Nicklaus didn't want to see the match end with a missed 2 footer. Can't blame him for that.

A true sportsman of honour integrity and dignity not many left if any, his captain on the day however regardless of his achievements in the game could be a real jaggy nettle .

American captain Sam Snead later berated Nicklaus - saying he should have made Jacklin putt out.

Sam Sneed - the American Captain was very unhappy with Nicklaus saying they went there to win the cup not draw.

It just proves that Jack was a bigger man than Sammy. Either way, the Americans were retaining the Cup.

I like Nicklaus a lot, but I can't imagine ANYONE making Jackin putt that. Ok, maybe Suzann Petterson.

Easy decision to make as it didn't make a difference to the result as USA were already holders of the cup. If Europe were holder's Niklaus would've made Jacklin putt as USA needed to win the hole.

Would he have done it if Jacklins put was to win the cup....That would be interesting 🧐

Jack is the greatest sportsman I've seen.
I think he said....you may have missed it but I didn't want to give you that opportunity.
It was also Jack that ensured it became Europe vs The USA

It sounded more like "I don't think you'd have missed it but I didn't want to give you the opportunity in these circumstances."

the so called "concession" meant nothing. That was a typical and polite well calculated jack Nicklaus gesture, USA retained the Ryder Cup so that gesture meant literally nothing in terms of competition.

This is nonsense. It was the difference between winning the match and drawing it. Many of his team-mates were furious.
US captain Sam Snead said: "When it happened, all the boys thought it was ridiculous to give him that putt. We went over there to win, not to be good ol' boys."
To say it "meant nothing" is completely incorrect.

@@whowatchesthwatchmen it meant nothing because the own concept of "winning" is a childish concept regarding this matter.

It’s called sportsmanship you clown. A class gesture from a great man.

Total class and golf is the only classy sport left. The others have been taken over by classless thugs that all have a personal and usually a most ignorant agenda. Using your prestige and fame to do good is different than using it for a brighter spotlight on yourself. Thank you Jack for showing the way.
