  • Proxxon FET Table Saw splitter. Since I had an extra finger protector I have now turned it into a splitter. Although it is not quite as thick as my saw blade, it can be used on one side. I almost always use my Cross Cut Sled where I have other forms of finger protection and here I can not use the original finger protector either.

I bought this saw just recently and didn't realise the splitter was higher than the blade. I did think of making this exact same modification, now I see someone else with the same idea I'm confident it will work.

I would never recommend anyone to remove a safety device but only say that I have done it because it is the only possibility to use the saw optimally. I started by removing the protective part and haven't missed it, later I made the splitter you see in the video and it works fine.

True, I've got several dents in my manicure by getting 0.1mm too close!
Shocking experience, at least it made fingers numb while I cleaned & taped it to stop the bleeding!

What a coincidence, just today I did the same to my Proxxon FET. I also cutted the original fin but higher, around 8mm from the pin. Still, had to cut +5mm on the sled. I had a kick back a few day ago, rather spectacular since the flying piece went straight to a big lamp bulb that exploded and filled all the room with pieces of glass :)

What a coincidence two people same thought, I sawed my just under the saw blade so I can saw notes something I often do. Kick back is something to try to avoid, even a small stick hits hard when it first flies.

@@Harris-DIY Hi again, I uploaded a short video of my FET with the sawed fin and sled (very basic sled) ua-cam.com/video/1vewvbzxXPU/v-deo.html

Hello Harris, I did the same modification. Interestingly, for me the splitter only works on the right side. On the left side the wood lifts and leads to kickback. On the right side (almost) not. So I think I will just braze some thin sheet of brass or steel on the left side. I think .3 or max .5 mm should be sufficient. Luckily - so far no kickback happened. All the best, Bastian

I think we misunderstand each other. When I say the left side of the saw blade, I mean the side that faces the side of the saw where the start button is located. Hope you find a solution.

@@Harris-DIY yes - left side where the start button is. Strangely my splitter is tilted maybe 1 degree or so to the right. Enough that it only works on the right side and kickback happens on the left.
Now - I have brazed 0.5mm brass on the left side of the splitter and 0.2mm brass on the right side. And I file it down a bit. Now the splitter is around 1.7mm thick. Just a bit more than the blade. I think it works fine now. But I will do some more tests.
Splitter only works if it is marginally thicker than the saw blade - so far my experience at least.
      :)

    Hi
The Problem with the "Splitter" that comes with the saw is, that its not wide enough for the built in saw Blade. The Blade is 1,6 mm wide and the "Splitter" is only 1mm wide. This cannot work! No way! For safety reasons it`s always recommended to use a proper working Splitter. So i made a new one from 1,55 mm Brass sheet. Still not the same width as the blade but 100% better. Since i`m using the new splitter i don`t have any blademarks from the backside of the blade on my workpieces anymore.
    Greetings

You are absolutely right, in terms of safety it can only be used for longitudinal cuts on the left side of the saw and the same applies if you regularly change to saw blades in other thicknesses. I have also considered one or two that fit in thickness with the saw blades I use the most.

  • @andrewdolinskiatcarpathian

Is the purpose of a “saw splitter” to help prevent “kick back”? If so the ideal thickness does indeed appear to be the same as the saw blade. I think I will look to make a “saw splitter” the same thickness as my blade. Thank you for showing this.

    • @Harris-DIY
      @Harris-DIY  3 роки тому +1

You are right, the splitter is only parallel to the Left side of the saw blade and it is the side I use for control and resistance but I would also like one with the same thickness as the saw blade I use, unfortunately I have several saw blades in different thicknesses.

@@Harris-DIY Quite a challenge then to make them in various thicknesses. I will have a go.

Thanks for the link, it's an interesting video that I'll probably watch a few times. Maybe the splitter and saw blade do not have to be 100% equally thick.

The original splitter is higher than the blade. As a first timer on a circular saw, I didn’t notice this, my job got stuck when I do a shallow groove cut.

    • @Harris-DIY

Thanks for your comment, in my opinion a splitter should always be slightly under the saw blade.

good idea for this splitter. But why didn't you use the original thing without the orange part ?

Yes you have to be careful and that is one of the reasons why I prefer to use my Cross Cut Sled, here you are much better protected both when it comes to the fingers, kicks back and splinters. I hope your finger gets usable again.

It needed cutting the height to below height of the blade to fit through his sled. The original has a pivot pin attaching the orange shield.
