but yeah the tuning has always been rough. My 17 wrx had a dead spot at 50% throttle and 3800 rpm that was really annoying, so was the rev hang unless the Air con was turned on and 50% throttle was sometimes full throttle depending on how quick you moved your foot. My 21 sti seems like the best-sorted factory setup i have tried from subaru in recent years, feels pretty nice so far although intelligent mode throttle response seems super sluggish and sport sharp seems way too touchy so i pretty much keep it in sport.
Subarus stock tuning has always been trash, protuners specifically make such a massive difference in driving dynamics, especially when paired with some bolt on mods. I wish Mazda had a turbo/AWD/manual hatch, but I understand why they didn’t. They wouldn’t sell a ton due the market being so niche
The hatch looked hideous 🚮
If the WRX is an Impreza, why isn’t there a new model of the base car? Is there one coming soon?
Love how you stay honest even though you most likely get paid to do this review
I'm always honest! I've never been paid by a car company either, I only get paid by Google from the ads in the video :)
How would you compare this to an used last gen STI?
3x WRX owner, Subaru desperately needs a true competitor because this car can be summed up by the faces I see from the reviewers. Some smiles with a lot of mehhh faces and desperate search for positives over the previous generation. Ask yourself, did this car improve enough to justify the price hike…20 years since the first WRX and the fuel economy and performance numbers are almost identical (go look it up) and thats just pathetic. Im glad they still make it and the performance sedan market with stick and AWD is virtually nonexistent so I might be stuck with this goblin but maybe its time Subaru gets humbled by poor sales because its obvious they are not listening to their fans. I heard them say they focused on making it a better daily driver…yet all the reviews indicate they failed to deliver here also over the previous generation. Thanks for the review.
Also 3x wrx owner. And i'm here to tell you that the solution is a 21 sti. Best car decision I ever made
@@ianholmquist8492 as meh as the VA is it sure beats this new abomination
@@aspenGF8 other than aesthetics, the only legitimate complaint that can be made about the VA sti is that it is heavier and bigger than previous gens. But that happens every year with every manufacturer; things get heavier as saftey regs get more strict and people want more creature comforts. As a side note i think the VA chassis is the second best looking just behind the GD. (I'm one of those wierdos that didn't really like the look of the hatchback) *Edit: there is one other compaint with the va i forgot having owned 2 VA cars. The gas cap cover freezes shut when ever the weather turns to freezing rain, which is annoying.
@@ianholmquist8492 I own a VA too, overall it's a good car but it feels so boring compared to a GC or in my case a GF. Even my SF5 is more fun. The VA is my daily which is fine since the FA engine has better fuel economy. I'm with you on the hatchbacks, I love wagons but detest the hatchback
I think the Corolla GR might cause a reactionary response from Subaru. As some one who has had a 2016 and a 2018 WRX..I was a bit disappointed in this vehicle.
Thanks for the review, Matt. Surprised you didn't mention the Kia Stinger with the price of the GT trim.
True, it is another good competitor but it’s on the high side and doesn’t have adaptive dampers, but yeah I probably should have mentioned it. I figured the Mazda3 Turbo was the better one to focus on since it’s cheaper, lighter, and closer in size to the WRX.
Problem with the following competition:
-Elantra N is not an attractive car
-Civic SI is unfortunately a Honda lol
-GTI or Golf R is ruined by the gongshow infotainment system.
-Mazda 3 is not a very engaging car and unfortunately you can't get a manual with AWD.
WRX wins 😂
Matt ....how does the fun factor compare to your GT mustang?
I also live in PA owned a WRX for 6 years in the mid 2000's Great fun car that is practical enough to drive in cold weather states.. good Vid Matt
Spot-on, Matt. I had a 2016 WRX for six years, and a 2019 Bullitt for weekends. Sold the WRX for an Ecoboost Mustang - that crapped the bed in 6 months - the 10R80 transmission needed a new valve body at 4k miles. Drove it from the Ford dealer to a Subaru dealer and arrived at home in a 2023 WRX - best decision. Too bad the Ecoboost auto failed so early in its life. Not a bad car, but lousy manufacturing and engineering design. The ‘23 WRX is fantastic.
Can you please test drive the auto version? Thanks!
Great review but I went for the Elantra N
I’d do the same! Congrats on getting yours!
@@MattMaranMotoring You are always too kind and civil. I admire that. = D But this WRX is disgusting. I've been following WRX releases and gen's since the STi appeared in the US in 2004 and a neighbor brought one home. While not aiming to be a GORGEOUS vehicle, it always looked solid and appropriate for the tuner community. Imposing. This thing looks like Subaru's monolithic cat coughed up a giant plastic hairball.
Let's see this lifted and with wider wheels and tires
Gosh I really hope the STi will bring some more power.
It’s sad they cancelled the STI 😢
Actually looks half way decent looking I'm dark gray. Can't really see the cladding as easily
I currently own a 21 base STi. Keep the STi or order a limited WRX?
Keep the sti for sure. How is that even a question?
Lifters getting stuck probably needs well broke in for that cold?
Your the youtube channel i never watch but somehow can never unsubscribe from like you feel at home now 😂
Could that bucking be clutch judder? I had an Impreza RS that was awful when it was cold and wet outside
Could be, maybe this car has had a rough life so far.
All subaru's need to warm up abit. My 17 wrx did the same thing and it was just the engine not liking a cold start and me immediately driving away. The ej 257 in my sti doesn't have the same issue but i still let it warm. port injection rigs don't run as rich on cold starts so ej's are not as bad with the cold start herky-jerkies. No car is great to just drive away at dead cold but subaru likes to at least come up off the peg and always has
He definitely let off the clutch pedal aggressive while engine was rotating faster than the car was moving for that gear. Yeah, I do have some judder on muggy humid/wet days though.
Did you happen to drive the WRX with snow on the ground with those pilot all seasons? Im moving back to colorado from california and I've always had snow tires and all seasons combo when i lived in california.
Only going up my driveway and only about an inch or two of snow so not much of a test haha but I've heard good things about the Pilot all-seasons for milder winters.
@@MattMaranMotoring it really does suck that the wrx doesnt come with all-seasons option. What a waste of expensive summer tires. I'd keep them, but sometimes it snows in june and getting caught out in the snow with summer tires is scary.
I would love to consider this car, but the fuel economy for a 4-cylinder is too much to get over, especially with gas prices the way they are. I'm hoping to buy a 2022 or 2023 civic Si, depending on when I can find one for MSRP or less.
And it needs premium gas. I am always crying while refueling my 2015 WRX other than that I love my car
@@davekeller6115 I don’t think the 2022 wrx needs premium gas

Sad they cancelled the sti 😢
@@procrunchie4899 yeah….we’ll we are certainly in a turning point of automotive history
I was debating between the automatic & manual & it seems that the automatic gives more bang for ur buck with all the extra safety features, but wasn’t sure if it was gonna have the moon roof bc it didn’t say it on my spec sheet when I ordered it, where did Subaru release all of the info on that?
If you can get MSRP on the civic its a good buy but the problem in some areas is that the used ones are going for over MSRP with 30k miles. The Subaru dealer offered MSRP but then you have to wait. Depends if you have a decent dealer not trying to over charge.
I've been pretty back and forth about this car but... 19mpg with a 4 cylinder? I know you don't buy this car for the mpg but with competitors in the high 20s and low 30s it just doesn't seem reasonable in the long run.
It’s gettin ej Sti mpg 😂
This right here. The state of the world is no place for cars that get worse MPGs.
Mazda3 Turbo averages 27 MPG!
Agree. 19mpg too costly on premium fuel for daily driver.
You got it right, people don’t buy this car for the mpg, but the thing people don’t consider is this isn’t a FWD based AWD system. This is a north-south engine configuration with the transmission below the shifter which makes for far better AWD than the FWD based systems.
anyone have any comments on road noise on these VBs vs the last gen? Test drove a VA wrx a few years ago and it was quite loud, not in a good way
Been watching Matt since he was subaruwrxfan,
One question i have all throught out the years.
Who takes those shots outside of the car when ur driving it? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So far I have 17 of these ordered and I cannot wait to deliver on them! 🙌🏼 those excited faces are gonna make this all worth it
Im surprised this gets the same mpg as my auto TL-S
Damn it gets F150 mpg’s & I could live with that too if it didn’t look like the Crosstrek 🤣🤣 … jokes aside another great review!!
My 21 sti gets 13 to 16 mpg lol. Not complaining but like you pointed out, full size trucks do better. My 17 wrx got 26to 30 mpg. Not sure how the new gen got worse
@@ianholmquist8492 must be that “improved power band” 🤣🤣
I'm going to keep my 2016 WRX limited, the wheel plastics around the fenders are ugly.........
@matt how does this compare to the Elantra N
I compare them from a pricing and value standpoint towards the end of the video. In addition to those points, as far as the driving experience, the Elantra N feels lighter, more playful and faster. It also sounds way better with its active exhaust and is much more adjustable with its adaptive dampers and drive modes. The only thing the WRX does better is putting power down, the Elantra N is happy to spin the tires if the conditions aren't ideal, but I'd argue that can add to the fun too. If it were my money I'd definitely take an Elantra N over the WRX.
You ready two go out ware theirs _____.it's my favorite..
So scared for the new STIs price. Glad the WRX drives really well still though. Even after getting a bit more used to the looks, I think I’d buy any of those other cars you mentioned or a used previous gen WRX. The grey color you have it in though does hide the cladding quite well.
Count on spending 50k for an sti. A 21 sti limited with most of the options would run you 48after tax.
@@lucian7182 yeah, probably all of 50k for the new one and then some. the 21 limited all optioned out was almost 10k more than the 21 base i ordered last april. And i'm sure they arent much cheaper on the used market right now
Ian Holmquist seriously though, my 21 sti limited ran me 48k after tax
@@lucian7182 no doubt man. I went with the base in lapis blue pearl with the only options being short throw shift kit and weathertech matts. Out the door for 38,800. Now I'm at 8 months of ownership i'm still just as in love as day 1. The only problem i've experienced is android auto screwing with my speakers sometimes when i use that feature, and i don't really blame that on the car. How about you?
Ian Holmquist I have a CWP, and I love it, it definitely has its quirks but I love it in a way I never loved my 2020 Wrx. I’m glad it was the limited trim because the upgraded sound system is actually pretty nice, the blind spot monitoring is definitely useful, and I love using the sun roof.
the rear bumper to me reminds me of old school bumpers and i like it.
In cities , I used to prefer black bumpers because lots hit your car when parking, it's shows less than a scratch on the painted bumper
However, out of all the cars you mentioned, none of them will last as long as the wrx.
Halfway through the Rev range at 80 MPH in top gear?
Yep!
Subaru is out of their mind with the GT package at $42k.
No kidding! I bought a base 21 sti 6 months ago for 38.8k.
Does everything good. Nothing perfect. That flaw makes it another perfect Subaru . Shit’s fine. Great review 🍻
direct injection is why cold start is like in the winter .
😂 this explains your answer on instagram! But then you mention the golf r for the same money, shoot!
Matt, what’s the NVH like? The road noise seemed extremely loud during your drive or was that just the camera mic?
Great question, definitely wish he touched on that during this review
It’s a wrx it’s gonna have a lot of nvh
Sorry I didn’t mention it. It was acceptable for the segment, I’d say about the same as Civic Si and Elantra. Mazda3 is definitely way quieter inside though and so was the Golf R.
The plastic cladding doesn't look too bad when the car's paint color is dark, great video.
Kinda highlights what it would look like (actually really good imo) if they hadn’t put all the plastic on it
Yea for someone like me who despises the cladding I’d have to get this car in black or the gray color Matt is driving
This is not my favorite color but honestly it looks the best on the 22. It even works well with the darker accents of the tail lights and headlights. I ordered one in White and will most likely be switching to dark grey
Elantra N DCT or this?
Great review Matt! I traded my 2013 WRX Limited for my 2018 Tundra sr5 TRD Offroad. I still miss my WRX from time to time...
Thanks Daniel!
