  • This plane is owned by the Yankee Air Museum in Michigan. It was the 14th to the last B17 manufactured by Boeing. It never saw combat action during WW2.
It ended up with the US Coast Guard after WW2.
In 1959, the airplane was sold to Ace Smelting, Inc. In November of that same year, Fairchild Aerial Survey Company purchased the aircraft and used it for aerial survey work. In 1966, the plane was sold to Aircraft Specialties, Inc. of Mesa, Arizona as an air tanker.
In 1969, the aircraft was one of five B-17s flown to Hawaii and used in the filming of the film Tora! Tora! Tora!, released in 1970.
In 1985, the airplane was among four other B-17s that were put up for sale at an auction held by Globe Air, the successor company to Aircraft Specialties and bought by the Yankee Air Museum and took over 5 years to restore to a WW2 configuration.

I flew on her a few years ago, A livelong dream of mine as my father was a B17 tail gunner during WWII

Sad to see her go from the Yankee Museum. She has been sold for 14 Million to a private collector in Sacramento where then she will go to New Zealand to be refurbished into an original camo color. Sad to see her go after 4 decades and will be missed dearly

When Yankee Lady was built, B-17s came were delivered in natural finish, the AAF had done away with camo paint.

@@alexander1485 I guess it hits harder when there's over 1000 aircraft in the sky all with the same intention to burn Berlin, Dresden & the rest of the country to the fuckin ground.
How could you call it anything else?!?
These companies STOPPED making cars for 5 years to build tanks, warplanes, trucks, machine guns, Jeeps, armour plate, helmets, beyonets, bullets, etc
Not to mention on June 6 1944 there were over 5000 ships in the water invading at the same time.
We went over there, & we kicked their ASS.
Yankee Lady B-17(G) is about a 40 minute drive from Detroit & SHE IS AIRWORTHY
She flies everywhere during the summer & one often hears her before she is seen going to and from Airshows.
If you're in the Rock City go see her at the Yankee Air Museum.
(BTW the aviation world & the automotive racing world LITERALLY DRAW FROM EACH OTHER, FROM THE SAME IDEAS & INSPIRATION)
      🙄🤦
