I played this concerto when I was 12 years old. That was in 1977. I was smart though and played the timpani while I let some other idiot play the violin part. I became a professional percussionist, and the rest is history. I love your humor, keep up the good work and smile more!
Oh wow, Thanks man! Also Congrats man! professional percussionist!!
You got me for a second
@@bozartspianoarchive3546 I just tried the same dry humor :)
Love this comment!
"had us in the first half, not gonna lie."
hey, im a violinist at Juilliard and i am being honest when i say that this is actually pretty stand up. Seriously, you have a good sound and i can see how passionate you are about playing. Don't be hard on yourself, there's always room to improve, but this is a wonderful start! Keep up the good work man.
Wow, thank you so much! I appreciate your comment! Oh and is Perlman still there?
I’m another idiot who attempted Mendelssohn. You are brave to play in front of everyone. Good job!
👏👏👏 Thank you! 😂
You are allowed to play any piece you like. I’m sure Mendelssohn would not have stopped you. Whether you do it brilliantly or not is opinion. Just because I’m not usaine bolt should not stop me running a race.
Haha count me in!
With the internet, we are exposed to the most extraordinary talent daily and can this can give the false perception that such ability is ubiquitous. However, the truth is that playing any violin concerto to any acceptable degree is a remarkable achievement and indicative of real talent and hard work. Good luck; hopefully we'll see you with the CPO/JPO or KZNPO in the next few years!
Thank you so much!! Someone from SA (:
Well said👌
1:20
True! He's done a great job!
Hey! I also played Mendelssohn when I was your age, and you sound way better than I did. Yet somehow I still became a professional violinist. You have some great potential. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man!! (:
@@RubsViolin that smily face is backwards.
@@dareelpeeps290 noooooooooo ):

This concerto is very difficult even for professionals, but this teenager managed to somehow play it, and if I were you, I would not call him an idiot, even if some notes were out of tune or not played, he could get excited before the concert, no need underestimate individuals.
Yeah, maybe it wasn't too Terrible I guess lol, hopefully he clutches up next time
@@RubsViolin yeah
Haha 😂
@@Kth1723 very true lol
Amazing! That was very good playing of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto!👍👍👍
Thank you (:
Actually really good. I find with performing music I always have to expect to play like 30-40% worse than I would do when practising. So don’t get so caught up with slight mistakes! And remember that your harshest critic is yourself. All these small errors you notice only you will notice. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much man! (:
So true, I’m a bassist but when I perform or record I feel like 50% of my technique goes out the window
It's not a boring part, it's probably the most beautiful part, and shows how good a person's expressive bowing and sound, really is.
But I would say well done, you've achieved what countless people couldn't achieve👏. Remember, even Heifetz sounded the same at first, they all did. Keep practising. 👍
As an idiot attempting to learn this concerto at the moment, I appreciate seeing another, fellow idiot play it. Great work man 👍
Haha, good luck man! (;
@@RubsViolin 😂 Thanks dude
Thanks for the video! It is actually very informative (and funny). Soloist make it look so easy, for non musicians, we might lose the notion of how difficult it is! Seeing this video helps me appreciate more both the pros and non pros 😊
Congrats and keep going! 💪🏻😁
This was so much fun, watching you mock your performance. You play really well, mate. Really enjoyed it.
Tysm man! (:
😂 I love that I stumbled upon this. I've just been geeking out over Brett Yang's Mendelssohn.
The timing was *chef's kiss*.
It goes to show how different practice and performance are.
Also, hello?? You did such a good job! I love your ricochet chords. ❤
Also, your g string passages were very cool. Powerful 💪
And another thing: your octaves were solid :0)
Thanks so much! (: Perfect timing haha
Yes exactly!! I thought the octaves sounded cleannnn
This is actually pretty good. I know how many hours you have to put in to play like this. Keep it up sir!
Thank you very much! (:
I’m in college and I’ve been having a go at the Mendelssohn on and off for years. I still struggle with the intonation of the opening so much😅 this was very good you pulled it off in the end!! Refreshing to not see perfection 100% of the time in pieces like this. With all these professional recordings it’s so easy to forget that it’s a process that takes decades to perfect.
It is really nice to see recordings where people don't play 100%, can relate haha. But good luck man! I'm sure you'll eventually play it as good as Ray Chen (:
It's not perfect, but seriously, most of the adult amateur violinists I know would not be able to play this. Period. Just keep practicing and learning, and see where you get. Probably somewhere really impressive, if you keep putting in the effort that got you this far.
Thank you
As a professional beginner this was actually quite good.❤
Haha, never thought of a term like that before, but thank you!! (:
just subscribed! i like your vibe! and youre totally not a idiot for this. it was brave to attempt this and you did better than most people would!!!!!
Hahaha, thanks so much man (:
Great content
I enjoyed watching
Keep it up!

4:45 The leader of the orchestra falls asleep during your cadenza 😂
(You are a GREAT player btw…just that it is work in progress. Enjoyed your performance!)
I would have fell asleep too lmao, but thanks man!! (:
Hello Rubs, great performance dont get too fixated on the small things. I recently performed Vivaldi's spring with a youth orchestra, and while it was not a perfect performance I found it less beneficial to dwell on the past, and instead practice for the future! You sound great. Keep it up.
goddamn bro i can never get those bouncing bows right in the cadenza it ticks me off but you did it really well like actually u slayed that saltando part sheeesh
Yooo, thank you man (: You'll get it eventually don't worry haha
"Oh never mind, he already messed up."
-- My thoughts exactly on my playing, this is too relatable
Haha
This was sooo fun!!
You have such a great irony, I love it!! And: you play with lots of passion, intensity and musicality.. and are still very young.. keep up the good work, find maybe a great teacher and you get where you want! All the best for your bright musical future ❤️
Wow, thank you so much man!! (: I'm glad you enjoyed it haha!
You are a very good player. I appreciate your humility

I have been playing the violin for about 5 months now and would give my right leg to be able to play it anywhere near as decently as you did, well done!

I was only 'idiot' enough to play the 2nd movement for my 7th grade exam (AMEB), many years ago. 😊
I should learn from smart people like you (:
@@RubsViolin No, you have more talent ability than I could hope for. Decades later I don't have the confidence that I did have & now am trying to keep up my enthusiasm to keep playing (viola in our local orchestra).
I wonder where you are now in your violin journey
Yeah, me too
You played VERY well
Thank you SO much! (:
I'm a pianist who mainly accompanies violinists studying in the conservatory. There are a few idiots who have tried to play it with me. They mostly fall flat on their face. I found your performance quite good. Keep it up! The violinists get their revenge on me when we play the Franck sonata! 😂
Haha, thanks so much man (:
Hey, it's really not that bad! I learned this concerto 4 years ago when I was 14, and I'm pretty sure I would have performed a lot worse. I mean, I did play quite well in my bedroom and even made a recording with a piano accompaniment, but in front of a live audience? I'm dead. So keep it up, man! Never stop playing please!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your words, and well done, playing Mendelssohn, even in your bedroom, quite well is really an amazing achievement! You must also never stop playing ok
@@RubsViolin It's always very inspiring and encouraging to see other young people tackling classical music, because it's so underrated these days! Ya know, I also watched your "Por Una Cabeza" and I loved it so much that I've decided to pick it up one day--I didn't know that such a nice piece existed before. Yes, I'll never stop playing as well, Lord willing!❤Looking forward to another of your classical performances!
You should change the title to "Wannabe Clown Plays Mendelssohn Violin Concerto."

Thanks, I always wondered what Mendelssohn would sound like played on a boerewors roll
Well now you do😂
Sounds pretty amazing to me! I don't know the piece though, hilarious self critique 🤣, well done!
Tysm man (:
6:15 is one of my favorite few bars in all of classical literature (of which i know a few hundred hours).
Wow, I would never have guessed that bar lol, I find that melodic line very strange actually haha
I don't think the 720S is quite cooler than the Chiron, but they're close😎
On a side note, love the Mendelssohn vc but somehow I found the intonation is a bit harder to nail then on the Sibelius one. For me at least
Edit: Wow the end was rushed😆 but we're all nervous when playing as a soloist. Just keep it up
Waaat!? Intonation harder than Sibelius😂 I'll have to try it myself to believe that then, Sibelius looks impossible man haha. Also someone knows their cars lol
@@RubsViolin Lol maybe it's just that I'm much more comfortable with late romantic concertos than older ones like Mendelssohn. Also yeah, cars and music are both my passion, I could tell you all about it😆
😂 I know people who would genuinely murder others and drink their blood, just to be able to play Mendelssohn's violin concerto in e-minor all the way through like that, with only a couple of terrible parts in between. Keep it up, this is amazing.
HAhha thx man
props to ya anyway man :D
Hahahaha this is amazing
Haha, thx man! (:
Honestly ambitious to play it in a orchestra like that but still impressive

Haha, I actually really want to play Sibelius, probably not in a long time 😂
@@RubsViolin it’s such a cool piece
@@tygrtales6319 I know, I absolutely love the opening.
hey, don't be too hard on yourself. There's always room for improvement but you did fine. You can't get perfect without going through all the stages of learning.
Thank you! Yeah, the stages take a bit of time haha
bro u could be so good if you just worked on that intonation. great job man.
Haha, still busy with like cleaning up the intonation yes, thanks man!
you are clearly no idiot and I enjoyed your performance a lot. The orchestra arent bad either.

Gracias mi amigo Los Pollos Hermanos! (;
I dont think you understand, I WOULD pay to see this performance. Now I’m far more invested in your performance because i want to see every minor improvement you make along the road to achieving what you think is a worthy performance.
Wow, thank you so much man! (:
You seem rather tense. Your intonation sadly left the building just before you started and also, you seemed a bit "too eager" to tackle some moments. Your rhythm became very erratic at times. Your octaves felt disconnected. You went for it at first but then, switched rhythm very abruptly on the 2nd passage, which I believe affected you a lot. I like it when there's some hesitation and it picks the pace, building up some dramatic phrasing. Some moments on the E string felt really good but you still seemed tense. Understandable, you are exposed in these parts. Your cadenza felt like you were just playing the notes and that's it. You said your piece in monotone and moved on. Nothing wrong with that. Again, just being picky here but a bit more expression would probably feel better. Give yourself some room to move around the phrasing so you liberate yourself and relax before the orchestra joins you. The ending started quite nicely and then, you lost your tempo. It was clear on your reaction and on your face. But you know you just need more practice. However, I will say, in the moments where you seemed more confortable with yourself, it was quite enjoyable to hear. You were never muted by the orchestra at any point, either, I could distinctly hear your violin over them, which is not an easy task.
May LingLing bless your efforts and practice. A Mendelssohn violin concerto is always a big step, lots of pressure. Take a breather before you go for it. Don't simply "send it" and end the day hoping your octaves were there, give it some delicate touches here and there and you will be golden.
Take my comment with a grain of salt, I've been spoiled by Hilary, Ray and Brett. I am curious, though, why this? Just a standard rehearsal or is there a Mendelssohn violin concerto coming soon?
Also birb
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this feedback.Yes, I will do my best lol. I'll make a music video of the final concert haha
@@RubsViolin ah there is a concert coming. Will be looking forward to it, then. Best wishes!
Thanks man (:
Is this the one that is written in E minor?
Yep
Intonation as a whole is a very difficult thing to practice. Every violinist practice intonation every day. Mendelssohn violin concerto has one of the hardest opening of all violin concertos (in my own opinion). In just one and a half bar the soloist has to join the orchestra and perform the opening melody, which is solely on the E string. Now, I personally don't know anyone who doesn't struggle with intonation, maybe Ling Ling doesn't. And I don't know if this video is supposed to be funny or what, but I think to have the courage and confidence to stand before an entire orchestra is already quite an accomplishment. He is playing out of tune, but I don't think he is panicking. That should say something. My teacher always tells me that, everyone makes mistakes when they play, especially when they're on stage. Instead of practicing to be perfect, it is much more beneficial and realistic to practice to be prepared when mistakes are made. I honestly think this guy in the video is really well-mentally prepared. He doesn't look panicked, and he doesn't let his mistakes drag him down, he just carries on.
Intonation is very hard yes, Sometimes annoying haha. But thank you for this. It's really helpful reading through the things you say!
hello lol
Play amazing lol
haha thx man

Actually I think a bit more Nigel Kennedy - Definite !

I don't know how old you are but I think you should take voice lessons as well. You may have a good tenor voice.
Plus the singing lessons will help you with intonation, phrasing and legato. But make sure you find the best possible voice teacher in your area. Joshua Bell was able to get exposed to Opera by attending great Opera performances he watched while at Indiana University when he was a teen studying violin there. That helped him with his violin playing, I am sure. Remember that violin playing is the closest thing to singing that an instrumentalist can do. Best of lucks!
Wow, that's very interesting. Thanks man (:
I'm 15 lol
@@RubsViolin You're welcome! Did you know that Joshua Bell is even married to an Opera singer, a soprano? It's interesting. So, vocally, at age 16 you could start taking voice lessons, not now because your voice may still be changing currently from treble voice to adult voice. And when and if taking voice lessons, don't over do it in terms of range development or volume acquisition for a few years because you would be too young for that. You can concentrate on finding your voice type (I think it's tenor) breath control, voice placement, text expression, legato singing, stylistic interpretation, rhythmic accuracy and constancy and phrasing. Your repertoire, besides the Vaccai and the Lütgen excercises, should be only some french chansons, some baroque arias and some german Lieder and English baroque and classical songs. By the time you're 18 you could start singing Mozart Opera arias if you did find out that your voice is appropriate for Opera. Then by age 20 you could start studying and singing the standard lyric tenor repertoire (if you are indeed a tenor, if not, then, whatever your voice type turns out to be) and full Italian and French Operas. I wish you the best of lucks!

Coordinating you left arm/hand posture with your bow arm may prove beneficial.
Do you mean like playing more in sync between the two arms?
@@RubsViolin If you are bowing on D and/or G strings, play with your left elbow inward toward your center line, and your bow arm upward to neatly clear all the other strings and deliver more power/ resonance. Your bow would be slightly elevated on the treble side of your violin. Then all of this would be the opposite on your A and E strings. G string elbow in the farthest, and Bow arm elbow the highest. your bow arm and left elbow should position this way across the fingerboard string by string. E string, the left elbow would be the farthest outward away from your center line, and your bow arm downward the most on the rebel side of your violin. Hopefully. you can envision this. It's hard without a diagram. Btw: Your playing sounds very, very good.
