Plug Spawn : How to Grow Mushrooms
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лют 2022
- Plug spawn simply put, mycelium grown out on wooden dowels to be used as a vehicle to deliver spawn mostly to logs but there are other use cases as well. In this video we go over how to make the plugs, and the good news is that this is easy as we've already gone over all the techniques necessary in previous videos! This is by far, in my opinion, the most underrated type of spawn in the game, and has many many applications especially in infrastructure poor operations. So whether a mushroom farmer, or hobbyist, I would highly recommend checking into plug spawn and if it'll help your op out or even to help you garden with mushrooms.

I've made a few plugs and something that I found that helped colonization was just to dust a spoon full of brown rice flower on my plugs before I would sterilize them. Seemed to helped the grain spawn grab ahold a little faster. Great video man. Hope to continue to watch your business grow
Very interesting. I'll do some trials cause that makes a ton of sense to me!
@@Mossycreekmushroomsofficial that would be awesome! Just for the sake of repetition, I used rye grains innoculate with pearl oyster. Before sterilization I added about a teaspoon of brf to a quart of birch dowels. Just enough to lightly coat the dowels. Before I tried this method I had problems with the transfer colonizing the dowels. But after doing this I had great results. Happy growing man!
@@elliotw5918 Are there any books or extensive tutorials you can recommend? Gainesville, FL is a great place to raise them weather-wise. Would love to take a class w/ you- preferably after I @ least skim & scan some textbooks. Thanks, MaggieG
@@maggieg771 growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms by Paul Stamets is the gold standard for an intro to mushroom growing. Taught me everything I needed to know and a LOT more. But there are lots of resources available for the beginner. UA-cam is super helpful but one thing I found to be pertinent to myself is "don't be afraid to fail."
You learn a lot through trial and error in this hobby so don't be afraid to jump right in and get your feet wet. The rewards are well worth it!
@@elliotw5918 Do you think it would it help more if I vac-packed the inoculated plug spawn & brown rice flour? I typically use the vac-packer to throw things like steaks in the freezer so they don’t get freezer burn but it’s useful for keeping many things from oxidizing & getting an off taste.
I’m just learning I am so excited. Thank you for your video.
Love the vision!! Thanks for keeping the mushroom community well informed my g… nuff respect 🇯🇲
Thank you, and you are very welcome. I'll do my best to continue.
Keep up the good work brother! Thanks for making such informative videos.
Thank you , I will certainly try.
What’s up dude!!
I work with Max out at Pebble Creek Produce in Caledonia MI. You probably also know Jim Case?
Max told me how you trained him out in Tennessee. So cool. Small world. 🌎😁
Looking forward to that stick spawn video..... never heard of it
I've experimented with inoculating plugs with just straight LC. What I've found greatly speeds up colonization is adding just 1 cup or so of grain spawn to it.
Makes sense to me. I haven't tried that yet, but seems like it would work well.
@11:28 - When transferring from LC to Grain: Rather than use syringes, connect the needle to a Leuer lock silicone hose and Leuer lock adapter that has been sterilized, and insert the needle into the self healing port. Then connect an air pump to the filter disc, and power the air pump with an intermittent foot pedal. Use the air pressure to dispense the LC, and save all those consumables and time... Put another .2 um filter on the air pump for extra security.
We are buying our forever place and it's all virgin land. I am so excited to learn about the dowels because I plan to fell a few trees to inoculate with lions mane and and few different strains of oyester.
Good luck on the purchase, and I certainly hope you plant the heck out of it and have an over abundance of produce!
Loving it from Morristown!
You're very close then!
Thanks man! I was JUST thinking to ask if you’d consider a plug spawn vid. Thanks for the ratios of dry plugs:H2O. Your tutorials take A LOT of experimenting out of the process🙏🏼
Ever since the mushrooms took over my brain I can read minds!
@@Mossycreekmushroomsofficial 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤗!
Wouldn’t water ratio be 1.5 lbs for 1 lb?
2.5 lbs total, 1 lb plugs (40%) 1.5 lbs water (60%)
Your 1.32 lbs of water makes a 43:57 ratio. It probably doesn’t matter I’m just making sure I’m not missing something here as I want to apply this ratio to other growing medium.
Cool video. Thanks.
Hoping to get on that consultation soon 👍🏾
Sounds good to me! Bring it ;)
I have a jar full of popsicle sticks with shiitake mycelium growing on them. :)
Nice! Basically peg spawn there.
Love plug spawn!
Me too!
I've seen people grow maitake with plug spawn: Here's the process, I believe it to be far better than the way people grow shiitake and other plug spawn logs (at least for maitake or reishi, very slow-growing mushrooms): 1. Take logs, around 3-6inches in diameter, drill your inoculation holes in them. Sterilize those logs, either in a PC or a steam sterilizer (your wood should also hydrate itself here but you may hydrate before or after this step). Take them out and let them cool. Innoculate the holes with whatever you have (personally, I most prefer wood shavings from the wood I carve, and I top it off with either a plug or colonized hardwood sawdust, seal all holes with wax (It doesn't have to be generous but just enough to add a layer on top, but i think it would do fine without wax). Take all your logs, give them a light mist with a hose, and put them all in a bag and store them somewhere safe (your garage if you have the space, warehouse, shed, attic even) for the next 6-12 months (maitake is slow). When they are done, they should look basically the same, but exhibit some mycelium on the outside. Then find a light patch of dirt (you don't want a lot of clay in the soil) that isnt in darkness but generally doesn't receive a lot of direct sunlight. Bury the logs, make sure to have at least 2 inches of dirt on top. The soil is there to trap moisture in the logs, but the carried risk is that it's more likely to be eaten slowly by bugs, worms, and whatnot. A well-colonized log should be fairly resistant and produce mushrooms even if it has bugs in it. Also, I suggest spreading these logs out at least half a foot. Done! when the conditions are right, the logs will fruit and you may harvest.
I've heard that method called the pony log method. I haven't tried it before but I see it done a lot in pictures and videos out of Asia. It makes sense to me to do at least some like this if you have the outdoor space.
Nothing earth shattering, but I live off grid and I go around my local area collecting fallen bark. I run it through my chipper and use it in my masters mix bags. But I might try bark chips as spawn!!
Oh, I like that idea. I might see if the city will drop off some wood chips here and just add it to my Goat bags. Thank you sir.
@@Mossycreekmushroomsofficial it certainly works. It may add 1 or two days extra colonising time, but it works
Dope tune! I didn't have massive success with plug spawn project, but I think it's because I didn't handle hydrating the logs right. I'm thinking nocing logs the day after cutting in late winter/early spring is the way to go. Then place ricks in deep shade with a tarp over them (maybe on low ground); also wondering if a tarp underneath the stacks to keep moisture would be effective? could raise logs on bricks (on tarp) or what have you. With my last plug spawn project, I may have soaked logs too frequently (in tubs of water, disrupting the natural cycle; the logs were a bit older and dry; is re-hydrating old logs a bad idea?). Thinking spraying ricks with a hose and wetting ground, or tarp, under them is the better way.. Looking forward to another go at it this spring. There's a lot of volunteer mulberry on the farm here...wondering if it's a good choice to plug?...I heard it's a hardwood. Loving kindness too all!
Thank you, it's called Ganymede by Yehezkel Raz. Keeping your logs hydrated is important for sure. A lot of people setup drip irrigation systems for them, or other systems to keep them from losing water. If they run out of water in the spawn run then they die pretty easily. I think Mulberry would work with something aggressive like oysters or turkey tail.
King!
loving the consistent uploads, looking to try some plug spawn this spring.
Edit: Also curious how you would use plug spawn for hugelkultur ?
I'll endeavor to keep up the consistency! I'll have to do a video on it, but basically while you are piling up the wood you can inoculate it with plugs directly, or even scatter and then cover them with the wood and earth.
I tried several kinds of pre-made plugs (and inoculated saw dust) from different vendors, but only ever got Turkey Tail to grow on oak logs. Sealed with beeswax (which the bees and hornets then took as a gift). I had much better results with bags of sawdust, one of the better ones was your TurtleSong oyster from syringe.
You have to make sure the logs are well hydrated throughout the process, that might be why others didn't take to your log but turkey tail did, its a fairly fast growing species.
Turtlesong is a helluva oyster for sure, and it's already wild nature makes it well suited to outdoor cultivation.
@@MaxS535 Hydration is so important on so many levels.
Is there anyway I could take a hands on class w/ you? I learn things like this whether post-op dressings or something else finicky by “see one, do one (w/ supervision), & teach one”.
Please & Thank you,
Maggie G
i think the plugs might not me the best because of having to hammer them in extra step that would be time consuming
Where do you buy the plugs?
Will the plugs fruit on fallen Ash trees?
The depends on what species of mushroom you are using, if oyster most likely. Ash is a workable wood for sure.
Perfect! I have a bunch of your LC
what sealer is that?
It's the AIE-300HIM from Pack-Secure. Make sure it's the 12 inch model and not the 16 inch.
@@Mossycreekmushroomsofficial thank u
@@Mossycreekmushroomsofficial is there anything wrong about the 16 inch?
@@andrewhsieh3327 It's the same power as the 12 inch, but over a bigger area so it's actually weaker.
Gorilla gardening is rad. I do it myself, but please do a little research to avoid planting an invasive species.
That's certainly something to be mindful of.
Why would u waste a plug to put in a garden mix of grain and wood pellets in a bag is more efficent. Really wasteful tek.
So all these years of making videos, you never mention once about plug spawn. You do plug spawn every year. I call B.S. !
I've only had plug spawn listed on my website for years, and even now have a disclaimer there that we aren't selling it for the past couple of years but ok, you obviously know that I have already done all the videos on all the knowledge I have. lol. I love obvious ignorance.
One of the first videos up on this channel was from a log cultivation class that Andrew taught 6 years ago using plug spawn. We sold plugged logs at farmers markets for years, and plug spawn has been listed on the website for ages. So yeah, Andrew obviously didn't have any clue about one of the most entry level cultivation techniques until just now. Glad you called out that shyster...
