060 - MiG-29 Fulcrum

- Arms races have existed as long as humans have been warring and the Cold War was no exception. In the late 1970’s the U.S. fielded the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F/A-18 Hornet air superiority fighters. The Soviet Union, meanwhile, fielded its own advanced fighter that was in many ways superior. With amazing agility, a high thrust-to-weight ratio, and a helmet-mounted sight with associated high off-boresight weapon, the MiG-29 Fulcrum was a credible opponent to the West.
On this episode, retired Indian Air Force Air Marshal Harish “Fulcrum 1” Masand phones in from Central India to describe the MiG-29 and his key role inducting the Fulcrum into the IAF. He describes the variants, weapons, and how it was so easy to fly that he was able to put on aerial demonstrations with only 20 hours of experience in the Fulcrum.

Guest co-host Darin “Wang” Chung from episode 26 joins us after the interview to describe his experiences training against Malaysian MiG-29s during one of his Marine Corps F/A-18D Hornet unit deployments. There is no listener question segment in this episode.

Gosh, I love how humble military pilots are and how they just enjoy telling stories and sharing their experience.
Something that some commercial pilots should learn to do.
The Air Marshal was a good sport. 👍
@@FighterPilotPodcast , he always is a good sport. Great man! Lot of respects and love for him.
Amazing, really interesring to hear from non-American pilots
🙏
Would love to hear more from Air Marshal Masand. It sounds like he's got several episodes of The Fighter Pilot Podcast in him. Would really like to hear about his time on the Hawker Hunter. It sounded like he had a lot of fun flying that thing. Great episode.
We'll see if we can get him back.
@Rajnish Sharma Thank you, Rajnish.
@@FighterPilotPodcast sir, please try do an episode on the Hunters and Gnats. The last gun slinging fighters. It's as good as F86 for us❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@finixhawkeye3213 If we have not yet covered a military aircraft--it's fair game.
@@FighterPilotPodcast 2 years afterwards: please do!!
very cool being able to hear from other fighter pilots from different countries flying different birds!
We're trying to mix it up. 😎
I screamed internally when I saw this show up in my feed. It's great to see one of my favorite aircraft get a spot in the limelight.
I really hope you get to more Russian jets, especially interviews about training to fight against them. It's thrilling to hear about.
Thanks. If we can find suitable guests we certainly will.
DokturProfesur Is it any match for America formidable F16
For a Moment i thought he maybe had one of the german guys that flew them after those of the DDR went to the west german Luftwaffe. But even better hearing from another source/perspective
@@Baerinho I was expecting the same dude.
@@Baerinho most of those interviews were boring… nothing to compare to this one here
Interesting to see that the Air Marshal seems to be a follower of Hartmann when it comes to engagement ranges.😉
Indeed.
i love how the air marshal talks, so on point, just an amazing gentleman, great episode.
I like this guy's voice.
WOW!!!
Fantastic interview!!!
Have followed the 29 since the late 80's, really great to hear what a mission pilot thought of the a/c. Thank you!!!
You're welcome, Brian--glad you enjoyed it.
@@FighterPilotPodcast I wonder if you'd be interested in listening to this gentleman, Mr Bruce Gordon, ua-cam.com/video/XxEakcZa6gw/v-deo.html . He flew F106's and this video is but a glimpse at this man's vast knowledge. Would love to hear you do a throw back episode with this wonderful patriot :-) We're losing these folks way to quickly and I'm so thankful that he and you are preserving your tales for history!!! Thank you for all you do sir!!!
@@n7565j Wow Sir!! Vincent listened to you and see he is now the guest in the f106!!!! cool!!!
I am looking forward for an episode on flankers especially Su30Mki it's really amazing to hear the honest stories of the pilots. Love these podcasts looking forward for more.
Damn another amazing one!! The air m
Marshal was a pleasure to listen to, really well spoken gentleman. Love your work guys! Keeping my fingers crossed for an F117 or F15 episode!
Thanks, Giacomo. We are working on the Eagle; don't have anyone lined up for the stink bug as of yet...
GREAT episode, well done as usual FPP. Mig29 has been my favorite fighter since I saw it in the late 80s/early 90s at the Abbotsford intl air show, the first time the Russians/Soviets came to a Western airshow with the Mig29. A Canadian pilot my family knew got to fly their B model that weekend, and after he went on and on about it the next time we had dinner together, I was a young teenager smitten with the Mig29. Built so many models, flew every flight sim with the Mig29 (the early Falcon 3.0 had a Mig29 upgrade come out shortly after this - thank you Gilman Louie). Anyhow, great interview, I went and searched out the article Massand mentioned, it's fantastic too. Both guests were great, Wang was great too.
Thanks very much. 🙏
Wow,Mr.Hasand sounds rather pleasant and humble,a real nice fellow,if you ask me.
And I never thought I'd hear about Russian birds on the podcast!
And the MiG-29 is one of those birds you don't hear alot about nowadays.
Well Done!
🙏
Please interview more retired pilots from the IAF! SpeCially mig 21 would be amazing
One of the most beautiful fighter aircraft, I think
At least from a distance, so it sounded.
@@FighterPilotPodcast
I envy you ;) I was too young to remember the MiG-29s in my country's (Germany's) service. I do, remember, however, Phantoms flying above the Hohenzollern castle...
I like to add the thumbnail / background image is pure art!
Fighter Pilot Podcast is an awesome resource , never mind entertaining . Great credit to them. I reckion I know much more now than I ever did back when I was flying in the military - about various platforms. I only just discovered the site. As an example, regarding the Fulcrum, we - at squadron level - knew only the basics of the aircraft. I the hands of the Indian Air Force, a more potent threat given their non Soviet operating philosophy.
Yes, I've been waiting for one like this for a while. Glad you could make this happen!
Man, one of the best episodes ever, keep up the good work 🤙
Thanks for the interview!!
Oh boy am i excited for this one Vin, keep up the great work!!!!!
This was fantastic episode and the Air Marshal was a real treat to listen to, keep up the amazing work guys!
🙏
Amazing interview. Thanks!!
Thank you Air Marshal.....You hit the right spot on the MiG-29 for its ruggedness.
Amazing interview, didnt know a thing about the MiG 29 other than it looked amazing. My second favorite looking fighter behind the F-16!
Obviously next one should be flankers :)
Don't have a guest lined up for that one yet...😔
@@FighterPilotPodcast May be you can ask Harish to refer someone, there is a lot of su 30s in IAF, Thank you for all thease podcasts.
@@JithinJose2 You're welcome.
Pretty please. One on flankers will be a hit.
@@manikrn007 Eventually!
as a Malaysian, hearing Major Wang's story is very nice. He is very lucky! Sad that our Fulcrums are gathering dust now...
All good things must come to an end, they say.
Love listening to these guys who get to fly what most of us 172 guys can only dream about. Keep em coming !
Will do!
Cool interview, appreciated listening to the different prospective.
brilliant programme
Thank you, Bill. 🙏
Great episode. I love how he not only talks about the aircraft but also about other aspects of being a fighter pilot.
Was so excited to see this aircraft pop up!
Hope it delivers!
LMAO when he mentions the experiments with A/A armament and seekers on the F-35, are you holding your tongue and wondering how he found out about classified info? Or was that nervous laugh about something else, Jello? :D
He probably knows more about the Lightning II than I do!
Just imagine the scene: an older looking gentlemen jumping in Mig29 and casually pulling off Cobra maneuver.
Respect, and thank you for an amazing insight with those interviews.
Greetings from Poland (not a fun of Russia yet admirer of their military aircraft philosophy and development)
✌
Waiting for more episodes like this
You guys should ask Harish if he has any buddies currently in the IAF or recently retired that want to be on the show, I'd love to hear a little more about the newer Mig-29K and Mig-29UPG or about Tejas.
That was amazing, thanks! Would be great to have a Mig-21 episode some day!
Hold that thought about another... oh, four episodes or so (from where we are today, not episode 60).
Lovely that was Epic, Dis Air-Marshal was Absolutely Slick, also Warm & Down to Earth ...
Agreed, except when he was flying!
& that what u call a real content.....apart from so much expert youtube channels..great work bro..& so much thanks..
Great Podcast. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. We're trying!
WHOOOO MiG-29! I guess next is Su-27/30/33/34/35? can't wait! There's some things I'd like to mention about things that haven't got mentioned in this episode:
>MiG-29 and Su-27 family shaped like so to exploit the result of Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute's research in blended wing-body design to increase lift without severely increasing drag. The leading edge vortex generators would create vortex at high angles of attack that would bleed off right next the two vertical tail area, which allows the plane to control it's yaw even at high angles of attack(like the F/A-18 series, and one of the reasons why F-16 have angle of attack limitations). This is why the Su-27 and MiG-29 looks very similar. However, MiG-29 proves to be the "inferior" among the two designs after production for it's lack of internal volume: Soviet avionics aren't really as small or as light as their western counterparts. Su-27 aren't really affected because of it's large size, but for MiG-29 this means less internal fuel space, not to mention 2 engines burn fuel faster than one. This become MiG-29's major design "flaw" that still affect it even until MiG-35 to some degree.
>while MiG-29 is designed with blended wing-body design that effectively increased it's lift area and have relaxed stability, it doesn't originally come with Fly-By-Wire unlike F-16 and F/A-18 or even it's larger counterpart, the Su-27. Later variants eventually included FBW.
>MiG-35 while looks similar to MiG-29, is actually slightly larger than it. Kinda like the F/A-18A/B/C/D vs F/A-18E/F. It also lacks the FOD door(said to be unnecessary), and doesn't have different model from single seater to two seater. The single seater would have the space behind it filled by a fuel tank that can be removed to place the second seat and make it a two seater.
>While MiG-29OVT have thrust vectoring, currently no production Fulcrum has it. MiG-35 is said to offer it as option but there's no confirmation yet
Well done Jello great interview..
Thank you, Sean.
You have GOT to get this guy back to tell his stories about combat! The little we got was too interesting.
Some additional information:
Except the revolutionary IRST system and HMS, the MiG-29 had/has another cool feature. If the pilot ever found himself with his bearings lost, upside down, in a dive, confused... there is a switch on the stick, which, when pressed by the pilot, it would turn over the aircraft the right side up and level it out.
The MiG-29A (the original) can only carry 2 medium range R-27(E)R/T on the inner stations. The other 4 stations can only carry R-60/73. The updated MiG-29S (Fulcrum-C) had a new radar which allowed for the use of R-77s, which could be mounted on all stations. The radar had the ability to TWS 2 targets at the same time. The electronics also featured an inboard ECM system (as Jell-O said)
The MiG29A also has an interesting russian radio beacon navigation system, carried over from the MiG-21
Oh and I think we can all agree that Enzo overselled the Eurofighter a bit :-D
@Kaizaro123 Fly-by-wire only means that the controls of the pilot are not directly connected to the flight surfaces, but to a computer which then directs them. There is a flight control system in the MiG and it does have dampers as many other aircraft also do, both military and civil (B737, F-15, ect.... both are not fly-by-wire).
The button in question is actually a Autopilot Level Flight button, just another function of the autopilot. The MiG-29 has an Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) which takes care of this. Gyros play a big part in aircraft ! Hopefully this has helped out a bit, for further information try searching trough Google for the MiG-29 AFCS and also how autopilots work in general. Cheers!
I can try and look up some documentation if you are interested
Lovely! What he said about thrust vectoring is quite eye opening.
@@lepepelepub12 around minute 45(44:30 to be exact)When he speaks about the weaknesses of the fulcrum

So cool you guys changed the radio commands to Russian on the intro! So much attention to detail.

Great interview.. enjoyed every bit of it.. would have been great if the Air Marshal would have dwelled a bit more on the MiG's armament and their abilities.. nevertheless great listen..
Thanks.
YES! What an episode, more red planes please!
Working on it...
Impressive! It is always so interesting to listen and observe the very different aviators approach to the machines and flying them . Especially from the Far East and Middle East!
Indeed. The Air Marshall was great.
I love that air marshal he was so on point and your interviewing was fine but a little tense at times ide say
Real American thanks for the feedback, and for listening!
I actually like flying the mig29 in dcs. It has some great handling characteristics!
As always this was great and I love you guys could get the Mig-29 on and the Air Marshal seemed very capable. Would you do this again with a Russian pilot if you could or on any further Russian jets at all?
Sure, we're always on the lookout for guests and content.
MIG 29 is also very underrated in India too,. SU30 MKI,MIRAGE and RAFALE gets all the fandom.
Thanks for inviting Indian pilot to podcast
Waiting for more
Check out our MiG-21 episode.
FINALLLYYY!!!!!!!
How did no one mention that the MiG-29 was is "Goldeneye" for a few minutes? Also in "Air Force One". Good episode.
YES
It sounds like it will be nice !
Great episode Jello! Any chance we can get an episode on the Su-25?
If I can find a suitable guest, sure.
Why did I just find this now!! WOW :)
Welcome!
MIG 35 replaced the FOD doors for FOD screens like those on the Flanker family.
It has 4 Underwing stations on each wing.
The new Rd33mk engines don't smoke and improved maintanence time.
It now a 4++ multi-role jet
The malaysian Hawk with the radar is the Hawk 208(its Hawk 200 with air refueling probe),equipped with AN/APG-66 radar.
Absolutely great interview. And I concur as an airplane buff having had long conversations with pilots and crews: one could talk for hours and hours about these things and never be finished. Great stuff!
It's an ongoing challenge for us, Bjørnar, glad to know we're not alone!
Jai Hind
Mid 1990s: me unboxing my new copy of the MiG-29 addon for Falcon 3.0. Those were great days.
Certainly simpler times then these days.
Jello, what are the chances in getting a chat with Dozer about some F-15C action? He also has some war nice war stories from ODS and Boznia.
We're still on the lookout for an Eagle guy, so possibly.
Please get this man on about the su30mki, i gotta hear about that thrust vectoring
Love from malaysia. We just retired mig29n from our air force . Bon voyage fulcrum . 💓
In Egypt we have the F-16, Mirage 2000 and Rafael.
I was surprised when we bought the MIG-35 And was surprised more when I heard one year later they want to buy the SU-35s, what kind of experience did they have.
Imagine the dogfight between the f-16 blc50, Rafael and MIG-35 😂
I'd like to be a part of that skirmish!
@@FighterPilotPodcast just to note that the Egyptian air force usually trains with other golf states fighters like Kuwait F-18 Or Saudi typhoon and F-15s.
well actually as I know, egyptian air forse has Mig-29m2 not Mig-35. First Mig-35's ,were started in produce only this year. I don't know how many differences between this models. Maybe Mig-29M2 is based on Mig-29K. Mig-35 should have a new radar.
LOL you Egyptians are buying everything, just like India, which has su30, mig29, mirage 2000, rafale, and now Tejas. That's the problem with countries like ours, which don't design and produce most of their own weapons. Logistics and maintenance is a nightmare.
@@manassurya2019 did you hear that we bought 24 Eurofighter Typhoon + 24 su-35.

Enjoyable
Wow, great insights, Any plans on Mig-25?
If it's a military aircraft we have not yet covered, it's fair game.
Know any Foxbat pilots?
My cousin is also IAF fighter ace & Indian TOPGUN Co.
Is it fair to conclude (with two equally skilled pilots) the Mig-29 Fulcrum has the advantage in a two circle fight?
What's the other pilot flying in this scenario?
Wow, shot him at 50 yards...18 rounds were one too many.. I dont know if it can get more badass than this!

The French MICA is equivalent to the R27 as it comes in 2 versions : EM and IR. The IR version has a range close to that of an Aim-120B. It's also the first western missile that was equiped with thrust vectoring.

In terms of movies, the 29 was featured in Air Force One.
I think the biggest exposure the west had of the Mig 29 was the game Fulcrum.

@@FighterPilotPodcast mainly their aircraft's sir, the differences between fheir J and the C Eagle, especially the F-2s, and the Phantoms, which although unfortunately, also understandably to be retired.
And how is it to fly with the ASDF, how ere they operates, their trainings and procedural stuffs
@@divecolosio4988 Sounds like a good future episode...
In Soviet service, the MiG-29B would have operated close to the battlefield and provided air defence and counter air against enemy air combat fighters as well as attack NATO strike fighters and providing top cover for Soviet ground troops and tanks plus it works in conjunction with mobile SAM systems such as the TOR missiles.
The MiG-29 would operate in normal operations at the air base but looking at the distance between the air base and frontline, it would too time consuming plus it would affect the jet's radius and time on station. The MiG-29 would operate in dispersed sites near to the battlefield which helped reduce time to action as well as giving more time to protect ground troops while protecting Soviet attack jets. The Su-27 would provide top cover and also assist long range bombers to achieve its strategic missions. In Soviet missions, the MiG-29 would have operated in large numbers. It would require low maintenance thanks to its rugged design.
Does tail slide or standing cobra has any combat advantages or they just show off?
It's an airshow trick that demonstrates an aircraft's overall maneuverability, which can be beneficial in combat in other ways--if not exactly the way it's depicted.
