Mormons have recently risen to astonishing business success. Cubans in Miami climbed from poverty to prosperity in a generation. Nigerians earn doctorates at stunningly high rates. Indian and Chinese Americans have much higher incomes than other Americans; Jews may have the highest of all. Husband-and-wife team Amy Chua (author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother) and Jed Rubenfeld-both Yale professors-discuss their new book, The Triple Package, and expose the three unlikely traits that explain the rise and fall of cultural groups in America, in a talk that could transform the way you think about success and achievement.

I wanted to hate her like everyone else when she first became publicly known with her book. But then i googled her, saw that she was valedictorian of her high school, then graduated with the highest honors at Harvard where she got her BA and JD at!!! She clearly worked very hard to do that. How can you not respect that.

Very impressive research. The hubris of ethnic groups is a minor drawback, however it instills the confidence needed to push them forward despite obvious environmental obstacles to upward social nobility. I also agree that having a strong American identity can really hurt your chances of upward mobility. It’s too broad to foster intellectual growth in an ethnic group.

Asian women are the most beautiful! My wife is Chinese. I'm caucasian American. 46 years married. However, my annoyance is all Asians I've known are very materialistic, success driven, as though they have an inferiority complex. Sorry, my observation.

Amy chua goes too far. I fear she will do to the next generation what Dr Spock did to the last.
