054 - V-22 Osprey

  • When it comes to military aircraft, most enthusiasts are familiar with the subcategories airplanes and helicopters, and the differing ways they generate lift. The former propels one or more stationary wings through the airstream and thus requires a relatively high minimum flying speed. The latter rotates multiple overhead wings, which facilitates flight in a stationary hover but typically at the expense of a relatively slow top speed.
A less-well known third category combines the best features of airplanes and helicopters into one highly effective platform. Powered Lift air vehicles feature short or vertical takeoffs and landings as well as high top speeds-offering a tremendous advantage in military operations. The powered lift category features only three aircraft: the AV-8B Harrier, the ‘B’ variant of the F-35 Lightning II, and the subject of this week’s show: the V-22 Osprey.
On this episode, US Marine Corps Reserve Major Josh “Sweet Pea” Smith joins us to discuss the Osprey in depth: from its tumultuous development, to the variants flown by three of the four US military branches, to its weapons systems, and more. Sweet Pea further describes what it’s like to pilot an Osprey-whether loaded with Marines or in the service of our country’s top governmental leadership.
During the listener question segment, Jell-O and Sunshine discuss supersonic flight restrictions, carrier obsolescence, ordnance selection for uncertain mission tasking, and whether Cold War and older aircraft will be featured on coming episodes.

Just stumbled across this podcast and absolutely love it! I am a CV-22 Crew Chief and had a small correction, the blade fold wing stow is both electronically and hydraulically actuated as the pylon conversion actuators and the capstan drive assembly are hydraulic through hydraulic system 3 but the blade fold motors are electronic.

(INSERT EXPLETIVE) Paramount, who are they to tell anyone not to give their opinion on a released movie trailer? Any normal person understands artistic license and that movies are not real.

As always a great podcast, I love that MV-22 osprey. I did first see it in Transformers and then I used to play a sandbox military game called Arma 2 had it in there too and It was fun to swing the rotors/Nacelles up and then down and you did have to take off with them ar around 30-60% so not as accurate as how DCS would do it but close enough and it was fun. Very cool guy you had on. Thanks for the interview guys as always.

Another fantastic one Jell-O, sunshine and team . The v22 ospery is breath taking to see and the sound when they fly low over you is awesome. I live in northyorkshier in the UK and there guys use Cattrick garrison most of the time. fantastic to watch . I did hear that the traditional helcopters as we know them are going to be replaced by tiltrotor platforms .

Interesting, as a Marine Officer Candidate in Quantico, VA in July 1992, I watched one crash into the Chesapeake about 150m in front of me while I was waiting for our platoon to form up after chow. It was so close that I was splashed by water from the crash. Later, I found out 19 people were killed in the mishap. I swore at the time that as a Marine, I would never ride a V-22 Osprey. The image will forever be etched in my mind, God Bless their souls.

Great episode gents! Our MWSS was on deck for the first combat deployment of the Ospreys to Iraq back in 07. It was pretty awesome to see those men and women cruising around the flight line. They were able to give morale flights between ops to some of the units of the base. Man the transition from hover to full forward flight was awesome! With the Osprey able to keep a level deck thoughout the transition it felt like we were going to slide out the back! Lol

So, can this thing fly on one engine? I listened to this podcast a while back, but can't remember... I guess he said, if in helicopter mode, it would immediately crash, and in airplane mode you would need a runway. Can it fly/glide if it lost ALL engine power? Like a helicopter can auto-rotate, and a plane can glide. This after yet another crash that took four lives. March 19, 2022

I agree with the caller, the carrier as we know it, is almost obsolete. With the advent of so many missiles and the up and coming era of drones, aircraft carriers have about a decade left. All the carriers that are in the pipeline will not be built. And if you are wondering about my credentials, I have my doctorate from the university of UA-cam.

@** after following the program for a while, I believe that the brass were concerned about the number of soldiers risked. Also, the V-280 and Defiant X are being developed to replace the Blackhawk, so I believe that the Army wants to keep the transport organization around 12 troops. The Chinook can transport larger vehicles and artillery, so I believe that the lifting capacity dissuaded the acquisition of Ospreys for the Army.
