Seems like there are bigger fish to fry. This reminds me of the doping scandal with Lance Armstrong... the funniest part is that staging the crash wasn’t even illegal, he could’ve set up a film crew and gotten experts involved (if he can afford to crash a plane he can afford to hire a couple people) but he was stupid and doubled down so hard that he lied to the government
Nah he didn't have the money to fake it legit. That plane cost him next to nothing. It was a used plane that he bought specifically for this venture and it did not cost him a lot. Planes can be surprisingly inexpensive. This 1940 Taylor craft has prices as low as 4k and averages around 15k in good condition. This one wasn't good condition. I would say he paid 7-8k for the plane at most.

none of those are really substantial concerns; but aviation fuel leaking could be a huge environmental problem for the crash site

Too all aviation pilots are suppose to safely land the plane the best you can do in any dead engine situation, even if you have a parachute. Intentionally crashing a plane no matter where it still a crime, because you can potential hit someone no matter how desolate.

Some people will do a lot of stupid things if they think it will bring them money (supposedly he had a sponsorship deal arranged as part of this plan).
My favorite part of the outcry from pilots was when Scooby1961 (usually a fitness youtuber) took a similar type of plane to around the same area and altitude and went through all the other possibilities the guy could have done other than bailing out, and showed that he could have even just glided back to a nearby airstrip by shutting his engine off and doing just that.

I’ve watched so many plane disaster/crash videos and as soon as you mentioned hiding the wreckage from the NTSB everything else became irrelevant by comparison and the 20 year sentence made sense. totally inexcusable given the lengths they go through to find evidence in real crashes. to lie to them when they are one of probably the most important regulatory and investigative bodies on the planet is insane to me
I don't understand why he didn't do what Photogrammarly guy said and faked the plane cutting out and then land on that open space? It would've looked so much cooler to be able to properly handle the emergency, he gets to keep his plane, and there's no risk of imprisonment.
Pilot here. Even that would’ve gotten him in trouble because he’d still have to notify the NTSB, who would still look at the diagnostics and discover no actual problem. Lying to the FAA/NTSB is a brain-dead idea in any context, but especially when it comes to aircraft in flight.

For those who are new to this, the sponsor of the plane crash video is ridge wallet. When the video was uploaded, there is a sponsorship segment in the video but at some point they asked Trevor to remove the sponsorship segment from the video. He did this so he can fulfill the sponsorship deal.
This man deliberately crashed a plane and potentially faces 20 years in prison to simp for ridge wallet.

@@hexflash6283Could’ve been hikers that got hit, could’ve been animals that got hit, could’ve started a forest fire, there’s a plethora of things that could have been affected by this crime, not to mention he probably destroyed multiple animals homes with the crash and destroyed a forest that’s most likely protected and you aren’t allowed to destroy anything in it.
I actually remember getting recommended his tribute video about his friend's passing. Very tragic stuff. But it feels kind of weird looking back knowing he used the same friend as an excuse for this stunt.
If I remember correctly, in the original video, he talked about his friend, displayed what looked like his ashes in a ziplock bag, and immediately transitioned into an add for Ridge Wallet. It was jarring that Ridge Wallet almost immediately had the segment cut so they wouldn’t be associated with the video.
Was funny seeing all this unfold. Anyone with a modicum of common sense knew immediately he did it on purpose. Seeing youtubers tear apart every aspect proving he chose to ditch the aircraft for views was great, especially when he was stupid enough to make it so obvious. It was really never a question whether he crashed it on purpose though.

I mean, I first became aware of it when recommended videos started popping up made by pilots breaking down how he obviously faked it. I've never watched his video in full, just people pointing out that it was obviously faked. So yeah, was pretty obvious to me lol, other people did all the hard work.

The funny thing is, he almost certainly could have done (faked) it in a totally legal manner. It would probably take a few weeks/months and a b of paperwork, but if he told the FAA that he was going to stage an airplane crash as a display, and he got the local government to shut down the intended crash zone for a couple days to ensure nobody was anywhere nearby, yeah, with some work he probably could have legally gotten permission to crash his airplane in the exact manner he did. Honestly, if he did everything the same, but just didn’t lie to the FAA and federal investigators, he probably would have only gotten a 10-30k fine at worst, maybe a couple of months. He was so dumb about the way he handled it.

More to the story: he bought that aircraft with the intention of crashing it. Or at least his videos leading up to his "grand finale" lead you to believe. He knew it had major issues, laughed them off. Did the bare minimum to get it in the air, and crashed it after only a couple of flights. Also, that particular plane glides quite well, excellent wing design. The piper Cub was partially based on it. No chance he couldn't have brought it down safely.
I can't comprehend the thought process behind this...

Nah, 20 years is meant for SERIOUS obstructions, IE RICO cases or murder cases, etc. I expect/hope 5-10 years, depending on how extensive his lies were, etc. I really expect 2 years and a lot of fines, etc.

That said, no sometimes people need to be slammed with the maximum, especially if you're going to lie about, take interviews and continue to lie about it, and hinder the investigation and destroy evidence. These are all conscious decisions he made, he deserves the maximum penalty.
@@deathwrow9652 No. There could have been people hiking that day, who could have been killed by the plane. He recorded the video and it went viral. This was purposefully done to gain attraction and so the fact that he potentially put other peoples lives in danger and glorified it justifies a harsher sentence.
You should have shown some of the analysis. Like having his door open before the engine shut off, and that when he jumps out you can see a fire extinguisher strapped to his leg hidden under his pants

It was suspicious like instantly from the fact that you don't just instantly jump out of a plane when the engine stops. That is a light plane that can quite easily glide for miles.
Even if that guy tries to write off this incredibly dangerous stunt as a "stupid mistake" he's going to have to deal with the fact he showed massive criminal energy by getting rid of the wreckage to hide the evidence from the authorities and lying about it. That's a major argument for leaning toward a higher or even the maximum sentence, imo.
my favorite part is that if he still pulled the malfunction stunt, like it was mentioned - he could have just landed safely and clickbaited hard an almost crash, still getting a lot of views without that much suspicion and legal action!!

He was so far up when he jumped. Unless your wings have fallen off or the cockpit is on fire I can't think of a reason to bail out that early.

I had watched Trevor for a couple of years before the plane incident. I knew he wasn't the smartest with all his brain injuries but when I saw him release the plane crash video. My heart sank. I'm not a pilot but I know some basics about planes thanks to my dad being a pilot. It was clear as day it was faked/intentional. Since I had watched him for some time I knew that plane wasn't his normal one and he never showed it in a video before, he never flew with a parachute on, no mayday call or call after he landed that park has cell service, the multiple camera angles, which wasn't too weird but it was how many angles there were and the selfie stick. You could see clear spots to land, and the whole video felt off from the start. However it has been edited since the original release. He removed the sponsorship part at the start of the video. As people attacked the sponsor (ridge wallet) for sponsoring Trevor which was uncalled for. But I became toxic towards Trevor after the video. It sucked seeing someone you enjoyed become this arrogant clown who just refused to be honest. Then he made shirts and stuff mocking people for calling him out, the guy is just a garbage human. But his brain injuries are partially to blame.
Anyways super glad he is getting charged. I hope he gets the max sentence and has to serve those 20 years.
But watching the internet to detective work on the incident was entertaining. People found flight logs showing where he picked up the crashed plane and flew it out to sea, the fire extinguisher strapped to himls leg under his pants, etc... It was entertaining.

Ludwig, I think it's really important that you distinguish between someone pleading guilty to something, and actually admitting that they did it. Please look into the ridiculous rates of pleading guilty and learn about how many innocent people are coerced into taking a plea deal in order to avoid a possible really long sentence. this case may certainly be one where he did it, and is genuinely admitting to it, but it's nonetheless an important distinction to make.
But you need to admit doing something in order to plead guilty. They won't let you plead guilty unless you confess, right?

All my flight sim hours are in Minecraft hardcore so you KNOW I've got it like that
I was a student pilot with about 150hr. If you lose the engine pitch for best glide speed and and look for a place to land. If you have time make an emergency call.
In a situation like that you are supposed to squawk "7700" on your transponder and attempt to restart the engine. If the engine still doesnt restart then you talk to ATC and get instructions on how to restart it and stuff. Basically you have a VERY low chance of crashing. He didnt squawk 7700, he didnt talk to ATC, he didnt even try to restart the engine. What other pilot flies with a parachute? What other pilot wears a body camera and has multiple cameras mounted on their plane? He deserves everything that is coming to him. What a dope.
