Long post sorry Gamers (r) Just to add a layer of gray into this discussion, as people are having a hard time not seeing anything in black and white constantly: Yes, we are humans, and humans are imperfect and run on instinct and are easily manipulated into eating fast food, chips, watching prom etc because of our raptor brains that tell us that fatty food is hard to find in the world we had long before ours. The problem with the “This is just the way we are, therefore I’m consuming whatever thing and media I want” argument is that people use it as an excuse in order not to take responsibility for their actions and recognize that their actions have an indirect impact in general. It’s fine, you choose to still play Blizzard games because you are supporting other shady companies anyway, but you don’t get to shy away from the fact that you are still paying a MONTHLY subscription in order to play a VIDEO GAME. This isn’t a necessity in the same degree in which food or fruit or fuel is. You don’t speak for me when you say that Im a hypocrite for listening to Chris Brown, as I don’t split the artist from the art in the same degree that you do. We are humans with raptor brains, and in the age of the internet where the world and the individual have never been smaller it is EASY to be overwhelmed by all the choices and the things you can’t do anything about. And it is true that we have little power to change the entire world, you boycotting blizzard is not going to change the gaming industry at all. But striving to do what’s right in small bits where ever you can is what makes you a better person, and more importantly, that’s what will end up pushing the world in the right direction and make big changes happen if enough people do it together. You can either surrender to the fact that your individually unable to impact major changes, or you can choose to boycott blizzard along with others in order to try to apply some pressure on the company to make change. This is a company that had a toxic culture in which many victims were either harassed or harmed or worse. Choosing to boycott a video game company which requires a monthly subscription in order to play one of their games is not as hard for me to do as to stop eating meat products because I have a soy allergy. I know it’s wow guys, to me it is the greatest game of all time (the vanilla/classic version) but at the end of the day it’s a luxury, not a necessity. You guys shouldn’t box everyone into “we are all humans” just because you choose to pay for the game and they don’t, and you don’t get to invalidate the possibility that others stopping to sub will bring real change to the company. WowlW has just been a downhill shit show and milking cow for blizz for many years. People are sick of it and the last events was the final drop for many. Like 7 of my friends and me quit. Never looked back
When it comes to the video I must say, that while I agree with the conclusion, I do not like the idea of pointing the finger on misdeeds of other subjects, to put a justification to playing classic wow. Its like justifying driving over the speedlimit after a stop because everyone else was doing it. I like to think about the whole debate like this: Its like saying you shouldn't watch NBA games because they support china, imagine you're a big basketball fan and now changing your way of life because of coorperate and behind the scenes bullshit. If you applied that mindset to everything, then life becomes dull, since coorperate greed and shitty people are everywhere. We should not be responsible for holding Blizzard accountable for the misdeeds they have done. A sophisticated justice system was set in place to deal with this. And the difficulties that came up when it comes to recruitment have never been as bad as in the last 2 years. Edit: They will- and already got fucked for this
People actually couldn’t give less of a damn, it’s just an excuse to quit game in general. We eat animals that have not been treated well, we wear clothes that has been produced by people who are not paid well and we are screaming someone is priviliged but if we should give away our priviliges, almost no one would. All in all- we are playing the game because we simply more or less like it - simple as that.
Your apples don’t disappear after you choose which basket to put them in tho. Your money goes to a company whose only income is it’s consumers. You are their biggest stock holder and if enough of us say we don’t like X about the game or the company you get to vote with your wallet. You choosing not to do it doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. Surrendering all agency for a video game? Come on
I dont care about politics, its a game. Also i bet most companys are shady and have alot of 'disliked' stuff but they arent in the spot light so no one hears about it, thats life.
But still they are a shitty company and the product its shit too. Now. If you are enjoying the shit, go ahead, everyone have their kinks. But be mindful that your money its the one promoting all this and if more than the half of player haven't left wow already, you will not look Blizzard dragging their feet to do something... but in reality... they haven't do anything to get those players back... so... If you enjoy it... cool, keep playing it, just don't tell me that the game its good because it is not.
