- My Lectric XP Lite bike was stolen on 07/13/2022 at 8:06 PM on Yerba Buena Lane just north of Mission St. in San Francisco, CA.
8:06 PM Bike alarm caught people’s attention enough for someone to take this video. I lock the bike lock upside down so that you can't drill through the actual lock (an even faster method than this saw nonsense). The bike needs a key to start, so he hasn’t gotten very far.
8:41 PM I learn of the theft as I'm leaving Tropisueno restaurant's patio (the music was too loud for me to hear the bike alarm or saw). The employee that took the video shared it with me.
9:01 PM I saw the guy struggling to pedal the 40+ lb. bike on 5th St up to Market St then I lost him either on Eddy or Cyril Magnin. I call 911 as I was instructed by non-emergency to do if I saw him/the bike again.
10:45 PM After filing report at TL station I saw the guy again! McAlister towards Market. He was riding so slow I ran across the street, got in front of him, and grabbed onto the front basket. He tried to get me to let go of the bike. His “girlfriend” got involved, trying to pry my hands off the front bike basket. I asked for help from a passing couple, but they were understandably overwhelmed. The thief and his girlfriend rode off towards Market (she's on a black razor scooter). The cops showed up quick for this call as it's now considered assault, although I am fine. But seriously, the guy is just riding around the TL. I bet he can't sell the bike because he doesn't have the key to start it.

If I catch somebody stealing my bike like this, it's over for them.
Maybe it's over for YOU, since thieves can carry a ton of other weapons, e.g. knives, guns, razors,... and you have absolutely zero, meaning you already lost half the battle.
They're always ready to land in jail, but with your current job, house, family, DO YOU?
Risking your life over a loss of an asset which you can get a replacement in the future, with the thought of teaching someone a lesson is not the correct way in these situations.

Not worth the risk that's most likely a 500w e bike at that. Just take the loss and build a faster bike for a cheaper price.

@@jessandson8757little tips from me, i owned e bike and e scooter for 4 years and never had issue. Make sure to register your e bike/ scooter at your local police office and they will give you a sticker so thief will know it’s registered making it harder to sell, have a gps tracker or apple tag inside the frame very well hidden, for e scooter inside the front stem.
have 2x U lock and 1 folding lock. Make sure to lock the dash system with you phone, many brands offer this. Some e bike requires a key to unlock the system too. If you have e bike, make sure to remove the battery.
Dont park ur bike overnight at a place. Make sure you shop quick. Anyway with all those tricks they will go to the next bike.

This is in SF. Bike theft and window smash & grabs are relatively common. As long as you don’t live in a city known for theft, you’ll probably be fine.
Buy a single speed cruiser with a coaster brake. It's not worth the effort riding one, not worth the effort stealing one.

this is why I use 3 locks. use 3 locks + a system that alerts you when your bike is being moved. It'll never get stolen.

@@fbyi2940 then don't bike. simple.. and there's nothing stressful about having 3 locks because you're assuming they're all chunky. Two of the locks I use are small/compact. It's clear you do not bike if you think that having to lock up your bike is "stressful". It takes 30 secs to lock/unlock all 3 of my locks. It's not that hard. And lol if you think 30 secs is more stressful than the thousands you're spending getting gas, insurance, licenses, fees, leases, maintenance. Maintenance alone on a car can take days to fix if something breaks. Meanwhile a bike takes at most 5-10 mins to fix pretty much anything and costs virtually nothing. I'm currently saving an extra $5k+/year by biking while my friends who have cars are broke.

not hard i fix these and buy broken ones in job lots most have no key you can buy a key switch for about £10 $15 and a charger for most ebikes for £60 $80

Sucks. People would prob do something, but people are afraid of getting sued. Scenario in most cases, you approach, they pull out a knife or gun. You get killed over a bike. Scenario 2, you grab a brick, rock, weapon, or even pepper spray. Can't attack first without being threatened...so it's risk being killed or sued.
In this case, more people should be allowed to carry a simple revolver pistol. People need to stop backing down like this towards thieves.

In California, these scumbags get caught in the act and they spend a couple of hours in jail. Then they get released without having to post bail. Then they get a notice in the mail with instructions on how to get the lock cutter returned to them. The criminal courts part of the justice system is a joke. We law abiding folks have to look out for one another and not give criminals an opportunity to take our stuff. That $1000+ bike should have never been left unattended.

@@Enochulate88 I love that alarm. It's meant for motorcycles, but it's easy to hide on a bicycle. Comes with a remote. It's meant to deter a thief, of course, but also to get my attention. Unfortunately, I couldn't hear it from where I was sitting (music was too loud). But, it did get the attention of the waiter who took the video, which was good since I was able to add it to the police report.
People need to be using armoured locks now, like a Litelok X or a D1000

I use three lockers. one if the strongest is "Hiplock D1000" yes it's expensive but worth it. If someone don't know this brand I recommend to own one. watch review on this locker
The design of that bike actually makes it harder to secure simply because there's no rear frame triangle but saying that there's measures that we bike owners could take to stop thieves in their tracks.
I'd say that u-lock is holding up pretty well considering but I'd add a Litelok X1 right thru the rear wheel and around those chunky rear forks. It doesn't need to be attached to the bike rack just float it to lock the bike to itself which will make it unrideable - there's NO WAY he's gonna get thru a Litelok X1 with an angle grinder that could barely cut thru the u-lock in that video. I've seen new cutting wheels broken before even one side of a Litelok X1 has cut thru and you'd definitely need two cuts to defeat it!

Read the text with the video. I'm grateful to the restaurant employee who recorded the video. I called 911 three times that day and police didn't show up until it had escalated to an assault.

One of the waiters at the restaurant recorded it. And thank goodness he did. I filed the video with the police report and recognized the thief from the video when I tracked him down later that night. Still didn't get my bike back though. Police didn't show up in time to help me. But now the guy has an assault charge, too. And with the video I'll be able to recognize him if I see him again.

personally, I would've took the risk to stopping the guy. Sure I'll be in danger but what are the odds of being murdered in public with a high footprint of people that are all around to see you trying to kill a person over a bike? At least nobody wins if it does go down.
Guy would've fucked off if people made it known that theft was frowned upon. We just let the shit happen which influences the idea that they could continue doing that shit. Cops rarely and if barely help you out in these situations. either way, since someone likes to record, at least I'll be able to provide them more charges to make a case against the thief when they do get caught.
Hate to break it to you, but there was a story about a cowboy who had a thief tied up with witnesses stealing a bike, cops arrested him, and in less than 2 days, he was released on a misdemeanor charge. BS if you ask me, but that's what soft on crime does in a liberal run country that can't figure out why people commit crimes more often and even have repeat offenders out in the streets.

I'm actually relieved that a restaurant employee recorded it since I included it in the police report, and used it to find, and confront, the thief later that night. Didn't get my bike though. It's hard to win a physical altercation with a tweaked out, pissed off, thief.
Thats a Lectric ebike. It folds into itself. Weights about 45 pounds. Gets as small as a large suitcase. Why anyone would leave it outside is insane to me. I would bring it in the office. Its a beautiful bike and the way it folds into itself has anyone taking a second look at it. Im sure any manager wont mind. It literally is art in a bike form.
As the bike owner, I locked it in a very public space, right next to the restaurant where I ate an early dinner. We ate outside, but unfortunately, the music was too loud, and we were seated on the other end of the patio. As you can see from the video, there were people walking past, but I don't blame them for not getting involved. I wouldn't want to go up against an angle grinder myself. And even if every passerby called 911, the cops wouldn't have showed. They're doing triage, focusing on assaults and murders.

I wouldn't consider owning a bike/car without fitting a GPS tracking device first. My last bike was recovered within minutes by the police because of tracking device. BUY ONE!
GPS tracker is pretty expensive and needs to be recharged a lot unless you mean a pretty cheap bluetooth tracker like an airtag, smarttag and tile. I put a bluetooth tracker hidden on my bikes.
If you weren't gonna try to stop him, at least go real close up so you get a good clean video and give it to the cops....geez.

I detest bike thieves with a passion. I am a bike rider with 4 bikes and I would have intervened. If some bystander lied and just said "Hey. That is my bike!", the thief would have ran off. To be fair though, lot of bike thieves are cracked out druggies who would stab you to death to get their $20 fix. Intervening isn't for everyone especially if one isn't in physical shape or have fighting skills. If someone was grinding away a catalytic convertor to steal it, I would also also intervene. If you record a thief and he uses the angle grinder to threaten you as a weapon, thief just increased his charges. Thieves use tools like angle grinders and hammer as perceived threats. In court, they will say "It is just a tool.". If a thief is using hand cutters on a thick cable or a hacksaw, a bystander maybe more willing to intervene.
