I heard Warren’s distinctive voice while watching Longmire. I never knew he covered the song. I was blown away. Stunningly poignant version. It is gut wrenching and wonderful at the same time when you consider what he was going through. Warren was a musical gift to us and continues to be. And yes I do try to enjoy every sandwich. RIP Warren.
TOTALLY AGREE... THAT is exactly where I first heard it.. opening credits of the series last episode... it set the tone for that episode so well!! It grabbed me by heart... great song for the Longmire storyline closure!!
Agreed... lost my Dad about 6 years ago.. miss him so much.. but I think back about all the stuff we did together.. fishing, going to Baseball games, going for walks in the woods... all the stuff I get to do with my son now. I'm
Binged Watched every episode of longmire after getting two teeth pulled (wasn’t hector) I can’t get this song out of my head! Best show I’ve seen in years.
Lucian was one of the best characters in Longmire. Truly a man of honesty and integrity. I only wish he had been given more screentime. R.I.P. Lucian, you went out like a man, you old bastard.
Glad to see so many are coming to this great cover based on Longmire. One of the rare times that a cover is superior to the original (and I like the Winwood version).
It used to seem to me That my life ran on too fast And I had to take it slowly Just to make the good parts last But when you're born to run It's so hard to just slow down So don't be surprised to see me Back in that bright part of town I'll be back in the high life again All the doors I closed one time will open up again I'll be back in the high life again All the eyes that watched me once will smile and take me in And I'll drink and dance with one hand free Let the world back into me And on I'll be a sight to see Back in the high life again You used to be the best To make life be life to me And I hope that you're still out there And you're like you used to be We'll have ourselves a time And we'll dance 'til the morning sun And we'll let the good times come in And we won't stop 'til we're done We'll be back in the high life again All the doors I closed one time will open up again We'll be back in the high life again All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in And we'll drink and dance with one hand free And have the world so easily And oh we'll be a sight to see Back in the high life again We'll be back in the high life again All the doors I closed one time will open up again We'll be back in the high life again All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in And we'll drink and dance with one hand free And have the world so easily And oh we'll be a sight to see Back in the high life again
I was so suprised to hear this at the end of Longmire. What an awesome treat to hear this song on one of my favorite shows ever. Someone involved was obviously a fan, with the lawyers guns and money reference early in the series.
Longmire is why I looked up the song. Surprised to see that Steve Winwood wrote it. I am a Vietnam vet and have had that stigma for the last 48 years. I think Warren Zevon's version suites me much better.
Never heard this version before either. Great song that lends itself to different interpretations. Warren certainly puts his indelible stamp on it in this version. You feel his heartbroken tenderness in it. I miss him in waves, returning to listen deeply to him every few months.
The beginning of the longmire episode w this song brings me to tears every time. Sheriffs getting old and alone and so many around him have died and all this you can feel in those few scenes. Guess its the cowboy way
I loved Steve Winwood's recording of this song--it was one of my favorite "top 40" tunes from the '80's and '90's--but this version is a masterpiece. Zevon lends such depth and heartbreak to the original via his raw, simple rendition. Stunning. Makes me cry every time I hear it. And I'm about out of tears.
Heard this on local college radio the other day and immediately perked up to say "WTF is this?!" This is truly an amazing rendition and IMO, much more heartfelt and vulnerable than the already-fantastic original. RIP Warren and thank you for sharing your tremendous talents with this world!
When you Winwood sing this, there's no doubt that he will be back in the high life again. He sings it straightforward and defiantly. When Zevon sings it, it takes on a more wistful, "I wish it were so" tone, one of nostalgia and bit of regret (he hopes she's still out there, but ...) Either one is good. Which one a person prefers may say more about the listener than the performer.
I agree. Winwoods version sounds like some executive who had to sell his summer home in Paris but will have it back in the next quarter. Zevon's sounds more like someone who is down in a low place, lookin up towards the light that is just out of reach
Was listening to the Winwood version and enjoying it, then remembered this version and had to give it another listen too. Not sure which I'd choose if I had to, but as somebody once said, the nicest thing about some choices is you don't have to make 'em :)
I like the theme of redemption in this version of the song. He really made it his own. He gave it a melancholy, world-weary feel but it's like, you know HE KNOWS that he'll be on top again, whether it's in this life or the next.
Six years later, so I don't know if you'll read this, but I heard it as something like when George took Lenny out into the woods to shoot him, telling him about the rabbits again the whole way.
I think the song is wistful, but not resigned or certain of no real hope. I agree with the wistful part of these comments but not the resigned part. Yes Zevon left too soon but I don’t think he’s singing like that. Just my personal opinion.
"I courted death my entire existence on that beautiful blue ball called earth; just look at many of my lyrics. I'm not sure I fully appreciated wearing that human costume, but now I see that I wrote some fine songs and made some nice friends. I knew "death" was always hot breathe on my neck and I referenced it many times. But now, in this expanded version of myself, of course I know there is no death. The lesson: do what you want. Tuning In Films You speak for my God of Music with depth and feeling...you see through the "Bad Boy" persona to the kind, gentle, utterly brilliant spirit beneath. Warren still lives, you know, for gods and Legends never die...and Warren is BOTH!!!
I love and miss Warren .. often late at night when I face my own self .. he allows me to love myself and forgive .. something we all need on occasion .. be well Mr Z.
I've been kind of an occasional Warren Zevon fan, so I didn't know about this cover until about a week ago. I've listened to it over and over, and sung it in my best approximation of Warren's voice.
Just watched this episode. My buddy who is true friend and A Cowboy that now lives in Wyoming sent me the series 2 weeks ago for my 66th bday. We're of couple of old sods, thank you Clint Eastwood, but are both New Yorkers deep down. What a version 🏈💛♥️🇺🇸😉🐕🎸😔❣
Actually, Warren recorded Back in the High Life on his "Life'll Kill Ya" album in 2000 and was not diagnosed with his terminal mesothelioma cancer until 2002
Thanks for sharing the facts. I was going to say that myself. I didn't even know about this cover until I heard it on the radio tonight. I absolutely love it! We lost Warren Zevon way too early. I only saw him once but it was a solo show at the Bayou in Washington, DC. The stage at an arched proscenium extending out into the audience with what I recall as being 14 guitars on stands placed around that arch. And he played each and every one of during the show. I need to look up when that was. I will never forget it. I can picture that stage and all those guitars even now, decades later. 🎸 ❤️ I looked it up and it was in February 1996. People have posted a set list which I really appreciate. I'm so happy to have been able to attend this show way back when.
I'm hearing the true meaning of a familiar song for the first time. Zevon's version reminds me of someone standing out in the cold, shivering while looking into the window of a big mansion where people are feasting around a table. The longing and sadness in this version are heartbreaking, and beautiful.
Love how certain words, poetic verse can mean many things over a lifetime, even to the writer, Am sure I first heard this as "HIGH" and smiled as i was getting high and HIGHER! and with death and near death and serious memory issues it felt another way..."And I had to take it slowly just to make the good parts last"---"But when you're born to run it's so hard to just slow down" and with now many yrs sober and drug free it came full circle and even with warren Zevon doing it as a bit of dying declaration gave new "life" to it:)"All the doors I closed one time will open up again" And as I know from reading and hearing words, verses and now with my own Poems the beauty can be in how the words or lyrics are always open to the reader or listener:) 'PEACE TAKES PRACTICE" Thanks Rick
I seldom reply to posts, but as an "old" Warren Z fan, I would take your tears and cherish them .. and give them back to you as a taste of tomorrow, at just the right time .. **hug** ,, be well Margaret T ..
When Steve Winwood sings it, it feels like it’s someone else’s dad’s song. Those guys own car dealerships and get high school cheerleaders pregnant. Warren Zevon is more like my dad. He’s lying to us. It’s not going to get better. They write new laws and throw the book at our kind. Zevon is doing his best not to tell us that life is one misfortune after another, culminating in a painful, lonely death and no words exist to make sense of it.
YOUR MUSIC, SOUL, LOVE OF HUMANITY, WILL LIVE ON IN THE HEARTS OF ALL WHO CAN SEE THE ENERGY THAT TICKS IN THE RHYTHM OF OUR BEATING HEART WITH YOURS TWINKLING DOWN ON THE UNIVERSE.
winwood's version is my favorite song, but i loved hearing warren's version and seeing the video. bittersweet considering his early death from lung cancer but a fine rendition from a wonderful talent.
WZ is the only musician I know of that can make music so painful-and beautiful @ the same time! One of my faves is Accidentally Like A Martyr-from Preludes-I call that "The Caustic Version"
Thanks for uploading; I've always loved this song but this cover offers a little more heart. Warren Z. was a great singer/songwriter in his own right and he left us way too soon
I really love Warren's interpretation of this song. This is superior to all of the others. Thank you very much for posting this great song by WZ. He was extraordinary in so many ways.
why rip fictional characters...its peter weller and hes very much alive....and boy do I love all his guest spots he does on shows and in movies...he's great..great voice..and smart as hell.
I've never heard this version. Part of Warren's great artistry is that he can take a song and make it his own. i.e. while singing. I don't want to start up another kid rock debate. I have yet to even hear ONE kid rock song. Guess I'm a dinosaur. This song is so haunting and full of emotion. A complete different spin than Steve Winwood did. I miss Warren so much it is hard to listen to this, it is so beautiful. Thank you for posting this!
As Warren himself said. I lived like Jim Morrison and then continued to live another 30 years! As the saying goes. I have forgotten more about fun then most people will ever know. Enjoy yourself to the point of punishing others!
You can really hear the change in Warren's lifestyle from listening to his early works, and then listening to a later album. It's crazy, I dunno why he had to leave us this soon but we can keep him here with his music.
Whenever I hear this version, I picture Warren Zevon singing to a mirror and making a promise to himself. I'm currently making a sandwich and I'm gonna make it last a while. God bless you Warren. Thanks for the upload. Take it easy.---Kirk
Warrem Zevon's version seems to make the words match with the music more effectively. I always liked the song, but didn't give it any thought til I heard this
It's just my humble opinion, but Warren lived a life as large if not larger than most in the music industry. His lyrics proved that!! Why????? you may ask yourself? Well simply "Meditate on it"!!,, that's what Johnny Cash would suggest! It is because he wrote songs highlighting his Life Experiences, including significant historical portrayals of blood guts and Glory and a large dose of examples of women sharing their female charms with him quite unabashedly. Long Live Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner and also the memory of The Immortal excitable boy!! oh yeah I think he was a yinzer from Pittsburgh PA before there was a recognizable term describing him. Letterman and Paul Snyder certainly got him...R.I.P. buddy
There sure are a lot of comments mentioning Longmire. Me too. I had no idea WZ had covered this till a moment ago when I started up episode 6 of the final season. I guess we all missed "Life'll Kill Ya." I've been to a lot of concerts in my life, and seen a lot of artists perform. Couldn't see them all, and missed some that I regret, including Warren Zevon
ditto...I've been to a lot of concerts in my life, and seen a lot of artists perform. Couldn't see them all, and missed some that I regret, including Warren Zevon
Music in a show or .ovie is important. Movie soundtracks used to be half the enjoyment, but in the mid to late 80's, that changed. Since that time, there's been 2 really good "music for the scene " scenario's- this one - longmire with warren zevon's version of back in the high life, a d the ending scene in lethal weapon (2 i believe) in the shipyard with knocking on heavens door playing quietly in the background
I feel a desire to express the need deemed so necessary to thank the proverbially undaunted emotion either a. Kindness or not it is well deserved to praise his choice and ofhers which might dese0rve the thanks .even if thanks is sucficient for the effort of what high life tribute is so deserved. Hope faith virtue. courage commitment ...... And Sacrifice. all that was lost is not forgot. either believer in the likeness of those liked by the beauty of the londons lsst nut not lesst honor is and all is not lost..

Happened to me last night. Had to stop Longmire and find out who was singing. Was surprised, then not, to find out who. Wonderful, wonderful, version.
He wrote it !

Didn't know that he has left us. I, also, saw this on LONGMIRE and I love it!!!
While watching Longmire I heard this song and never knew that Warren Zevon sang this . Best version ever and played on an awesome show . ✌️🌮🌮🍻
Warenis he man!
Played this song at my father's funeral. He was a kind, smart and caring man. Everytime I hear this I will always think of him. Miss you dad.
I lost my father a few years back and it is tough. Just remember the good times that you shared and try to live a good life.
Agreed... lost my Dad about 6 years ago.. miss him so much.. but I think back about all the stuff we did together.. fishing, going to Baseball games, going for walks in the woods... all the stuff I get to do with my son now. I'm

Love the show Longmire , just wanted to agree ,
You should have seen Tim Whatley...
One of my favorite songs in the original, but this version brings out emotions that were not there in Winwood's version. God, I miss Warren.
This was the best moment in any show ever. Longmiire.

It used to seem to me
That my life ran on too fast
And I had to take it slowly
Just to make the good parts last
But when you're born to run
It's so hard to just slow down
So don't be surprised to see me
Back in that bright part of town
I'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
I'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched me once will smile and take me in
And I'll drink and dance with one hand free
Let the world back into me
And on I'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again
You used to be the best
To make life be life to me
And I hope that you're still out there
And you're like you used to be
We'll have ourselves a time
And we'll dance 'til the morning sun
And we'll let the good times come in
And we won't stop 'til we're done
We'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
We'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in
And we'll drink and dance with one hand free
And have the world so easily
And oh we'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again
We'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
We'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in
And we'll drink and dance with one hand free
And have the world so easily

I was so suprised to hear this at the end of Longmire. What an awesome treat to hear this song on one of my favorite shows ever. Someone involved was obviously a fan, with the lawyers guns and money reference early in the series.
this version fit Longmire perfectly. Best end of a series I've ever seen....peace
This is an absolutely incredible rendition of Steve Winwood's classic. It stands completely on its own.

I loved Steve Winwood's recording of this song--it was one of my favorite "top 40" tunes from the '80's and '90's--but this version is a masterpiece. Way underrated artist. Some truly great tunes. Life’ll kill ya.
This person has an uncanny way of relaxing me even when everything around me including myself are collapsing. I'm missing this man.
Master class in how to take a decent song and turn it into the essence of life itself.
Heard this on local college radio the other day and immediately perked up to say "WTF is this?!" This is truly an amazing rendition and IMO, much more heartfelt and vulnerable than the already-fantastic original. RIP Warren and thank you for sharing your tremendous talents with this world!
Longmire brought me here to. I had never heard this version, as soon as I heard his voice I knew it was him. Great song, great singer.
Me too.
This round’s for Lucian. Cheers-
So good it makes me want to cry.
This version is better than the original. Heard this version on Longmire, never get tired of listening to this song.
I heard this version on Longmire. Surprised it was not released as a country single version. Amazing version of a classic.
I really loved this interpretation of High Life. It has a way of reaching in and touching your soul. Well done Warren Zevon, well done.
Warren finally got the time to sleep. RIP Warren Zevon.

I agree. Winwoods version sounds like some executive who had to sell his summer home in Paris but will have it back in the next quarter. Zevon's sounds more like someone who is down in a low place, lookin up towards the light that is just out of reach

pretty accurate dude 👍
Winwood's version makes me smile. Zevon's version makes me smile and cry.

Beautiful!
Miss you Warren. Hope you're dancing in the morning sun!
1:00 WOW I was literally thinking how great it would have been for Johnny Cash to cover this song and them BAM. You're still with us Johnny
Miss Warren soo much! He is a legend of rock 'n roll also.
It's crazy, I dunno why he had to leave us this soon but we can keep him here with his music.
almost as if he knew...
You said it Bro!
simply blows me away ...
2021 I’m in that high life 💙💜❤️
Great take on Stevie Winwoods hit.
Whenever I hear this version, I picture Warren Zevon singing to a mirror and making a promise to himself. I'm currently making a sandwich and I'm gonna make it last a while. God bless you Warren. Thanks for the upload. Take it easy.---Kirk
Whoa I've been a fan of Zevon and Winwood for years, how the fuck did I miss this.
What a gifted poet. Lost way too soon obviously.
solidly beautiful. Equals Winwood's original in a totally different way.
Letterman and Paul Snyder certainly got him...R.I.P. buddy
Agreed!
Dammitman. Love me some Warren Zevon.
Liked it enough to look it up. Nice!
Couldn't see them all, and missed some that I regret, including Warren Zevon
one of the top 5 songwriters IMHO
and the other four?
MrBz123wee my other 4 would be Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, John Haitt or John Prine
bruce55 I agree, but he didn't write this song.
you are a very astute person bruce.
Some good picks there, +bruce55. Might make for a nice mix to listen to for a long drive, add Tom Waits and call it "Bruce's Old 55".
THE BEAT, EVEN WHEN BEING REMADE, ALWAYS RETURNS TO THE ONE.
Saw him twice at the Odeon in Cleveland in the last 90s. Oh the memories.
Great version. Great guy. Enjoy every sandwich.
Miss you Warren
Awesome version. Thanks.
