I played in a High School Band, The Centaurs, in a small town west of Minneapolis, Minnesota in the mid '60s. Our main squeeze was The Astronauts, The Beach Boys and Chuck Berry. We loved playing surf music through Fender Showman's with the Tank reverb on the side. It's fun happy music and lots of people would get up dance at parties. Thanks for bringing Baja back to life!
Being from Minneapolis, it’s always been a strange hotbed for surf music, considering the only water with waves big enough to surf might be Lake Superior (if you’re keen on freezing to death). The replacements did a pretty good surf (ski) tune in “Buck Hill”
Yes, yes, more surf! Astronauts, Astroman, Shadowy Men (Even though they insist they are not a surf band.), The Shadows, etc. Lots of good instrumental music out there. Not a lot of lessons. Teach us, Adrian!
I love it when you deep dive in the theory and harmony of songwriting, as it shows us how to expand and improve our knowledge and apply it to our own playing. I'm sick of "put your finger there" only tutorials.
Learned this catchy surf song a year ago then forgot about it. You just revived it for me and your tone is outstanding. Off to grab my guitar and get straight down to business. Thank you!
Same. The Rowland S. Howard/Lydia Lunch cover to that one (SVM) is tits. Ever heard it b4? If yes, hell ya! If no, check it asap, it'll wreck you. Adrian, if perchance you see this: Rowland S. Howard version of Lee Hazlewood's 'Some Velvet Morning' would be the King Tut(orial). Either way mate, you're the greatest. Thank you for all you do, upping my patreon pledge, rock on!
I can feel the warmth of the sunshine, the waves are shaping up but not too big. It’s warm enough for just boardshorts. Think I’ll throw my board on top of my ‘57 Chevy estate (pastel blue) and cruise down to the uncrowded beach...
Great tune ! When I was in high school playing in a rock band the Astronauts from Boulder Co were one of our favorite bands to steal songs from ! I bought all of their album records, and still have them ! Glad I am a patreon member...thanks for all of your work !
I grew up in Southern California in the surf culture of the day. After college I moved to Boulder Colorado and became involved wtth a natural foods cooperative selling organic produce, dairy products and also had a bakery-deli featuring organic products. Anyway, there was a guy who was a reguilar customer named Richard Fifield who one day asked if I was ever a surfer since I seemed to look the part. I told him I was and he told me that he used to be in a band named The Astronauts who had some surfer music hits. I told heck yeah I heard of the Astronauts, they were like the theme music of many a day of surfing and nights of dancing back in the day. He told me the band was from Boulder and never actually surfed. I thought that was pretty funny considering their music was such a natural surfing sound that they never surfed or and even been to the ocean when they wrote the tunes.
Adrian thank you for covering this one. This has been one of my favorite surf songs since 1996 when I first discovered them. They, The Astronauts, The Ventures and Robert Smith of The Cure was what influenced me to buy a Jazzmaster. Mine is an AVRI 62 I bought new in 2003. You play this song perfect and not miss a beat or note.
Lee Hazlewood is something of a hero of mine and I was excited to see you working on a tune of his, a surf song no less. I love surf, but had no idea Hazlewood had written some. Apparently there's a whole album "Cruisin' For Surf Bunnies" that I need to listen to.
I you like surf music, be sure to visit the „surfer joe summer festival“ in livorno, italy this summer from june 22 to june 25 - it‘s a blast! the best surf bands from all around the world and the whole surf community will be there 😀🏄♀️
Awesome surf tune Adrian! I am really enjoying your surf tutorials. I have a request for another instrumental, though it is not a surf tune technically. The song is Tico Tico and has an incredibly catchy melody. Again thanks for posting all these amazing lessons and all the best for 2023! Cheers! 👍👍
Surfin' with the Astronauts is one of the greatest surf albums, tunes and production are awesome ! In their time, the Astronauts were an excellent live band, you can hear it here 😉
Astonaughts had a numer of cool tunes. Though most famous for his work with Nancy Sinatra Lee Hazelwood did a lot of good stuff as part of the Sill-Hazelwood productions (where Phil Spector got his start), and his solo album 'Cowboy in Sweden' is a classic.
I was 30 years old in 1997 when I first heard this in a pub in Singapore, of all places. This is second only to "Pipeline" as the greatest "surf rock" piece ever. How in the HELL did that great band not achieve national stardom? This track alone could have at least placed them at the top of the One-Hit-Wonders. I hate the American people for snubbing this while making stars of execrable acts like Jan & Dean (though I kinda like "Tennessee"), Skeeter Davis and the sheer excruciting agony that was Frankie Valli.
I was trying to decide on pickups for surf guitar, Jaguars or Jazzmasters. I think this video clinched it for me. Jazzmasters will be less work anyway.

Sounds amazing - what a great time to be alive and making music!

Any surf/instro lessons are always welcome by me. I’d love to see some Man or Astroman on here at some point. They had a great vibe.
Reverb x1000 would be a good one!

Keep the surf tutorials coming!

My older brother would play this kind of stuff back in the '60's. 👍
Yes, you can certainly hear Lee Hazlewood
I started playing guitar in 1964, I was 14. This was the third song I learned. It’s still part of of my setlist.
Learned this catchy surf song a year ago then forgot about it. You just revived it for me and your tone is outstanding. Off to grab my guitar and get straight down to business. Thank you!
You can totally hear Hazelwood's melodic sensibilities in this.
My favorite Lee Hazlewood song - Some Velvet Morning. My favorite version of that - by the Vanilla Fudge.

If you know of an uncrowded surf beach these days you better keep it to yourself (after you tell me of course)!

Drippy coolness. Now I want a Jazzmaster.
Can't stop this earworm of a riff now!!! ;-)))

Thank you. One of the records that goes with me to my desert island.
gotta love that drippy reverb sound.. combined with a Jag, pure gold not only in surf
It's a Jazzmaster

Never heard of the Astronauts before, great tune. Just looked them up on the internet, interesting to hear about them.
I also have a thing for surf music and you have all the best taste in music, another fab lesson, Thank You
Another gem! Thank you Adrian. Will definitely learn this one.
Looks like you were having fun! Excellent video and song choice.
Surfybear? Adrian, you are the best.
Great lesson. Didn't realize you had a patreon page but I'm gonna join.

Excellent lesson and wonderful reverb sound from your rig. Great to see these Instrumental Surf lessons being posted. Thank you!
Really fun tune. Thanks for the lesson and for introducing me to this song.
Loads of fun here. Thanks Adrian.
Love ACPG. Great tune selection to my ear 😉

Another great surf record was The Surf Teens "Surf Mania", great tunes and sounds too ! I bought a Jazzmaster just to cover them and the Astronauts !
Magnificent! Cheers, Adrian! This is a wonderful birthday gift!
I’ve always tried to figure Baja out but never got past the first phrase…. Thank you!

Yes, love the Cowboy in Sweden record!
You are legend! GREAT!!!
Thank you
Thanks for the education!
Really digging your surfybear. Ride on brother A. 👍✌️
excelente video me ayudo mucho :), muchas gracias
Nicely Done 🙌
Well done thank you.
Lee Hazelwood was at his peak when he wasn't singing.
(:
Very Nice! Thank you, post!!
KILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very Awesome Man 💥👍🖤🎸
Good job.
Great, such a fab teacher. Please can you teach us Scarborough Fair? it's a challenging fingerstyle :)
So cool, I’m in..
Great stuff Adrian. Check out the Blue Stingrays, if you haven't already. They were a side project for some of Tom Petty's band.

RICH FIFIELD PLAYED lead guitar on the original recording - Inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame
Very Lee ;)

Of course either would be great for surf. But I've never owned a Jag, so can't really comment further. Very happy with my JM!
You should do a tribute to the Great Jeff Beck.. Might I suggest "I ain't Done Wrong" from his Yardbird days.....
You remind me of Jim Sullivan 👍👍👍
Fun 😁👏
Like deployed 👍
😎🎙🏎✅️
Check out the Messer chups Adrian
Random Request: Sleep Well Tonight by Gene. Their first album was a beauty. Shame they never matched that first record.
!!!!!
How about some Billy Zoom?
Lee produced a bunch of stuff for Duane Eddy, so maybe nut too surprising.
This isn't Radiohead Anyone Can Play Guitar....tf
Sounded like the Shadows to me. Never liked them.
