  • Опубліковано 14 лип 2018
  • This is a side-by-side comparison of the Wen 56200i 2000 watt and the Predator 2000 watt generator. We test each generator against a 1500 watt portable heater and a 5000 BTU air conditioner.
    Which generator performs better? You decide....
    WEN 56200i - HOME DEPOT $448.94 /each
    The WEN 2,000-Watt Inverter Generator produces clean energy free of voltage spikes and drops with less than 3% total harmonic distortion, making it safe enough to run laptops, cellphones, monitors, tablets and other vulnerable electronics. Generate 2,000 surge Watt and 1,600 rated Watt of power.
    Our 79.7cc 4-stroke OHV engine operates at an extremely quiet 51 decibels, quieter than a window air conditioner or the average conversation. This limits its invasiveness while hunting, camping, tailgating and restoring back-up power.
    The lightweight design makes for easy portability while the ultra-efficient 1 Gal. tank provides over 6 hours of half-load run time. This fully-packed panel comes equipped with two 3-prong 120-Volt receptacles, one 12-Volt DC receptacle and one 5-Volt USB port. Indication lights on the front of the panel provide overload and low-oil warnings.
    The automatic shutter controls the intake of gasoline to match the wattage at hand, maximizing fuel economy. Need more energy easily link up two generators using a parallel kit (sold separately) in order to share wattage amongst multiple units. And because this is a WEN Product, your inverter generator comes backed by a 2-year warranty, a nationwide network of skilled service technicians and a friendly customer helpline.
    *Extremely quiet 51 dB operation minimizes noise; EPA III and CARB compliant
    *79.7cc 4-stroke OHV engine produces 2,000 surge watt and 1,600 rated watt
    *Great for the campgrounds, the country, the parking lot and power outages

      Camera's have all kinds of automatic things that can do a lot of funny things, you need a decibel meter to tell for sure. There's at least a 90% chance that both units are made in the same factory in China, with only minor differences in features and cosmetics so they all don't look alike. Look at the screwdrivers that came with both units, both are identical and the same unusual yellow color, same factory.

    Nice review. One thing that always gets me is, Why does everyone always open these packages the same way ?
    Instead of cutting the top of the box....Tip it sideways and cut the bottom and spread the flaps out....
    Put the box Upright ..... Then just lift the Box off of the Product....Easy as Pie !

    I just bought the Wen 2250 watt generator, model #56225i and I'm running it through it's paces right now. It's not my primary generator, so high output was not a factor. I wanted something that could power my fridge/ freezer more quietly and suck less fuel than my 5500 watt primary generator. So far, I'm impressed with the Wen #56225i. I've used it to power a 1500 watt space heater, electric fryer and a panini press. It will be perfect for camping or as light duty backup to my main generator. 1st hour oil change is complete, running it for 2 hours before dumping the oil again. I will switch to synthetic after 3 hours of total run time.

I have two of the Honda EU2000i generators (first gen, have had them since they first hit the market) that power my house during power outages & they have ran perfectly all of these years. I have seen the Predator generator locally & it handled the loads placed on it fine, my father has the larger none inverted WEN generator & it hasn't given him any issues in the past three to four years he has owned it.

    Own two of the 56200i WEN's and love em. Great generator for the money. My first one is at close to 100hrs with no issues. Just picked up the second one and it's at 12hrs. WEN has a better warranty (2yrs) than the Predator (90 days). Both are pretty much the same, but you have to pay more money to get a real warranty on the Predator. Once you add the extra warranty the WEN is cheaper. Realistically if your good within 90 days (test it) you will probably not need the warranty. Predator did sound less noisy and didn't bog down as much on the AC.
    Advice: Run some Brad Penn SAE 10w30 oil (high zinc) which is necessary for air cooled engines. Also change oil a couple times within the first 10hrs. You will see metal shavings in the oil from break in. Sooner you get it out the better. Magnetic oil dispstick works good and I also added a RPM/HR gauge (great mods).

    Nice video! I just got the HF. I believe in heat cycling to break in a new engine. I'm using a 1500W hair dryer to increase the cyl. pressure to seat the rings. First few runs of 10? minutes with no load and full cool down. After that I use the hair dryer to sneak up on the loading in small bursts increasing the duration each time. Back in the day my buddy glazed the cylinder walls on his new Honda 350 because he babied it too much on the break in.

    My friend burned his Predator 2000 inverter module running 1800 watts by mistake. Took 3 minutes and poof. There is no breaker to trip out. When in overload the inverter module melts. Never expect to run a 1500 watt load on this without melting it. Inverter Module plus labor $275 plus. Predator,Wen,Roybi 1.6Kw Inverter Generator 120V/240V 60Hz MPN: 30043-Y5V1210-0000 all use this inverter module and are basicly the same.
    5000 btu Ac uses 500 watts real power and 100 watts or so reactance power. So 600 watts is what it uses. Check the watts and VA rating and power factor.

      @@OregonBatman after going trough what i mentioned before, the predator started to surge. i had to set it almost on choke to avoid the surging. i took out the carb, cleaned deeply, inspected the jet, etc and the surging was still there. i contacted HF and they said that i had to wait 16 WEEKS for a carb replace. i said what? are you kidding me? are you gonna make from zero? They said they dont have parts in any store, they have to mae a special order to china and that is why it takes so long. For that bad experience, we ended up almost gifting the predator and we are selling the 9000 before give us a "surprise" and prevented my friends from buying 6 predators, and went with 6 briggs & stratton. i will never ever get anything from HF. @@yosuecaridad944 Jack's Predator did the same thing... brought it out of the garage and fired it up and it sat there and surged. When he plugged in a load and turned the power on... the surge went away. Ran it for a little while and everything was fine again. We fired them up a few weeks ago and all is back to normal. Try starting, let it warm up (even if it surges), then put a load on it and let it run. See if that helps.

    For those new to generators, it's a good idea not to exceed 1/2 the rated output of the generator during the breaking-in period. The reason is the moving parts are still new in the engine and you are trying to "seat" the rings properly. This will give you the maximum life out of the generator. Also a good idea to vary the load.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  5 років тому +1

      Great tip... we bring the generators out twice a month and run with no load for a while, then run with a load (about half). Almost ready for first oil change. Try to run 1 to 2 hours before putting away... seems to run better each time!

    • @themanthemyththelegend1392
      @themanthemyththelegend1392 5 років тому +3

      Wrong, during break in you want cylinder pressure to seat the rings that’s the only thing that is happening, cross hatch grinds rings for a perfect seat, many many tests have been done, research for yourself doesn’t matter what the instructions say you want to load it straight from the get as the cross hatch smooths very quickly, and blow by produces acidic oil so the better the rings seat the longer the life will be.....

  • @aspendell209
    @aspendell209 6 років тому +3

    Good video.
    Most early failures on those inverter generators are related to failure to change out the oil after initial burn-in. So after you run it for 30 mins to 5 hrs, and all the rough edges have had a chance to smooth down and leave deposits in the oil, be sure to drain and change it out. That magnet should help significantly too.

    For me, the Wen would have to be significantly cheaper ($75-100 less) to choose over the Predator. One thing that was apparent to me was that the Predator was much more responsive and reacted faster when a load is put it on. It throttled up and handled that initial power surge demand much quicker. The Wen seemed to take a couple seconds to slowly rev up and react. That, plus the quality control / design issue of the Wen (exhaust not centered in case), the Wen being larger, and having a poor oil fill design, would relegate it to more of a budget version, and thus the price compared to the Predator needs to reflect that.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  4 роки тому

      Good observation Dan! The Wen was a little slower to react than the Predator. I think the Predator has better reviews, and is less than the Wen unless you find it on sale, then about same price. Was disappointed with the exhaust, but after running for a while, straightened itself out. Two years have gone by, and the Wen still performs well. No more issues at this point just yet! :)

    I did the same test you did with the 5050 btu window digital air conditioner it worked. But the thing I should have done is run ac on a little bit of an extension cord to duplicate it in a RV. The longer the cord the more the load and harder to start. I noticed the Predator had some pretty thick foam on the side panel. That's thicker foam than my 2200 watt Sportsman dual fuel suitcase style generator like yours. My dual fuel little generator runs on propane or gasoline. Propane is one of the cleanest burning fuels out there. the spark plug and carburetor never gets clogged up on propane. But one problem they use the snorkel propane conversion kit on my generator. I have to pull start it 16 through 20 times to get it started. So I come up with a plan I fill the fuel tank up with propane for about seven or eight seconds. With the fuel tank valve on, choke on and economy mode off one or two pulls it starts and it's on. Basically my generator is not pulling the propane into the engine when you pull on the cord like it should. I don't know if this is just my generator or all of them having a problem but they need to fix that before they go out of business. I've not used it on gasoline at all. In my Sportsman dual fuel 2200 watt generator its only a 79cc engine. I think they run the RPM higher to get 15 amps out of it. But that is what they told me at the factory 15 amps so it may not be true unless I measured it with a gauge. On this generator I can run 19 hours at half load on a full BBQ standard tank. And one advantage with a bag on the front seat of my truck. I can put my generator up in the front seat. and put a seat belt around it because I don't have any gasoline in it to spill. I've never had gasoline in it so far so I won't be smelling gasoline fumes. I have another generator I had the carburetor off while rebuilding it and I was just spraying propane into the intake of another gasoline only generator to start it. And with the gasoline valve shut off it was running on propane at an idle and when I put my hand over the intake to block airflow and still had the propane down the intake it revved all the way up. Running propane is more dependable but I'm having like i say a little problem with mine. And this is probably going to destroy Sportsman dual fuel generators because most people don't know to fill up the fuel tank with propane to get it started. You shouldn't have to do this to get it started. I paid $500 for it on the door. I missed the sale when it was on sale for $400 on the door which was a better deal.

      cz luver I did this , well my son did it for me, I ran it off of the little 2 stroke 1000 watts. It was everything it wanted but it worked. I had our ran into our camper with a 12 guage 25 foot drop cord. My wife wasn’t even think about it and plugged her hair dryer into it. Running the 5000 btu A/C only pulls like 450 to 550 watts. Her hair dryer pulls 1700 watts. It dogged it down some but the genny never tripped its breaker or gave up. My son also invented me a meet little cap for mine. He took off the air vent valve and job welded a spout onto the cap which he attached to my cap. He then attached a 5 gallon fuel tank with another homespun spout at the bottom. 3 feet of fuel line and a 5 gallon bucket to gravity feed the predator to. It will now run almost all weekend. He said he’s looking for a beer keg to hold 16 gallons of gas to run to both of our gennies to and buy the parallel control system to. That way when we are out at our camp spot. By the way it’s a privately owned sight we can have roughly 4000 watts. We have a concrete lined pit about 30 feet from our camp sight. When they are running you can’t hear them. Since his gas cap invention which provides about 36 hours depending on what we run there have been a few mornings we have awoke to a very hot tent. We just run up the road and buy 10 gallons of gas. I usually have to take my boat because by day 3 it’s usually needing gas also. Love this genny set up. My next one. I’m buying the next bigger unit however. My oldest son is wanting to start bringing his family along. He asked us if he could power his 5000 btu unit off our setup. I said well if it doesn’t the nearest harbor freight is 17 miles away. I got extremely lucky when I bought mine. It was an open box return. They wanted 350 for it. I asked if they could cut me a better deal. She took it up front. Said how’s 175. I told her to ring it up. It was in its first oil fill. So I took it home dumped out the oil and put in Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. Ran like a champ. 450 generator for 182 dolls out the door. I did not get my tool pouch it my 12 volt plug in though. I guess I’ll look on amazon see if they sell them on their. I have been nothing but pleased with mine. We’re talking about next year buying 3 10x10 sheds and slowly remodeling them into houses or cabins if you will. That way the cousins have some privacy if they want to bring a friend. And just fixing up the place a little better. It’s 5 acres. Right now we have an out house. Eventually we’d like to get a septic system and drill a well. That’s a few years from now though.

    I have two of the Wens with the parallel setup. One wen will easily run a 5000 btu AC unit all night long on eco mode with gas to spare. If I store it for a few months I do drain the gas and run it until the carburetor runs dry to keep the cheap gas from ruining it. When I gas it up after storage it usually takes 3-4 pulls to prime the carb to run. I have had them for about 3 years now, and good little generators. Im sure the Wen and Predator are probably made in the same kung-fu factory and are great generators

    I have the same Predator generator, I bought mine last year during Hurricane Irma for the $449 price and used it to run our 120v 682watt/5.8amp 9000btu Mini Split in the house for 11 days along with the refrigerator. , but I bought a 2nd one after the hurricane new in the box because HF would not let people return them for $250 so I can run them in parallel or run higher watt loads, because so many generators popped up on the market. I bought a 2nd one because occasionally the generator would trip overload if the a/c and the frig compressors came on at the exact same time, which only happened about 3 times over an 11 day period. We ran ours in the window in the garage, I stuck plywood over the window on the outside for the hurricane but cut open a section just large enough to fit the generator out the window and out the plywood. Then on the inside of the garage, I ran a section of 2x3 I think it was through the handle on the generator and screwed it into the plywood from both sides to keep from someone pulling it out the window. The generator pulls air from the side with the plugs and out the back, so all the fumes stayed outside the garage. Then ran a box fan plugged in just blowing at the generator in the garage to maybe help with cooling, it ran nonstop for 11 days without any issues really. We averaged about 7hrs per gallon of fuel out of it running the a/c and frig once they both were cooled off.

      I found it very difficult to order parts from harbor freight for my predator 3500. The part number you need to order isn't the same as the part number is called.
      I had to call HF to get the number and order. I just wanted a spare air filter assembly, spark arrestor, and oil door. It actually took a few days to get someone at the 800 number. I also had to get the part number from a different department, then do the actual ordering from a customer service number.
      It took months for my entire order to come in. I couldn't see updates on the website or order spare parts from the website.
      My generator has worked fine though, I would just hate to have an actual problem and have to go through harbor freight.
      The WEN website is easy and I can already see the spare parts I want to get.
      I'm an odd bird when it comes to spare parts, I order consumables when I get an item because a lot of times products change and you can't get them anymore.
      I like to have a spare air filter, or whatever, ready to go so I can just swap things out if I have to maintain during extended use.

Not sure what harmonic distortion is, but it sounds purtty! Yup... in Eco mode, auto throttle for the load. Haven't tried draining carb, I generally start it once a month to make sure all is well. Not too messy adding oil if you have the correct funnel. 350CI (LOL!) Haven't had them long enough for long term comparison. From videos I've seen and reports I've read.... they can last a long time and people are happy with them. It appears fuel gauge is accurate... when it hits "E", it stops! You will need a tool to remove sides to get to engine... I think there is three or four to remove.

    Nice comparo. A thought on your pros/cons regarding filling up the oil. Just like the Predator, you can remove the side panel on the WEN. So, having the oil filler door is a bonus if you have the right kind of funnel. Otherwise, you can just remove the panel. So, this shouldn't be a pro for the Predator and con for the WEN... If anything, you could classify it as being the same, and the WEN having an option that might not be useful to everyone.

    The way off center exhaust pipe is NOT poor design, it is shipping/handling damage!! I also purchased my handsome orange Wen56200i from HomeDepot.com figuring it would get better/faster handling and after I got it home I found that the exhaust pipe cracked and broke away some plastic on the panel's circular opening the exhaust exits. A call to Wen had a new black panel delivered totally FREE in 3 days. Some days later I confirmed the breakage was caused by rough handling, as in dropping the new box from about knee high on it's END (not bottom) causing the weight of the Motor-Genny unit to flex on the 4 motor mounts hard enough to actually BEND the engine mounted steel the motor mount's small rubber portion is bonded to. I almost too easily bent the 2 bent motor mounts steel brackets back with a screwdriver turned in the tight gap, centering the exhaust pipe in the opening to where it belongs. Wen is also to blame for what happened as the motor mount steel is NOT thick enough -and- they lack the stout travel limiting tabs visible on my (excellent) Champion 75531i inverter genny. Then again, if the mounts were heavier, they may break the more expensive all plastic base of the genny. Prominent "FRAGILE - DO NOT DROP!" warnings on all sides may also help. If buying from HD, open and check it over closely for plastic breakage and exhaust pipe being exactly centered in the plastic panel's opening. Mine was slightly down-from-center, but did not seem that irregular.
    About your run tests, if you waited 20 seconds for the factory emptied carburetor float bowl to fill up with fuel the Wen would -always- cold engine start on 2 pulls. Immediately applying 1500W loads may be good for piston ring break-in but it could damage the engine's most vulnerable connecting rod big end bearing and piston skirt areas, adding thousands of hours of normal run time wear in just a few seconds. One on-line .pdf owners manual I read the for a clone 2k inverter genny mentions in the break-in about the maximum 50% load heating/cooling (curing) of the alternator stator windings, possibly referring to the stator winding's final curing of the tank dunked insulating compound. I just cringe every time a novice tries to start his RV's 15K AC unit, and continues to RUN it, with his brand new genny! Also, some great advice to those novices, one guy on UA-cam left the choke on for 61 seconds(!!!) the choke should come partially off immediately after the engine revs up to avoid spark plug deposits, cylinder wall lube oil wash off and crankcase oil dilution.
    HD offered a great magnetic Aluminum dipstick with purchase ,that I also got, so valve train, piston ring and cast iron cylinder wall iron wear "powder" is captured on the tip.

      Thanks Robert for the info... I agree, definitely was mishandled in shipping for sure! Lucky for me, after running the genny for a bit, everything vibrated right back into place. Yeah... already got spanked for not following recommended break-in procedures. Glad people are paying attention and laying down some much needed info! I will be doing the first oil change soon, we'll see how much the magnetic dipstick picks up. After the short test runs we did... have been babying it ever since and not overdoing it! Need this to last me a while! Thanks for all the great information sir, much appreciated!

    If anyone is in the market for ANY generator, pay attention to the specs.
    1) Wattage ratings. They tend to advertise the surge watt rating instead of the run watt rating to make it seem like it has a bigger capacity. No one runs any generator at the surge rating continuously. My construction generator has an 8000 watt run rating with a 13,500 surge rating (designed for large inductive loads at startup). Advertising it as a 13,500 watt generator would be false advertising in my opinion.
    2) Run times. They use to advertise run times at 50% load. They are now leaning toward 25% load. That makes it seem like it's a longer running generator. 25% load on a 1700 watt genrator is only 425 watts. Consider the watt demands you'll be placing on your generator.

    I’m putting a small 5000 btu window unit in a truck camper I’m now configuring, just an A.R.E. bed cap/topper. I’ll either stick the AC unit in a window when I get to my site, or figure a way to plumb it in.
    Besides the AC, and mind you they have these tiny Frigidaire units now that don’t pull a lot of amps, could these 2000s also handle a bulb or two, a TV, etc? It didn’t sound like either of those was struggling with that old, inefficient AC of yours at all!
    As everyone has done, I’ve been eyeing the Predator 3000, but I just don’t think I need it and my back ain’t what she used to be. Either are my muscles.

      I would suggest Havoline for the generators,it is far better than Pennzoil because Pennzoil is loaded with parafin plus additives to subdue the high sulphur and potash content...which all contribute to a high varnish build up in your engine...Also make sure the 30wt is a detergent type oil...non-detergent cause severe build up of deposits in your engine...

    Has either the Predator or the Wen overloaded when using the small AC? I bought a Predator 2000 to run the small 5000 btu AC for my teardrop camper and the generator overloaded twice when the AC was on high as the compressor came on.
    The AC I have is rated at 450 watts and 4.1 amps max, but I also used a Kill A Watt to measure it and it only actually draws 380 watts and about 3.1 amps when the compressor is running.

    • @OregonBatman
      @OregonBatman  5 років тому

      Hey notruss1... thanks for stopping by. Sorry to hear of your overloading issue. Neither the Wen or the Predator overloaded on the 5000 watt A/C. Actually handles it quite well. I am wondering if your Predator has a fault from the factory? It should pull your A/C without a problem. I believe it can handle a load up to around 13 amps. Any issues running other appliances such as a small heater? If it works without any issues... could be the A/C unit itself giving you problems. Only time I had the overload light blink, is when using a 1000 watt microwave, but was still able to boil water. Hoping it's just the A/C and not the generator (a/c cheaper to replace!) :)

    • @notruss1
      @notruss1 5 років тому

      @@OregonBatman No, I think it was the generator because the AC works fine on 120V. I suspect the quality of the Chinese parts vary a bit. Also, the startup for a 5000 btu AC can sometimes be more than 13 amps which would trip it. I returned it and HF refunded my money no questions. Now I just need to find one that wont have issues. A lot of the cheap 2000W generators wont handle the load they are advertised at. Have you ran your AC with it on high for over an hour?

At the end, he kind of implies the Wen didn't do as well as the Predator on the AC test, but I think that clearly shows the Predator had a harder time juicing up the AC when he flicked it's power switch. I see on todays date, 03-16-21, the Wen is on sale on their website for like $374? Sounds like a bargain.
