@Marjorie Champion They wouldnt be a crew if Usopp could openly ridicule, fight, and then come back without ever apologizing. Luffy would be considered a coward. They are fighting, and risking their lives. Usopp is wrong. Not because of what he believed to be true, but he openly criticized and threatened the Captain of their vessel in front of everyone. There is no morality or right and wrong. The Captain is the boss, Usopp isn't a first mate, Zoro is. Usopp can privately confront Luffy, but he disrepected Luffy in front of everyone, which could lead them to do the same.

Thats not entirely true. Many people play their part in guiding Luffy. It depends on the situation who jumps in. In this case its about respect and a captains duty so Zoro obviously fits best. Back at Drum Island it was Vivi who told him that as a proper leader he cant just put his people at risk for his pride and ego. Robin generally plays a more mature role and is kind of a motherly figure to Luffy. Jimbei is pretty much the same in male. Not so much a father figure but a older advisor who knows the world. Luffy is pretty clueless on his own, he can use all their advice from time to time.

He emphasizes the respect Luffy deserves and the seriousness it takes to be a pirate. When he said that he’d be the next to leave if Luffy didn’t command respect it really put it all into perspective. Luffy could never risk losing Zoro and zoro could never risk losing luffy which is why he had to make sure Luffy understood his place as the only person above him that he respects the most. definitely one of my favourite scenes in the series and probably the top favourite scene of zoro. while "nothing happened" makes us realize he's ready to sacrifice his own life for luffy, this one shows that even when the captain himself has doubts, loses his way, isn't able to think straight, zoro will be there to put him together, remind him who he is and remind the rest of the crew to respect luffy as their captain, especially at times like this. his loyalty really deserves all the recognition.

Zoro's speech about Ussop shows a lot of his good qualities--has respect for his Captain and crewmates, has maturity, has some sense of good pride and honor, quiet but very observant, has control and discipline, and has leadership skills. Zoro may sometimes seem so distant from the group, but he definitely cares for all of the crew. Whoever is in danger, if he's there, he's quick to respond and protect them. He may be quiet most of the time, but if ever he needs to speak up, he has the most sense and maturity. That's why he's a badass character.

      They never argue.
Unlike a majority of Shonen/Seinen main protagonists (Goku being the biggest in my experience), Luffy is self-aware enough to know he's not the smartest tool in the shed and his heart is very big. He knows he *needs* the guidance of an older more experienced figure if he wants to be the best he can be as the Pirate King. That includes being made to make difficult decisions, as well as accepting his more negative feelings.
He *does* want things to go back to the way they were before with Ussop because that's the child part of him. However, he can't forget the fight between them over Going-Merry, especially since Ussop accused him of not caring about her at all. Ussop disrespected him since we saw in Merry's funeral how much it hurt Luffy to know why he had to bury her. If Ussop was a true friend, he would have known that when Luffy told him the news and not take him smiling and being "casual" seriously. Seriously, a "professional" liar like Ussop couldn't see a lie right in front of him.
Zoro is well aware of Luffy's habit of hiding his feelings behind his smile and as such is giving Luffy permission to be angry and hurt, even resentful of Ussop's backstab, by giving this speech. It's not just a speech on the unspoken rules of authority when it comes to being Captain, it's about accepting your negative feelings are valid. They can't be friends with someone who will hurt them again unless the "criminal" makes an effort to atone for the mistake that hurt them. And Luffy will be no better than Ussop if he lets Ussop walk all over him.

That’s not the problem Zoro had with Luffy tho nor was he complaining about Luffy general attitude, as he said during this discussion, he doesn’t care if Luffy is childlike and joyful as a person, the problem is not demanding respect as a captain, Luffy’s is very lenient when it comes to his crew and yes he doesn’t mind being hit and screamed to when he does stupid stuff, but there’s a big difference between being hit by Nami and what Usopp did which was a huge blown to the emotional and moral state of Strawhats as a whole, what Usopp did was disrupting everyone when they needed to be united the most, and if one single crewmate can just walk away when things get bad and come back without any repercussions, what stops the rest from doing the same?
Out of all people Zoro respects Luffy the most, and he is frustrated that his captain isn’t making himself to be respected when these sort of things happens, that’s the issue here.

Robin abandoned the group to save them from CP9 and from herself
Sanji basically sold himself to Big Mom and his Family in order to protect the crew and the Baratie from the fury of his own family.
And Franky stole them before being even part of the crew, and even then he helped them out to save Robin and made up from robbing them by using the legendary wood he bought with the money to build them another ship.
All of them did their “””betrayals””” for selfless reasons, meanwhile Usopp deserted the group for entirely egoistical reasons.
And Luffy is not “casually getting rid of” Merry, they have already been told by professional shipwrights that the thing was not going to survive another voyage, Usopp was already conscious of this from the very beginning, he knew the ship was beyond salvation but the projected himself into the ship and later on forced her to continue sailing, something that WAS putting the ship under a lot of pain since it is confirmed that the thing had a soul, so Usopp was neglecting the pain he was going to put into Merry by trying to make her continue sailing.
All because he got his pride hurt again and again, he never thought about Merry or Kaya, he thought about himself the entire time, that’s the issue with him here and why he needed to apologize for putting ALL of the crew through turmoil because of his hubris.

What I really love about the whole situation in general is just how human it felt.
When looking at the group as a whole, Usopp was already the weakest and knows himself to be a coward (he is incredibly Brave, but he doesn’t think so). When his mistakes and inability to do good in this arc started piling up, his insecurities reach their peak and his intrusive thoughts of being left behind for being useless took over. He heard and understood well and clear that Merry was no longer a viable ship anymore, but he projected his problems onto it because at the end of the day, he served no big and obvious purpose on Luffy’s crew. He ain’t a Captain, Second in Command, Cook, Navigator, or Doctor and he was barely a shipwright, so if he couldn’t do anything right or be a strong fighter, why keep him on your crew?
It’s so relatable it really hurt when the fight was decided on, but made it all the better when they reconciled.

It’s weird to consider how, regardless of circumstances, 4 of the main 9 crew members left the crew at one point or another. Also 2 of the 5 that never left almost left at one point, being zoro (during his fight with luffy during the alabasta arc) and franky (who threatened to leave during dressrossa although I know it wasn’t serious). It’s interesting to think about how the only ones who never left or even almost left, besides luffy, were brook and chopper.

    • @Rexaura888
      @Rexaura888 2 роки тому +27

-Zoro never intended to leave the Straw Hats except for the moment in this clip, and that was more so to show how dead serious he was at this matter. Of the virtues he represents in the group (Luffy being freedom for example. Sanji, compassion), he is loyalty, and no one has ever questioned Zoro’s loyalty once. That Luffy vs. Zoro fight was the only inner crew fight that wasn’t a test of resolve or due to an argument. It was a matter of context, and Luffy had none, thinking that Zoro had gone mad and cut down all the people who welcomed, them not knowing that the entire town was a facade and everyone in it were bounty hunters of Baroque Works. It was never really that serious of a fight seeing how Nami was the one to break them up.
-Nami was never truly a Straw Hat until she was free from Arlong. She even said back in Orange Town that what they had was just a working partnership and that she wouldn’t become a pirate. However she was given the number three as the third crew member so it could be argued that she was a Straw Hat as far back as Orange Town.
-Usopp is the only official crewmate who left of his own volition out of a major disagreement with Luffy. At the same time Usopp was also the only crewmate that Luffy did not formally invite apart from Robin. Luffy just assumed Usopp was going to join them, and the “mutiny” was potentially in the works with how Usopp kept saying early on that he would be their captain.
-Sanji only left to try and protect his crewmates and later Zeff. That’s why he had to act cold towards Luffy and Nami when they first tried to rescue them at Whole Cake Island since his family was watching on and would know if he betrayed them. It’s pretty much the same reason Robin left the Straw Hats.
-Vivi is the only unofficial crewmate with the number 5.5 and left of her own volition. She may as well be a crewmate though seeing how she and Luffy did fight each other in Alabasta.
-Chopper was going to turn the Straw Hats down until Luffy told him that he’s one of them. About the closest he got to leaving the crew though he wasn’t a crewmate then.
-I wouldn’t say Robin was really a Straw Hat until after Eines Lobby. Of the crew she was the only one to basically force her way into joining the crew, and they were a means to her end much as Nami saw the crew initially.
-As you pointed out Franky’s threatening to leave was kind of a joke. It shouldn’t really count.
-Though he never officially left, Usopp, Chopper, Nami, Robin, and Franky all thought that there was a chance Brook wouldn’t reunite with the crew since he had his new life as the Soul King. You could argue that this was the closest Brook got to leaving though he always had intended to rejoin the Straw Hats after all they’d done for him after saving his shadow and telling him about Laboon.
-Jinbe hasn’t had the chance to leave the Crew, though I doubt he’s going to threaten to leave or be forced to even though he’s left both the Warlords and the Big Mom Pirates. He’s about as loyal to Luffy as Zoro is after what they’ve been through at Impel Down and Marineford, though theirs was a serious fight over how to handle Hody compared to Luffy vs. Zoro even if it was ended by Robin in a similar manner to how Nami ended Luffy vs. Zoro.
-Of the crewmates, the only one Luffy has not formally fought are Nami (though her stabbing herself and then asking for Luffy to save her in Cocoyashi Village could be sorta like a fight), Chopper, Robin (though he didn’t honor her request to die in Alabasta), and Brook.

Also, I know that franky and zoro leaving was not serious, that’s why I said that it wasn’t in my comment. @@ryanlong9800 I don’t see why you’re not counting Jinbe at this point. He’s been officially sworn in since Wano as the helmsman. And I also brought up two cases where you might even say that Chopper and Brook “left”, but that got either glossed over or disregarded.

    • @ryanlong9800
      @ryanlong9800 2 роки тому

@@Rexaura888 I didn’t count jinbe because I said “the main 9” as in referring to the 9 members of the crew that have been there since before the time skip and have been a part of the crew for many many years. In comparison, jinbe was sworn in near the last part of wano and therefore his part in the crew hasn’t really had time to sit with the viewer, especially not in comparison to the rest of the crew which is why I didn’t include him in the main 9 that had been the crew until then. And the reason why I didn’t mention brook and chopper is because brook not coming back was never true nor did brook even ever intend this at all but rather momentary speculation by the other crew mates so it’s hard to call that relevant to this scenario. And chopper, unlike nami and robin, was only going to turn luffy down before he joined the crew, not after. Therefore you can’t really call that him leaving or coming close to leaving because you can’t leave a crew you’re not yet a part of, even superficially, and is therefore hard to argue that it’s relevant to the conversation. You even point these things out in your comment so Im kind of confused why you brought up those moments in the first place.

@@ryanlong9800 So speculation/concern doesn’t count, yet joking about leaving does?
And your reasoning regarding Jinbe is just as odd to me. So what if it was PTS? Fact is here and now he’s a crewmate. He’s in Film Red, and he’s been featured in every Color Walk since. He’s as much of a crewmate as the previous eight (nine if you count Vivi which you seemingly don’t) even if he hasn’t been there for as long.

Luffy basically was undermining his own pain and grief to let Usopp in, Zoro basically validated Luffy’s negatives feelings, that IT IS okay for them to be upset at Usopp for all the suffering the brought to Luffy and his crew.
Luffy has shown time and time again that he puts all the pain of the world on his shoulders and he doesn’t ever complaint about it, this time around Zoro couldn’t have it, he could not stand watching is captain having so little care and respect for himself, when Zoro is the first one to put his own life above’s Luffy, it was simply not fair for the crew and specially for Luffy to pretend they weren’t hurt by Usopp.

Zoro before timeskip -epic speeches for luffy that he's not going to lose again.
-Teaches luffy that captain's decision should needed to be respect by its crewmembers.
-Sacrificing himself for his captain and his crew.
Zoro after timeskip -reminds luffy not to be careless about new world.
-warns luffy about not underestimating the yonko.
-Sacrificing himself once again by tanking yonko's combination attacks.

That’s big. No one on the crew has ever known it without Zoro present; he made as well be first mate for all they know. To have him be so serious at such a critical time really does hold the crew together. Also, sounds like a high bar, ‘sincere apologie first,’ but he also knows Usopp will swallow his pride and do it, so it’s also a teaching moment for Usopp as well

And if the captain let's his own crew get away with disrespecting him, how should any of them be expected to respect him? This is such a great scene and has stayed with me for a while. Its a great lesson about respect to not just your leader but for your group in general. The fact that usopp did not want to apologise and just come back like nothing happened is when I was zoro thinking you can't trust people who take advantage of you and not say sorry about it. It's like a friend of mine who I was friends with before kept making mistakes and said sorry but clearly didn't mean it because he kept doing over and over again. If he was sorry then he would make an effort. He would stay that way but that's when I decided to completely cut ties with him because you can't trust someone who does bad things but doesn't mean it if they do all the time like nothing happend in the past. It's staff like this that makes One piece much deeper and more amazing then people give it credit for. People say its too long or repiptive but I think it's long but worth it in my opinion because of scenes like these.

The most concerning thing is “If you, the man above me, show weakness, the next one to leave the gang will be me”
I keep wondering about Zoro having Color of the Supreme King, and yet he’s loyal to Luffy. All his signature moves seem quite ominous as well. There is love there, of course, but I feel like if Luffy were to come between Zoro and his ambitions, we could have a VERY dangerous antagonist. It’s highly unlikely because Luffy wants everybody to follow their dreams, but what if he unwittingly did something to keep Zoro from claiming his goal? Zoro has said many times “I swear I’m going to cut him one day” and it’s played for jokes but we’ve seen characters predict the future many times by making jokes as well. Luffy drew Franky before he met him. He also drew an accurate picture of a Fishman on Fishman island. Don’t even get me started on Usopp’s predictions. Words have power in universe and I’ll leave it at that.

@@Ares99999Because those times where completely different to what Usopp did.
Nami, Sanji and Robin “betrayed” and abandoned the crew out of obligation and trying to protect the rest. Vivi… I don’t know what she did wrong, being part of Baroque Works? She didn’t really did any damage only being an inconvenience.
But Usopp straight up disrespected Luffy not only has his captain but as his best friend, he put his own hubris above all reasoning and undermined the suffering everyone else had for the merry, SPECIALLY Luffy’s.
Usopp walked all over the crew, this is a much worse offense than Nami stealing the ship out of necessity to save her hometown, she did it out of her commitment to save lives, Usopp did what he did out of pure egoism and pettiness, that’s the difference and why Zoro is demanding for him to apologize.
