It's a bit like practicing an instrument - I KNOW that I need to practice the Hanon exercises on piano to strengthen by individual fingers and their coordination so that I can play more complex pieces more consistently, but it's a relatively boring thing to practice so I often drift to other pieces that are more interesting but less useful for shoring up my basics.
