  • MotoMan flies out to the desert to drive the all new, 227 HP Kia Sportage Hybrid. As he drives the Palms to Pines Highway, he learns, like the Hyundai Tucson, the Hybrid is better than the 2.5 gas version of the Kia Sportage & Hyundai Tucson, but also spots a theme about the impact of technology - in this case electrification on money.

    11:45 That doesn't bother me so much with auto climate control because I "set it and forget it" at my desired temp, and the car does the rest, so 99% of the time its just on radio controls and I do love having radio knobs close at hand.

    I think what you've actually got in that model is the in-between screen option, with the 12.3" infotainment screen, but the dash display is the smaller one with fixed speed and tach readouts, but behind a piece of plastic that makes it look like a continuation of the other screen. The higher end option is dual 12.3" screens side by side, and looks quite similar, but the dash instrument appearance is different (simulated analog gauges).

    1:28 Its actually not the less weight that makes the big fuel economy difference, its because Kia's FWD are always significantly higher fuel economy in part because the FWD ones are quite a bit lower to the ground than the AWD ones too, which helps aerodynamics. You can tell its that because even on the 2.5 naturally aspirated one, a loaded up FWD trim with the giant pano roof and everything still gets better fuel economy than the lower trims in AWD.

      My first long commute drive today. Overall i think it has just enough power. I have the hybrid awd so it sits high and i feel a bit lean when turning. Relatively quiet ride. The turbo kick makes for a pretty decent passing power. Turbo kick is a bit laggy though. Id say about a second after you press the accelerator but i think only if your are cruising on the pedal. One of my complaints would be some occasional gear engagement when i often release the gas pedal and engage it frequently during traffic. There is also a lag when coming to a stop and quickly accelerating back again. Basically it feels like the intiial acceleration seems always handled by the electric motor and then it kicks in the turbo.

    My three most used HVAC buttons are visible in a hard form button on my dashboard of this unnamed Ford product. So that combo screen leaves those always there but the one that I don’t have is that auto. It is customizable how aggressive it is at being auto. Most of us just want a set temperature and the “auto” customizable part brilliantly does that. So I argue the buttons you need the most are readily available to you but you use them far less than I use my mechanical buttons which keeps your eyes on the road more. This is not your mothers auto temperature from the 80s. 💯

    good and thorough review. They are not made in my home state of Georgia however. Hybrids are made in Korea according to dealers I have contacted all over the country. One has to order from the factory and be prepared to wait for at least six months. On top of that dealers want the market adjustment above MSRP. They are holding the cards right now.

    • @Worldly876
      @Worldly876 Рік тому

      Exactly, which is why the Tucson Hybrid is a better pick right now (end of 2022). It's stupid to pay $3K-$7K over MSRP + dealer processing fee + non negotiable dealer add on for a car that will depreciate a lot in a year. In my area I can get a Tucson for about MSRP or a Sportage for $5K over MSRP (assuming processing fee and dealer add ons are the same). Is the Kia a better vehicle, sure but is it worth the premium. Also note the Tucson Hybrid is rated higher by Consumer Reports both on the road test and overall rating.

      Wow, that is crazy. I am in the SF Bay Area and all of the dealers here are charging $5k over. That is pretty outrageous also, but basically all of the vehicles are like that right now. Toyota RAV4 hybrids are 6500 or more over, and the used 2021 Rav4 hybrids with 25-40k miles on them are still $5k over original MSRP! It is crazy, so I am likely going to bite the bullet on the 5k overage, since I can’t wait for 6 months for it to improve.

    • @toyanucci
      @toyanucci 2 роки тому +12

      It depends on what city you're in but there're still dealerships that do MSRP. Don't let them trick you into believing that everyone is doing it. If you're not in a rush, call around and consider even dealerships in a nearby state as it's still cheaper to fly and drive back than literally giving away $5000 which is about 4 year+ worth of gas money which negates the savings you're planning to get by going with a hybrid.
      Every and I mean EVERY dealership I have been to that tells me there's a car shortage and that's why they are adding ridiculous fees, have all been calling and emailing and texting me trying to get me to come back and work out a cheaper price. If cars are so scarce and it's a sellers market, why are they running me down weeks after I went in for a simple test drive?
      Don't let them fool you.

The Seltos I felt was overpriced for what it is. The Telluride is a value rock star but two years in and you still can't get one. @@GOINFINITI European taxes on fuel are significantly higher than the United States. Gasoline is taxed more than diesel, which is the opposite of the U.S. as well. Germany for example shows $2.83 per gallon for gas and $2.03 per gallon for diesel just in tax. Whereas in the United States, the most expensive state of California charges is $0.51 per gallon for gas and $0.39 gallon of diesel, plus $0.18 per gallon for federal tax on both. So Europe has on average 3-4 times higher tax on fuel.

    I've had my Kia for over a week and it's incredible and I love it. I couldn't get my hands on a Prestige but the EX itself is fantastic. It's modern and not as expensive as the RAV4 or the Mazda cx 5 (with the markups). Plus it's 2023 which is a plus and it just seems more modern than the current vehicles available. I also hate how you have to pre-order a rav4 because they are so high in demand.
