tom usually it does work but only if weather is good. makes it easier for the cows to eat using less energy will take a couple of days but youll notice production is up and they dont leave much behind and enables the grass to recover and grow sooner

Would be interesting to mow half of the strip and see which gets more grazing , the mown one or the unmown. My Father says it depends on what type of grass you have. Our grass has a very heavy seed load, the seeds are the size of wheat with long tough filaments, so premowing is a big help, it chops the tough bit up and they are more likely to eat it, your grass is so fine and the seed heads so little that premowing might not do much good

    • @uptoyou100

Cows will always go for the unmown grass first.. Pre mow works well if done right.. Have to master giving the right amount

@uptoyou100 from my experience living and working on dairy farms here in nz we pre mow quite often and I've always found the cows go for the mowed stuff first as cows are lazy animals and will always go for the easy option as it takes less energy to eat the mown stuff first then the uncut stuff second

Hi Tom , a few things to bare in mind with pre mow.
Cows need to be grazing a grass only diet, any silage or buffer feed deminishes their appetite to graze.
Weather needs to be dry, also better used as a tool when you’re in a grass deficit situation and need to graze sub optimal grazing grass.
System needs to be set up and other things in place to get the desired results. Works well if done correctly.
I visited the grasstech new office in Ireland the other week, some super stuff as regards research at Moorpark.
Your welcome to visit my farm any time. Hope parlour is coming on well👍
Grazing grass requires you to measure to manage.Every days a school day.

Grasstech currently got some excellent second hand plate meters for sale at moment, might help feel your way into grazing and grass allocation side of things and then setting up your paddock size will make more sense.

Aeration aeration aeration is always key. After grazing. Allows oxygen to the roots, helps dry out a field faster, helps the Fields absorb more water, helps slurry intake better, reduces compaction from tractors and cows.

I live in the south east Ireland and I have a Fleming topper as well. What an addition to the farm. If I put my 36 cattle into a 10 acre field and like your field it catches up to them I top 1 acre a day to them. They wont eat is that day BUT within 12 hours they have it scoffed down. As you said there is a bit of work with it ut it clean the field as they are in it!! I can't wait to see how it goes for you!

Premowing is a great job. We do it the whole time especially with the drought’s and slow grass growth the last few summers. Handy to take out strong covers of grass and saves us feeding silage bales during the summer. We find you only have to give a fraction of the grass when premowing. The cows will clean the ground as if you cut it for silage. Just like grazing you just need to judge how much you give.

My experience from Ireland. Pros and cons to it,
The pro, you get the paddock cleaned up and it should grow back better quality.
Con, you are tricking the cows into eating what they would choose not to. Therefore not good for milk yield dispite what some people like to think.
Con, time, fuel, wear on machinery. You waste around the same amount of grass as topping. Also in my opinion you mowed too much and too high.
Plan A, the cows graze it and no topping or pre mowing. It can be done if you are grazing the right grass and grazing it down well. Keep working with grass tec, they can teach you.
Plan B, if a paddock gets too strong, you skip and make it into silage bales asap.
Plan C, if quality isn't right and you have to graze as you don't have enough grass to skip, you top or pre mow. Plan C should rarely be necessary, it often means you made a mistake in the grazing last rotation. Learn from it and move on.

We do pre mow a rye grass mix and we make silage from it we also do plow up all fields every five years because of a rule that says you didn't you can't plow it to grow other crops so basically you're forced to plow up your best yielding grass. Pre mowing does work for us they're always with their heads down when they're out.

The area you gave them with that grass cover I would give to my 240 cow herd. I pre mow every paddock at least once a year to clean it up. Cows need to be trained in and takes time for them to get used to it. Any grass that is left over we rake it up and take it off the field and it's just less mess then topping.. Works well in paddocks

My grandfather learned me that a cow wants to steal. So if you mowed 2 rows and they would have to steal it from under the electric fence, it might work. But maybe then you have to do twice a day, which is a lot more work. If you want to get more from fresh grass, a zero grazer might be worth looking at

Interesting video Tom, maybe you should try using the mower rather than the topper to go over the paddocks after they have grazed, heard before that a mower will cut the grass cleaner rather than “tear” it off which encourages regrowth better. Just a thought. Keep up with the experiments.

Pre mowing is a great job. We are finding it working a treat esp if you as re planning on topping after grazing for that round. Grass rebounds quicker after pre mowing than post mowing. Cows love it. They eat all the grasses rather than the lush green stuff which helps esp for the man milking. I think you just mowed too much they really need to have it cleaned up in one grazing and try keep pre mowing grass covers around the 1200-1500kg DM.

Trampling is what screws the cleaning up of pre mow, I would divide and sub divide and move the fence half way threw the grazing session if you keep them tight and reduce roaming they’ll clear up means you have to go back during the day but it works we get 100% clean out the milk is always up after it. The fibre content is higher than grazing so they fill quicker so you could feed 15-20% less area and get good results plate meter is your best friend for pre mowing

It's been a tick but I really enjoyed taking in my UA-cam class; "Farm Skills 101 w/ Tom". Thank you for my random education Tom- I'm in Pasadena CA. and farms a bit uncommon for me. Thank you for my education.

If your thinking of trying things like pre mowing, what about trying zero grazing? Would there be less mess? Or strip graze on the pre mown? Got to weigh up the time and benefits!

We used to mow roughly 3 rounds of a mower similar to yours for 130 cows similar length crop would do roughly 12 to 14 hours

The mower will have cut lower than the topper that’s y it looks messy but I’m sure u will see that the premow section will have better quality grass next time as the topper cutting higher up just allows a base of stem that is near impossible to get cows to clean out properly accurate allocation is essential to premowing working properly
