I feel like ai makes your game scream “THIS WAS JUST MADE TO EARN A QUICK BUCK” because if you can’t spend any recourses on a thumbnail artist or make it yourself, it makes your game look lazy asf. And not tk mention half the ai stuff is complete slop.

You can say that about almost every popular game on the platform that doesnt have anything to do with AI, with or without AI there's still games like that, there have been for a long time even before AI started to become a more common tool

You can immediately tell if a ROBLOX game is bad just by looking at the AI thumbnail or icon.
It is also false advertising in a way as the image itself doesn’t properly represent the game it is advertising in terms of assets and locations in-game.
It’s even worse when they use AI for textures for UGC items.
Anyone who uses AI thumbnails deserve no recognition.

One thing that completely threw and pissed me off was Starving Artists using A.I for their game KNOWING over half of their players hate it.

2006 - 2010 default screenshots of the game
2010 - 2015 screenshots of the games with the title
2016 - 2019 drawings about the game that all had the same style
2020 - 2023 renders of the game in blender
2024 - shitty ai art with the same style
all wayyy better than current gen thumbnails LOL
I think tds has been following the 2020 - 2023 game thumbnail since 2019

It's starting to get really annoying browsing through the Discover page and seeing so many AI-generated icons/thumbnails that tell me little to nothing about the game itself. On the bright side, atleast it helps filter the lazy from the good, like how "OBBY OBBY OBBY OBBY" title spams of yesteryear were a good indicator that the game was probably gonna suck.
On another note, at some point, AI just completely decimated the UGC catalog for me. There's one creator who AI-generates ugly patterns (think a carpet design), slaps them on premade hat/shirt/pant meshes, charges robux for them, and calls it a day. Thankfully they seem to have stopped in recent times, since I'm able to see actually good UGC made by skilled creators in Recently Created instead of AI slop lol
yeah it's really easy to tell when a game is worth your time just by looking at the thumbnail, i do agree though it is a really good filter to find ACTUAL good games on roblox!

Honestly this is so underrated. The fact the quality of this is actually really good. Im a game dev rn working on an unfinished game and whenever i look at the front page for thumbnail ideas this doesnt help me at all.

one designer teacher I knew told me that ai can be helpful in getting ideas of what you want to do, but never the final product

My problem with this is that it only affects a small group of people. Most of Roblox users are kids who have sports and homework and only get some time to play Roblox and they don’t really care if a logo is Ai generated or not or if the scripting was made partially by ChatGPT

AI should at most be used as a tool. Not something to do things for you, but as a small helping hand. Tools can help you do things, but you need to learn how to use them properly. Use something like AI too much, and you’re just making something else do the work for you. I can’t come up with a name for my game? Hey, chatgpt, take a look at the concept of my game and give it a name - I’ll see which one works and if I need to edit it. THAT is what AI should be used for when it comes to being a tool.

Any game that has AI in their thumbnail immediately goes on my 'never play' list. I refuse to touch any games with AI thumbnails, even if I've played them in the past. Once they get to that point, I stop playing. Period.

lmaoo, the example you bring up at 2:47 is exactly what brought my attention to all the ai generated slop games in the first place. i'd be trying to play some midnight horrors and all those weird ai slop horror games came up first, i was very confused. its a shame because midnight horrors has so much love and care put into it, as opposed to the filth that litters this platform that somehow gets way more attention. great video btw 👌👌

AI Icon is like the first check on "is this a scam" meter. Only game I saw that wasnt a scam and had AI icon was Retail Tycoon 2 but even them changed to normal icon

this video reminded me, once i was playing with some friends and when they wanted to play a specific game, i just saw the ai thumbnail and went like "oh i'm not playing this have fun guys". guess what? they made fun of me because "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover!" (turns out it was a bad copy of west hunt)

AI art steals art from actual artist to train their generative programs, this isn’t okay!! If I can’t afford something, I WORK to afford something or I learn the skill myself. Additionally, roblox artists are usually EXTREMELY affordable. You can usually find a thumbnail artist for 800 robux, which is about 5 dollars. There is no excuse for not being able to afford or make art for your games. Get over yourself.

something I'd like to comment on as an artist of five years, ai art is not art. These ai generated images will not become art until the robots who make them become fully sentient and have the capability to be creative and think for themselves. the people who write the prompts aren't artists either, because they aren't the ones making the images and putting devotion into learning a useful skill
exactly, everyone who uses ai to generate images for their games or advertisements for any purpose have no skill and don't deserve to be called "artists" or have the word "art" anywhere near their status or game

As a game dev I do disagree with some parts and agree with some other parts. I believe paying 5K Robux for an artist to go on blender and make GFX. Or spending a day or two creating art is just too complicated and people prefer AI cause it takes 1 minute instead of days or hours.

that's very valid, developers and artists can be pretty shady sometimes so it can be hard to find artists so i understand in that regard but majority of people use it because they're just lazy

As a game developer who DOES use AI, it is because it’s simply insane how easy it is to use. I only use AI for scripting and game thumbnails bc I can’t draw well, and my coding experience isn’t exactly that good.

For some reason my little brother was playing a game called “Afghanistan vs Pakistan” and it had one of those terrible thumbnails. And it was the definition of laziness: they didn’t even type in the text on the thumbnail themselves. As a result it said “AFGIANSTAN VS PAKIAN”

I'm looking to make my first game based off of Entry Point and Hellmet, and I have vowed to NEVER EVER use AI no matter what. It just doesn't fit me and I don't feel like it gives me the proper ideas. The difference is when you plan a game with AI, it feels a bit boring because it's a machine coming up with the prompt and not you, but when YOU are the planner yourself, the lead man, the REAL developer, it feels much more soulful. You know what you want and what you are DOING with your game, and you don't need a computer to do so. Sure, sure, AI can be helpful in programming but people just don't use it for the proper purpose and they usually end up becoming extremely boring games.
Also, just as a reminder, I'm 13 years old and my previous Roblox game ideas were heavily influenced by AI but the game that I'm planning will not be based off of AI at all... only if the game releases. I don't have any developers yet and I still have to plan out the storyline as it is quite a fresh plan and is about 1-2 days old as this comment is published, but I'm still determined to complete it and do it without AI, completely all about inspiration, dedication, and hard work. After all, as 'a wise man once said', success doesn't come without failure. Everybody fails once.
Something people don't often discuss about AI is the impact it has on the environment. Generative AI takes a lot of power to actually be used

There's only one situation where I can accept AI covers of games and it's when the Dev/s do not have a money to pay off an artist that will do the cover for them and they themselves aren't skilled enough to make that cover. I fear finding people that will do it for free is almost impossible.
On that part with the midnight ___ and ___ experience games, oh man do I agree with you 1000% on that. It's like buggy and sloppy games made for a cheap buck, these types of devs getting help from AI. It's like two bad things assembling into one. It sucks. It really does. I'm very sure there are good horror games, they're just diamonds in the rough, mixed in with the sloppy horror games. Also, very glad that you gave credit to the hard-working rendering/GFX people out there at 4:55! It also reminds me of what someone said online, "every prompt you tell AI, no matter how crazy or useful or smart it sounds, it will always gain knowledge in the end, the knowledge that will make it so smart to the point you can recognize what's a real picture/piece of art vs an AI-generated picture/piece of art." There was also that Lua Coding game from the IA that I think got 4th place because it used AI-generated thumbnails, so yeah.

I was trying to tell my friend yesterday since he had an ai icon I told him he shouldn’t use it because I told him that everyone hates ai on Roblox but he wouldn’t listen to me. I was thinking while watching this video “Why don’t I go in his game, take a few screenshots, edit it. And then bam!” So I’m going to try to do that because I don’t want him being hurt by people for using ai.

Corporations like this only care about things that increase revenue, sadly. Its quantity over quality, because if they make ANY decision thst could potentially knock their stocks down, I believe a shareholder can actively sue them. I could be wrong though

At least it's more visually obvious what the bad games are now. Before, when some game creators would hire actual artists, it gave the illusion that they were high-quality, but luckily they're dumb enough to think that method would still work with AI slop.

Yep, only reason I still play it is because of some few games, made mostly by passion than greed, and with effort put into it, although such games are becoming rare, they are still enjoyable.

I started playing Roblox in 2016 when I was 10 years old, primarily because I watched UA-camrs like Denis play it, who I used to look up to at the time. The platform has really become a shadow of its former self, it lost its charm and uniqueness in the strive for simplicity and a wider appeal. Builders Club has been replaced by Premium, the unique LEGO brick theme has been replaced with a semi-realistic art style, and the avatars are now primarily realistic human characters. Roblox's main goal has shifted from just being a simple platform that allows kids to create games, to a mega corporation that aims to make as much money as it possibly can. Disney, DreamWorks, McDonald's, Epic Games and Burger King all did the same thing, sacrificing quality for a higher profit. The implementation of AI is only a small part of the problem, but it gets the most attention because of how big and important it has gotten worldwide. It is such a shame, and it's only going to keep happening as mega corporations continue to expand and consumers continue to spend money on their products.
I was quite literally working on art while watching this and honestly as an artists if I game I play on Roblox starts using AI art I stop playing because it's just so frustrating to see

Roblox has been falling for so long and it's just getting worse. It was already feeling more soulless, this just brought it to a whole new level.
A.I will never replace one thing tho. The good games will stay good, while the A.I ones will be souless and boring 9/10 times.

One of my favorite games “fishing simulator” just switched to an AI thumbnail and they have gotten a lot of backlash because of it. Maybe this will help with getting rid of this problem.

I get it if it's a small game and you don't have graphic design experience and can't afford someone to do it for you, but I've seen too many HUGE games using AI icons when their old normal icons were so much better. AI should only be used when nessecary

AI should be only used to experiment with, not to replace any forms of human creativity and it annoys me when people use AI generated images for their thumbnail, so I'm glad you made this video to call it out.

roblox is becoming dystopian and im unlucky enough to be a newer dev (started nov. 22) and ive just gotta watch as everything i have passion for is destroyed by "innovation". i have never used and never will use ai, but im not sure if that even matters
if it makes you feel any better when i would develop back in like 2020, it wasn't much better minus the ai, they keep adding more and more things to make the platform worse so yeah its pretty unfortunate but good luck on your developing journey!
I feel like generative ai was made for inspiration on artworks, assisting when you lack ideas, not replace ideas and artworks

I went into a piggy horror roblox knock off and when it showed the credits in the game, it mentioned "game art" and it mentioned the supposed "artist" that participate in the game's development to add pictures into the game and when I looked at them, they were all ai.

if your a box being in a office and beeping at you do you think is unfair as Exploiters also gain a beeper by modding the client to add beeper to his tools
they remove exploiters as it proof it would even them out what roblox can't allow because why be foced into a server with other when you can make it co-op only or invite only
whenever i see weird ai images i always feel the need to throw
as a 3d modeler, i think even generating textures is taking it too far, tbh! texturing is an incredibly important & challenging skill, & is essential to the process of making a 3d model. i model, unwrap, rig, & texture each model i make & i think all of these steps are important skills! it's just a shame to see a platform meant for creativity throw its orginal goal away so quickly....

i reuse the same textures over and over through a bunch of projects, i'm mostly talking about using generating all of your textures rather than drawing at least some of them--personally i just prefer to do everything by hand (i know not everybody likes to, though, & that's fair)
