I'm lost why giving Jacklin the putt is considered such a big deal. It was a gimmie. No Ryder Cup player is going to make the other player putt that close

The remainder of the US team was furious with Nicklaus over it. No putts are complete gimmes especially when the stakes are "make it and gain nothing or miss and be embarassed in my home country." While he likely makes the putt, it eliminated the possibility of the US winning outright, rather than simply retaining it.

Stand over a 2’er. For all the marbles. Not beating a buddy, but winning. And I mean winning. Then you’ll understand how 2’ can seem like a breaking mile.

@@thatguy088well said. The US team would’ve liked to see Jacklin make the putt with so much pressure on it and the entire event riding on it. It was a classy move but I do agree I think it was a little over blown. It was probably less than 2 feet as they history describes it

I've seen better players on the tour today 3 putt from that distance with less stakes on the line. Nicklaus has spoken on why he picked up the marker, Jacklin just started to grow in fame and was the recent "hero" of European golf. Had he missed it, he figured he'd be critized for life and didn't want to see his career get torpedo'd.

Its unlikely that Jacklin would have missed - but Nicklaus wasnt going to give him the chance to. American Captain Sam Sneed was livid with Nicklaus however.

Never seen this video before, thought they were going to give each other the first putts when it was made out it was a big concession 😂

Definitely an overblown event. They had already retained the cup with Jacks putt and Tony’s was literally a tap in that wouldn’t change the result.😂

      I thought the same.
Apparently during this Ryder cup both teams were accused of or guilty of some unsportsmanlike behaviour so Nicklaus (who was playing in just his first Ryder cup) conceding this putt was a big gesture in the overall context of the event.

By Nicklaus giving that putt to Jacklin shows a lot of class when the USA team had been dominating for many years. Now that Europe has been dominating for many years, maybe someone on that team needs to do something magnanimous now. The Ryder Cup teams from Europe and USA may need to change. The USA team members are from the PGA in America, while the Europe team members have come over to the USA. They go to an American college, play their college golf, and more of them the than usual join the PGA and reside here in the USA. The European players have become more Americanized than the American players. So something needs to change!

the so called "concession" meant nothing. That was a typical and polite well calculated jack Nicklaus gesture, USA retained the Ryder Cup so that gesture meant literally nothing in terms of competition.

@@incitatusdelaruinalparaiso3166 and if you watch them talk about it, Jacklin even says he didnt want to make the putt, because making it still meant the US retained the cup, and missing it meant they outright lost. @@thatguy088 This is the typical Nicklaus gesture. He embraces the rival (He did the same thing when he lost in "the duel in the sun)" For me it is a paternalistic humilliating gesture.

strange, i'd always thought the story was that they both had similar length putts and conceded each others. this makes more sense but is less dramatic. america had retained the cup anyway and jacklin wasn't going to miss that.

It's funny that you have respect for Nicklaus but that doesn't cause you to reconsider your own opinion on Trump, instead you get stuck in cognitive dissonance.
Shows how strong the conditioning from the media is.
