    John Travolta was involved with an older actress named Diana Hyland who died of breast cancer at 41 around the filming or before of Saturday Night Fever. His wife also died from breast cancer and of course Olivia Newton John succumbed to the disease this past year.

    In the early 90s, I went to the launch of a ROCKY HORROR-style audience interactive screening of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER that some kids from the cinema club at the local college thought would be a home run idea. I don't believe any of them had actually seen the movie before. My friends and I went, got popcorn, sat in the back and waited like Michael Jackson in THRILLER for the moment when the audience went from "Hey! Let's dress in bell-bottoms and get drunk and dance in the aisles at this movie!" to "Holy f'n sh!t - what's with the rape and death and WHATTHEACTUALF'K???" We were NOT disappointed on that account, lol. (Plus, SNF on 35mm!)

    Phenomenal film! John Travolta deserved the honor when he was nominated in the "Best Actor in a Motion Picture" category for this movie at the Oscars...The award would end up going to Richard Dreyfuss for his performance in "The Goodbye Girl"...🏆🏆

    I saw this on its release in 1977 and remember it for its gritty side, as much as for its disco music. Its very much a film of the 1970's. The screenplay is by Norman Wexler, who only a few earlier had co-scripted "Serpico" (1973). So we get to see the same streets and grimy way of life, that Travis Bickle was living on a year earlier and at the same time experience the soft focus world of Tony Manero, "King Of The Dance Floor".

    I saw it on Amazon Prime and it looks great. Me being a 70s kid I was delighted to see how the 1977 of my childhood was again.

    It should really come as no surprise that a once-significant major Hollywood studio like Paramount would release one of its most important titles of the revolutionary "New Hollywood" era of the 1970's with such cheap and garish cover art, essentially re-characterizing a film that still remains relevant as having all the intellectual depth of a party favor at a sweet 16 party. A company like Criterion should of long ago put the film into its catalogue with the original first-issue 1977 poster art on it's cover, which conveyed a much more vivid representation of the working class claustrophobia and darkness of the story it was about to tell, with its serious and almost existential tagline: "Where do you go when the record is over..."

    I need to finally add this movie to my collection. I've seen it multiple times and want to own a copy, but just never came across it in a store (or not with the extra cash). I might not have been motivated to hunt it down because it is kind of depressing. I'm quicker to buy the kind of movies I think "time to relax and just enjoy something." This ain't that, but it is good.

    Regarding the cover art it's probably just a simple matter of a higher-up saying "Make it fresh and new but don't go crazy with it."

    Could almost pass for a Scorsese film of the same period ("Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver"). With Travolta posing in his underwear as Rocky and Serpico posters look on, it's hard to believe an English-American from Alabama who went to Yale filmed it and not an Italian-American with bejeweled fingers. I wonder how many of a younger generation went into it thinking it was going to be "Footloose" or even "Grease" and they got a bit of "Death Wish." High point is Tony and Stephanie's dance, which in every other dance-off movie would've been a predictable, over-the-top "Dirty Dancing" extravaganza, but was played so understated and romantic - it's where the film has you in the palm of its hand.
    I lived right in that neighborhood, it's all but completely overrun by Russians and Ukrainians, I saw one Italian shop-owner that was it. They went off to the burbs like the Sopranos.

    I saw the screenshots on caps-a-holic (which let you directly compare the exact same screenshot from the Blu Ray and the 4K), and from what I saw there, the 4K looked MUCH noticeably sharper and clearer with MUCH better grain and all that. Of course that is just one example, with how that particular website does their screenshots, and the particular shots that they showcased, but it looked great to me.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Рік тому +4

      My advice continues to be always take screenshots with massive grains of salt. They never tell the full story of a film in motion, they're literally single moments frozen in time, selected from millions of other frames. I stand by my statement: sometimes this movie looks excellent on 4K, other times it looks waxy and smooth.

      @@CerealAtMidnight Oh yeah of course definitely, I always look at multiple sources, and read/watch multiple reviews (like yours), and keep all those things in mind and just try to get as much info as I can in order to make my decision to purchase or not

    Perhaps the sharpness is also inconsistent on the 1080p Blu-ray, but not as noticeable because the 4K is capable of a far greater swing in clarity. Images on caps-a-holic appear to favor the 4K by a wide margin, at least in 35mm sharpness.

    this film was Referenced in the sony sci-fi Family comedy, SHORT CIRCUIT, with steve guttenburg and ally sheedy
    the scene from saturday night fever featured in short circuit that is referenced, is a dance scene
    and stephanie and johnny 5 are having fun dancing along to the music from that scene
    i legitimately think that if they did a family friendly version of this movie, like a Pg version
    it wouldnt be so dark, and plus, it would be more like how on short circuit that stephanie and johnny 5 Liked the dance scene

    HDR is _not_ a new thing unless you're talking about digital home video. As far as I know, film has had HDR built-in. Also, many Hollywood cameras use RAW formats, and I think those capture the raw HDR footage, but when color-grading etc, they've been tone mapping that RAW footage to SDR. With HDR, they have less tone mapping they have to do.
    I say this because I've spent a lot of time working on HDR for video games. Many games are HDR-capable, but the renderer tonemaps to SDR. If you can get into the render chain and change the 16-bit color values into 10-bit HDR, you can convert older games to HDR. I'm assuming digital RAW cameras can also record this HDR information, but it's been tone-mapped to SDR. This is why Adobe's Lightroom was a separate app from Photoshop.
    Many cameras support "HDR", but that's where they take images at different exposures and combine them together. It's not really the same thing because it's tone mapping to SDR. When taking a real HDR photo, you'd keep the exposure high and capture that on film designed for high exposures and also on film designed for low exposures. I could be wrong, but Hollywood film cameras can let in a lot more light than something like a phone camera, so they should be able to represent high-exposure content in the same scene as low-exposure content.

      Yes, I'm talking about High Dynamic Range as a tool for home video, which is a product of the 4K TV era and did not exist in its current form prior to 2016. New 4Ks are given a brand new HDR treatment that is often done without the input or approval of the director or cinematographer. As a result, it is often revisionist.
      HDR has been around in some form for many years (ILM pioneered software for it 20 years ago), but in the context of this video, HDR was applied retroactively and choices were made that make the film look different than it ever has before--including in theaters back in 1977. There's an interesting interview with the cinematographer of The Usual Suspects talking about how HDR makes the film look very different than his original grading.

    • @Saturn2888
      @Saturn2888 Рік тому

      @@CerealAtMidnight Interesting! And the fact that it's always 4K + HDR, you don't really get a choice either.
      I've only ever seen IMAX movie discs come with both an HDR and non-HDR version on UDH.
      What's that ILM thing you're talking about?

    There's definitely a dnr issue with paramount 4k discs for sure. But the main issue is the encoding for sure. Turn on the Metadata next time upu watch one of their 4ks and they dip insanely low to freaking dvd levels on so many of their 4k releases. Even if it's on a bd100. Watch the opening sequence of revenge of the fallen for example. It literally goes to 1mbps before shooting up to actual 4k bitrates. And because of that awful banding and other artifacts pop up
