The Haligtree was an attempt at a double helix, but one half never formed because of Mohg's intervention. It appears that Godwyn's Deathroot fills that void in the DLC image and completes the intertwining of Life and Death.

post dlc, I think the Spira incantation along with the Hornsents lore makes me believe that the spiral is an attempt at communion with the Outer Gods, or the Greater will.
Lead Design, after watching this:
“Huh. I really do tend to gravitate towards the spiral, don’t I?”
This is the comment I was looking for 🤣🤣🤣
Well, the double helix is the Caduceus, symbol of alchemy and hermeticism, these together being the biggest influences of Elden Ring.
This along with the ideas of the crucible making primal life through double helix dna/magic of alchemy, a parallel to real life the devs might try and make
Its also the tree from berserk, the actual biggest inspiration
There’s a lot of plant mythology and botanical references. O_O
Facts, beat me too the berserk is the true biggest inspiration @@MrsSankta
It could also be Celtic in nature. Celtic are the culture this kind of symbology originates from, the Celtic knot.
Same thing with Scandinavic folklore which used similar knotted designs in their written stones, which are literally called 'Rune(s)'. And if you look at the over all style and setting of the game it is extremely Celtic/pre-christian European. I feel like these are no coincidence, and I love it. These cultures are absolute gold.
Well, well, well! I bet you feel vindicated now after the DLC confirmed this pattern's importance and meaning!
I made a post last week about helices being literally everywhere on the elden ring reddit! Once I started to notice them I was losing my mind at how frequently I would start to see them-in architecture, in weapons, in armor, in items, in spells. @Hawkshaw I would love love love a full video delving into the helix lore/symbolism. I think it speaks to something fundamental, outside of the Golden Order or any order. Like gravity or time. Maybe duality itself is the deeper fundamental truth of the Lands Between. The instances of twins in inherent opposition. Even the domains of Marika and Gloam-Eyed Queen seem to be fundamentally opposed.
Hah this is like spirals in Uzumaki
They also sometimes plays with the ideas of dual identity. An individuals dual personas that completely contradicts the other, yet they’re so opposed that they can be considered the same.
E.G - like how it is implied there were no conflicts between Frenzied flame and the order of the Erdtree before. Back when there was no order, and when there was no frenzied flame. In fact, they were all one. Then something happened that split the two down the middle, leading to two forces with completely opposing ideals - creating Marika’s order and the Frenzied flame, even though they were once the same thing together.
This duality could be said about a lot of things: the creation Godfrey completely contradicts Hoarah Loux actual morals, The Beast Clergyman is suffering identity disorder despite his other half being one of the greatest warriors of the lands between, Morgott and Mohg being twins also reinforces the fact that they each have opposing rules when it comes to Omenborn even though they’re both omen (this one in particular is definitely a GRRM thing lol)
Which is also why I find it fun that you suggest the contrast Between Marika and the Dusk Queen…. Because I actually think they are the same person. Or atleast twins of some sorts, but their ideals differ too heavily to be indifferent to one another.
Often it is those who you disagree with the most are the ones you have the most in common with. Refer back to the Golden Order and the Frenzied Flame
You could probably find a lot of circles if you look for those too
Ever notice that Elden Ring has a lot of rings in it?

Yes, duality is the theme of Elden Ring
You know for an order that hates the crucible they sure like to employ literal soldiers who served the crucible and put a spiral in everything
All things can be conjoined?
Turtle Pope.
Reminds me of the crucible. All life there is connected, and through order Marika created the idea it was seperate or inferior but it is an illusion
Hawkshaw is always ahead of his time !!!!
The spiral is very prevalent in Shadow of the Erdtree!!!!
In the dlc you find the Spiral spell, where it says that it takes inspiration from the Divine Tower built to reach the very Gods.
In the Corrupted perfumer armor it says that it represent the Erdtree.
So, it most likely represent the Erdtree, and when the first ever divine tower was built in the Shadow Realm, it was meant to represent it, becoming so a divine commemoration that everyone admired.
Wether the tree was seen as Mother of the Crucible or where the Order resides, it meant a lot for every person in the land. Hence all the inspired twirling designs.
At least, that's my guess
He did predict this detail before the DLC
right pretty cool that it has lore significance now
Kendrick: it's inside my DNA
I think the double helix represents the laws of Regression and Causality, and as such is why it shows up in so many different places and cultures, specifically things relevant to life, death, beginnings, or finality such as the Crucible (source of all life) or in the Godslaying weapons (the end of an eternal being)
The shape is comprised of 2 spirals, representing the Causal relationship between all things, and they're forever chasing each other but never converging, i.e. Regression
Dlc finally explained it.
I love this track! Behelit.
I had it on a constant loop when i read Berserk.
For me it's the theme to the series, even more than "Guts' song" !
Owl father’s hair was the Elden ring reference the whole time
Man you blew my mind all those years ago with your dark souls video explaining the flower motifs, u still got u you legend
The background berserk theme is giving me goosebumps
I think it symbolises change, often threat, to the greater will. The Oracles, Miquella's Needle, the Elden Lords, Godslayer Greatsword, just makes sense
Let’s try spinning! That’s a good trick!
The Godslayer Greatswords are made of Moonlight Butterflies.
Something twisting upon itself often symbolizes strength and durability
From what I understand, FromSoft games don't exactly do traditional storytelling in video games like what God of War or Mass Effect does, and it's not really something like Planescape Torment or Fallout 1 either. Instead, it's just a fuck ton of vague environmental storytelling with a few snippets of actual exposition and history, and a shit ton of cool looking visuals that express themes in real life.
Elden Ring dabbles in non-duality. The belief that two separate things are not separate at all, and are in fact the same thing, the most literal example being the queen and Radagon being the same exact homie. Mohg's weird fetus brother wife comes off as androgynous. The common visual queue for non-duality seems to be two things coiling, or even two beings infused together. Some of the Fingers may give different abilities with different concepts crucial to their beliefs, but they ultimately carry the same theme of corruption, so even though we have a bunch of separate powers at play, it's still all meant to be the same core power at the end of the day.
It's the spiral of the crucible
Twinned fates, is my bet. The idea of opposites needing each other to both exist
As soon as I heard Behelit playing in the background, I subbed.
Well the DLC finally explains it! Crazy because it seemed like something that would never be explained but now it has.
You need to watch Gurren Lagann. The spiral is a circle that moves forward with each rotation.
Dlc seems to tell us with spira that it’s a way to call to the gods

The sword that was once radagon was a call I wasn't expecting, not lying, but it makes sense
dude theres literally spiral incantations now
This aged like fine wine, considering the meaning of spirals in the DLC.
It symbolizes the Crucible (akin to the force in concept) which is the coalescance of primordial energy. The spiral wether ascending or descending is seen as the process of all life. The hornsent were a chosen people who abused that notion, bringing about their very own downfall
Spiral power!!! “PIERCE THE HEAVENS GURREN LAGANN!!”
Tfw one guy at FromSoft just thinks spirals are really neat 👀
Edit: 🤦🏻 double helixes....ffs
Now, after the dlc, we know it means divinity
Idk if I’d necessarily consider things like the hairstyles or when it was vertically around the helmet. Having a braided crown thing like that is a pretty common hairstyle and especially in fantasy games. But I guess now I must watch the vid to get the full lore
MARIKA, GUIDE MY BLADE
Seems like a representation of duality, a reference to the golden order really and therefore order in general I say
Read the spiral sorceries and incantations from the DLC
It's called a Helix... look it up.
I think this symbolism must be a reference to the perfection in duality, in alchemy, genres are represented as the sun and moon, and the merge of both is a perfect being. As marika and radagon, and the helix in everything else.
It seems we might now know the answer
It's the Crucible. Probably because it's DNA
POV: your buddy just realized how much symbolism is in a FromSoftware game
My best guess is it represents the eternal life of the gods. With the godlslayers greatsword using it almost to mock the lives of gods. Placidusax's remaining 2 heads are also in this position. Which makes sense for a lord who rests in the eye of a storm beyond time. The symbol represents the eternal cycle of the gods as they never truly die.
Usually the symbolism behind the serpent is about ciclicity of time as gnostics belived, or healing as egyptian thought.
But it is also an animal correlated to creation/fertility and Metamorphosis.
And all these holy characters have snakes on their outfits probably due to a healing and metamorphosis meaning.
Thanks mate one youtube short is gonna make me watch Berserk from start to finish again.
You play any music from berserk and I instantly start listening
What's interesting to me about this is the fact the hornsent use spiral incantations
The berserk music gives me chills everytime
I bet you can also find it in the primal Elden Ring of Farun Azula
... seems maybe... it's a spiral
Maybe it represents Marika and Radagon , 2 strands of 1 braid, causality and regression (as vaati vidya says)
Now with dlc this makes more sense, because hornsent folk believed that this symbol (spiral called in game) represents crucible and its divine. And i guess people of Lands Between inherent this symbol while Realm of Shadow was part of continent
For me, it represents the destiny of every living being intertwined.
I believe it’s a reference to the spiral of the crucible the primal form of the Erdtree
It's the symbol used in alchemy, yes. The symbol that represents what Alchemy aspired to: gold transmutation
Its not a snake thing, its the influence and roots of the Cruicible in everything. The Cruicible, and its spiral current is the primordial cosmic force and latent power that created all living things in the Lands Between. Its basically "The Source"
Seeing this short after the dlc trailer dropped is giving me conniptions
Those are multiple different symbols expressing the relationship between the struggles of opposing orders in a given possible arrangement. If the two points come together into a point that is different than if they open up like in the godslayers great sword or if they stay in sync like in the glintstone helix spell.
Its the same as tasha's
"You know i really like this change"
Guessing it represents the crucible tree. Those spiralling sprouts which united as one. Even the energy blast of the Crucible spear has a spiralling shape.

The Erdtree/Crucible and its twin the Shadowtree? Honestly duality is a huge theme in Elden Ring, it could be SO many things.
when elden ring development first annoucement came out I remember reading that at first it was being inspired in celtic aesthethic and mythology
I believe it's about duality, plain and simple. Order and Chaos. Then you also have dual characters like Marika/Radagon, Miquella/St. Trina, Melina/Messmer (possibly).
The behelit theme was an excellent song choice
The double helix of divinity is within us all

lol love how he shows braided hair and is like “it’s a helix!”
Man discovers balance and symmetry and thinks its a grand conspiracy
Ah yes the hidden lore of Elden Ring, testicular torsion
Yeah we used to draw it on our desks at school all the time
Knowing now that the spiral is favored as a symbol of the Greater Will by the Hornsent, can we then assume that the Hornsent are the foundational culture of humans in the lands between? Or is it possible that these different groups have also witnessed the true form of divinity, the spiral, which Marika and the fingers tried so desperately to replace?
It’s means they needed something to fill the voided space, so they said “we’ll just scribble it in like we’re testing a new ballpoint pen.”
