When Saddam Hussein held a public purge

- In 1979, Saddam Hussein publicly accused 68 of his own party members of treason. But it was a lie. A way to get rid of people he considered rivals, and who he feared could cause problems in the future.

It's difficult to find good sources online, but an interesting addition to this purge is Adnan Hamdani.
He can be found in lists of the purge but what is often missing is that he was a close friend of Saddam and was expected be second him command. It's said that Saddam personally executed him as a show of force, likely due to his opposition to the Iran war. He even grieved the loss of his friend and provided a pension for his wife.
Quite different to others that disagreed with him. The health minister who also very moderately opposed the war was tortured to death, chopped up, and delivered to his family in piece, with a funeral not allowed.
To me this shows that he clearly killed his friend for political power, even though it hurt him.
Hell of a way to kick off a purge.
I don’t know how Adnan Hamdani is, but the people on the list were working with Hafaz alassad against Saddam. Iran started that war not the other way around. Saddam was forced into it and Al Bakr wasn’t up to it and that’s why he stepped down. Look up Hussein Ali Rtha Lashukri. He was an Iranian fighter pilot that was downed and captured near Baghdad not even the border few days before the so called invasion

No it wasn’t, his favorite movie was Scarface, he even owned a real life company named after "Montana Management", the company Tony "Scarface" Montana uses in the movie as a front for his drug operation.
@@suntzuoncrack1770 Although yes, he named his company after Scarface. There's absolutely no record of Saddam saying that Scarface was his favorite movie. His family were indeed big fans of the movie though. I am inclined to believe that Saddam clearly favored The Godfather more than any other film, largely because he has publicly compared how he leads his country to the leadership displayed in the movie Godfather on two separate occasions. Godfather was also released 10yrs+ before Scarface came out and Saddam was on the come up in power when Godfather was released in 1972, it was right before he became president in 1979. Saddam attended the launch of the Godfather movie in 1972 at a film festival in Baghdad when he was deputy, and it was documented that it left a huge impression on him.
