Especially by these two who invented modern comedy as we know it ; situation comedy, character comedy , surreal slapstick , running gags all L&H innovations, and the "bonus" gags-like at the end of "Hogs Wild" where Stan is trying to start the car-just watch Ollie's face! It's a masterpiece of comic acting... there's so many of todays comic gags that everyone thinks are so original; I'm screaming "Laurel and Hardy did that gag !" Another thing that makes them so funny is the fact that Ollie is actually thicker than Stan ! "Why didn't you tell me you had two legs?" Priceless,

This clip is from "Block-Heads" (1938) and is one of my favorite scenes in all of Laurel and Hardy's films. Their reunion after a separation of 20 years (Stan was never told that World War I was over!) is so heartwarming, and shows why L&H are so different from other comedy teams. Other teams (Hope and Crosby, Abbott and Costello) tend to be rivals, but L&H are two innocent, kindred spirits united against a hostile world. They have a difficult friendship but it is unbreakable. We love Stan and Ollie because they love each other so much.

I have loved Laurel and Hardy for 56 of my 61 years, and had the pleasure of knowing and interviewing many people who worked with them in the 1920s and '30s. Ultimately I wrote a book about how L&H made their films. I have seen in recent years how little kids seeing them for the first time will scream with laughter, even though the films are nearing 90 years old and are in black and white. I hope more young people will discover them. I was five when I first saw them and my love for them has never diminished.

How wonderful to be able to communicate with you. I've known your name for many years. but I confess I didn't know much about your background... until now - I just finished reading the Wikipedia article about you! WOW! I wish I had several years to talk with you! I seem to recall seeing your name on many IMBD film reviews. I'm guessing I also saw your name on those chats which, sad to say, have been terminated.
As for me, I could talk forever about my love for L & H. Yes, I climbed those "Music Box" stairs (all 131 of them). And yes, I made a pilgrimage to see the " Big Business" house on Dunleer in the Cheviot Hills area. And once upon a time I got to meet Chuck McCann! And here I am now chatting up somebody who has interviewed, among many others, Anita Garvin, with whom I have been hopelessly in love forever. I could go on and on, but I won't presume any longer on your time, except to express my deep appreciation for all you have done, and to say again what a pleasure it is for me to have this "chat" with you.

I absolutely love Laurel and Hardy. Many comedic actors fell from popularity when film transitioned from silent to talkies, but not these two. Their best work was their comedy shorts IMO. They wrote their own scripts for those and were given complete creative control, including directing and ad-libbing.
Sadly for L & H, their Feature Movie work was often met with struggles. Unlike the comedy shorts, Movie executives would not give creative control to Laurel and Hardy. The movie executives only wanted to use L & H's fame to promote their own ideas and comedy suffered - but L & H fought hard to get some of their material in and still had their moments.

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy had modestly successful solo careers, but when they became a team, comedic magic ensued. They made some silent comedy shorts in the mid-1920s, and successfully transitioned into the "Talkies Era". Laurel and Hardy also made some full-length films together, from the mid-1930s until around 1950. Oliver Hardy died in 1957 of cancer, and Stan Laurel died in 1965.

    • @chrisparkes2179
      @chrisparkes2179 3 роки тому

@@LaptopLarry330 Very cleverly they didn't rush into talkies like others did. They took time off, waiting for the glitches in the new technology to be ironed out. They spent the time working out exactly how they would use sound to enhance their comedy. They used some wonderful sound effects, such as the fly spray in "Our Wife".

      @LaptopLarry330 3 роки тому

@@CoffeeConnected I would not say that Oliver Hardy was remarkably strong, so much as he was especially tough. Comedians in the 20th Century that engaged in physical, slapstick comedy in films and on stage had to be very, very tough, because the wear and tear took a heavy toll on their bodies. Jerry Lewis got hooked on painkillers, and it took him a number of years to get himself clean.

The Music Box - the one about moving a piano up a steep hill etc., won the first academy award for short subject film. YOU MUST SEE IT. Some people didn't understand the comedy of frustration, dumbness and friendship. These are the same people who saw ET flying past the moon on a bicycle and go out loud in the theater "I'm sure, that would never happen" but then go to see Dumb and Dumber and laugh and think this kind of stuff is new. Laurel and Hardy invented it. When people only judge this type of humor by logic, they have no soul or patience. They only understand verbal humor. I wouldn't want to work for them! This is called slapstick, physical humor with verbal humor. These two are the ultimate classic comedy duo. recently in 2019 they released a movie about them which is well worth it, it really tugs at your heartstrings with poetic license about their last days as a team, focusing on their friendship. You'll laugh during the film and cry at the end. "Stan and Ollie"

Here's how good of a friendship this was: Oliver Hardy died first. Stan refused to work with anyone else, though he was given many offers; and until the day he died, he kept writing Laurel and Hardy comedies.

There is a famous and widely-seen act about them going to get a driving license, that was only performed on stage in live shows, and often in rote-learned other languages.
It has never been seen on film, and is considered a 'lost' classic, as it proved immensely popular wherever they went.

In spite of the frequent contentions, one thing I greatly liked about Laurel and Hardy compared to the later comedy team of Abbott and Costello was the warm friendship they Laurel and Hardy had, a warmth that was completely absent to the point of coldness in Abbott and Costello.
I can't imagine Abbott ever carrying Costello like this. He would have told him to get up and hop! Still, both are funny teams.

I hope you watch more Laurel and Hardy in the future. Many of their shorts and even some of their full length films can be found for free right here on UA-cam!
    Some of my Favorites are:
    -Liberty
    -Thats my Wife
    -Why Girls Love sailors
    -Their First Mistake
    -Towed in a hole
    -Pack up your troubles
    -Babes in Toyland
    -Our Wife
    -Way Out West
-Blockheads (a clip of the movie you are watching now).
Some fun facts about Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy:
-That they were life long partners and loved each other very much, spending more time together in their older years. Their bond is legendary. They were soulmates.
-They won a Academy Award for their short "The Music Box".
-Oliver was a very good singer and sung in a couple of their movies.
-Stan was a writer, director for a lot of their movies, going uncredited at times

Pretty much everything from 'Putting Pants on Philip' until MGM had their contracts is GOLD, the MGM films are less so, but had larger budgets.
Basically Stan Laurel was no longer permitted to create their material.
The very last ones can be painful; 'The Big Noise' is in the fifty worst films of all time list.

It was decided (possibly by Hal Roach?) when they switched from silent films to talkies that Ollie would get wet in every picture. Many of the "puddles" he falls into are often over his head. The mangled cars that still ran after being damaged and were used in a number of their films were made by a firm that constructed them for the movies and cost more than what a new car would have cost from the showroom.

Many Laurel and Hardy films have them driving in Ford Model T or A cars and trucks.
These cars were so easily found and so cheap, that sometimes three or four would be exploded, crashed, sunk in ponds, even bent into a curve so they could only drive in circles in one movie.
They managed to keep this up into the 1940s, and even later. That they stuck with this old car became a joke in itself.

The team of Laurel and Hardy was sometimes broken in their films, here due to Laurel never having been told WWI was over, and having a huge stockpile of beans.
Another is when they are separated by Hardy being killed in an explosion. Laurel sees Hardy floating up to heaven, looking down and being sad to to go.
Later Laurel is walking down a country road (perhaps years later), with the saddest expression on his face, sits by a fence to rest, looks up and smiles.
Then we see there's a horse with Hardy's mustache and hat leaning over a fence.
'Gosh I'm glad to see you!'
'Well this is another fine mess you got me into!'
It's a touch of what has been called Laurel's 'White Magic', where he can flick his thumb and cause it to light on fire like a cigarette lighter, or he can walk across a river ankle deep when Hardy falls in a hole deeper than him, and a number of others.
If their movies are watched from the point of view of 'who is the smartest, Laurel or Hardy?', this kind of thing shows up quite a bit, and it's a bit deeper than just slapstick or violent humour.
