when I was 13 years old I painted my skateboard. I wanted it to like by the back drop from north by north bats song I watched on radio with pictures. I'm nearly 50 now.... still love the Bats!
The Clean, The Church, The Chills, The Bats...why do so many of my faves come from that part of the world?? I saw their concert at Neumos on this visit. Sparsely attended but it was lovely.
Have always concidered myself to know a lot of music, but just discovered this band! What a perfect find for my ADHD hyberbored quarantine self. I have 40 yrs of music to catch up on! I realize how narrow my music knowledge is! ...& just when I was getting frustrated with current music and bands a magic musical miracle happens. Digging for gems is yielding much more crop than waiting for new growth!
Lucky one, you! This is a stellar band who have released a modest amount of records that are all stone cold classics if you ask me. Down the rabbit hole, you!
If you're still looking, a certain period in New Zealand produced some simply amazing music - The Bats, The Chills, The Verlaines, The Clean are a place to start.
The Bats are one of my all-time favorite bands, period. They are one of those rare bands that whenever they release something I automatically want to hear it.
Kudos to a band that can keep the same line up for 40 years, even The Stones can't do that one. North By North from one of their earlier albums is a classic.
I only discovered The Bats just last year for the first time. I absolutely love their songs. Such a great, underrated band and I love their New Zealand accents! Cheers to The Bats!
Unfortunately only so few people in Europe knew all the good stuft from down under back then... only a handfull of record stores in the 3-4 biggest cities had the releases...until they were also in the rural areas, it was already the 90s
If I'm correct and it's the same group, It's a Durban group which I saw at a club in Durban in the 60's and in the then Rhodesia in the early 70's. Does anybody know if this is correct.
wasy35 in my ears it is actually the other way around ;) but also actually REM themselves recognised it was their sound they copied when they started :D
wasy35 Absolutely positively NOPE! You have no idea what you're talking about. Whereas R.E.M. started sucking at about a decade in, these guys have remained superb and true to themselves even after 36 (and counting) years!
I have the opposite opinion. Sure R.E.M is good and all, but this is on the next level. They’ve had better days sure, but this is still an amazing band.
The Bats one of most underrated bands ever.🦇
Agreed
The Clean, The Bats, Heavy Eights, The Mad Scene… something really great. Tks tks

The Bats are one of the most beautiful bands ever created. Ther music is gorgeous and I miss them touring in the states.

I've just heard them for the first time a few weeks ago. Wonderful.

I also automatically buy it when I hear about a new Bats album. Have them all and really not a weak link in the bunch!

KEXP is so lucky to have had these guys in their studio. Gold dust.
A great little set of songs by The Bats. Beautifully played.
Still brilliant all these years later.
can't wait to see you all live again. sitting here working out the songs on the acoustic. so beautiful
One of my all time favourite
Great band!
The bats rocks so much, and so does KEXP!
Prolly one of the best bands ever.
Pretty sure
Prolly.
Yay! Was wondering when this would be up on youtube. I tuned into KEXP (from Makarora, New Zealand) to hear The Bats play. Loved it!
This band "jumped on the train" 30 years ago!
People just don't understand the influence that Flying Nun had on alternative music in the beginning of the 80s
Unfortunately only so few people in Europe knew all the good stuft from down under back then... only a handfull of record stores in the 3-4 biggest cities had the releases...until they were also in the rural areas, it was already the 90s
Lovely band and so many other acts from this great Flying Nun period!
true that! God bless the Clean, The Verlaines, Straightjacket Fits, Chris Knox, JPS Experience... and many more!!
Hell yeah guys! Great kiwi band. Just gave me nostalgic goose bumps.
What a treat!
Up to the sky. What a fantastic song. I'm surprised that song has not been picked up for a main stream cover.
beautiful 🥰
unbelievable how they sound practically the exactly the same 30 years later.
So talented band
really great stuff :)
you just successfully annihilated my troll attack. nothing more to do here. big fan of the channel in any case ;)
Mes amis... génial 😊☺😍😘
yes.
Yeah man. This is a band from way back. Like the 80's. So don't diss, they are original. From the original Flying Nun days.
❤️💕❤️

Dédicace à mon professeur d'histoire qui m'a fait découvrir ce groupe énormeee !

nature
They can tour America with three chords
Brilliant - go buy 500 copies of Daddy's Highway and give them to everyone you like.
Whats the problem of using a fucking ipad?
This group is not the Bats that I know.
Garath de Kock y?

God bless the man, but I don't like him.
=/

@@geoffmisplon7651 No Geoff, different band.
Like a bad R.E.M.

No. This is what New Zealand sounds like. Not every band has an American or British voice. Paul Kean is brilliant. Check out Toy Love
this sucks - everyone jumpin on the goddam hipster hippie train
Ya I was gonna point out that the band is older than that fad, but I see someone already did that
