I'm old enough to remember 60's magazine ads for '88 Commission rifles selling for $19.95...my oldest (and favorite) rifle is my 1891 Argentine mauser. A real beauty.

Place in SG News was selling them for $20 about 10 years ago. I got parts for them all over the house.

My oldest milsurp are a Gew98 made in 1917, a Carcano carbine made in 1917 and a Winchester Model of 1917 made in 1918.
But my oldest gun is a Wnchester 1897 made in November 1897.

I have a 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle made in 1876 in 45-70. Its in good shape with a good bore. I never shot it before its just kind of neat wall hanger gun that may have been used in the wars in the old west and that to me makes it cool. My next oldest in my collection is a Mosin Nagant 1891 made in 1893 that has definitely seen better days.

You need a 71/84 mauser. Very interesting overly engineered, and you can reload for it. Dies, brass, and bullet molds are available. They don't break the budget and barrels are usually pristine. I love the tube mag and elevator.

I understand that the Vetterli bayonets were trimmed down and the excess front portions were fashioned into trench knives for close quarter combat.

Nice rifles. That part of history with its revolution in rifle and ammo technology in the late 1800's had as much of an impact on the world as the computer technology advances in the 1990's. There hasn't been much changed in military arms since then except full auto and the 5.56 cartridge IMHO.

I've got an 8mm converted 1890 Turkish Mauser. I love it, but would love it more in 7.65.
Koba49 shoots his 1870/87/15's and never has had an issue. He's done extensive testing of handloads for it and has tons of videos on it. I can't figure out what c&rsenal was doing wrong to crack theirs the way they did other than just overdoing it on powder trying to prevent squibs.

I love the old school blackpowder cartridge rifles. I lucked into a Steyr contract Mauser 1871 for a hair over $400. By far the most interesting one in my collection is the Werndl-Holub 1867/77. Such a unique flip open block assembly, and the archaic external side hammer is reminiscent of percussion cap muskets/rifles.

Old weapons were sent back to UK & whatever worked was keept and the barrels were all changed out( Leige) mine has an 1860 lock the barrel is 1870 manufacture.
Keep up the good mahi ( work)

Me: notices a new Readiness Reviews video has uploaded.
    Me thinks: "Sweet😁"
Also me: spots Gewehr 1888 rifle in thumbnail.
Me response: instantly jabs screen so hard I almost break it😆
Seriously though, awesome vid and I can't wait for your next time you to decide to drag out that old warhorse.
    Cheers😎
EDIT: BTW my oldest is a Izhevsk Mosin-Nagant ex-dragoon with a hex receiver stamped 1927 but I would be lying if I said I wouldn't love to get my hands on either a Mauser 71/84 or a Vetterli-Vetelli M1870/87 if I was to get into a (non-reproduction) black powder rifle😉

yeah, DO NOT SHOOT IT WITH FULL POWER CARTRIDGES, those things were designed to shoot lower pressure cartridges and will blow up if you shoot something like ppu, steiner, or surplus ammo

I'm sure you know it already, but your 88 stock likely needs some relief right where the cartridge guide is, the part similar to the interrupter on a mosin. When century had barreled actions for cheap, my friend picked up a few and they were all 88/05's. He got a stock on ebay but it turns out it was for an original 88. I compared it to the stock from my 88/05 and the area around the cartridge guide is the only difference.

I have 3 Model 1871 Ward Burtons. A carbine of which only 314 were made and 2 rifles of which there were just over 1000 made. These were made at the Springfield armory and saw service in the West and the Indian Wars. I also have 3 model 1873 trapdoor Springfields, 2 rifles and a carbine. I would think you should try to find a nice trapdoor for your collection?

The 1888 might be my trial run with hunters lodge I really want one of the 30-06 Mauser rifles Thay have but without a c&r it won't be easy all the ffl's around here are pretty stuck up and don't like the deal with transfers so it is just to much of a headache I think but the 88 I can just buy and I have wasted 100 on worse things . also I have a Veterli/Vitalli and a Dutch Beaumont 1870 Vitalli conversion and I also bought a spare Vitalli magazine I bought off eBay. I have never fired mine either. Othias scared me. As to your lust for a Krag, I own one, but mine is a family heirloom: Great Grandad was in the Spanish American War and his followed him home. Not a carbine, this is a full length rifle witll all the kit. I did a video about it which has a thumbnail of him made in the mid 1920s ua-cam.com/video/Sqmp3Ew0z-c/v-deo.html
